MPH / MSPH 2021: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected, Attending

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Did anyone hear from Columbia financial aid today? I was accepted 1/20 and I am anxiously waiting.
I also was accepted 1/20 and haven't heard anything about aid. However, I did have a brief meeting with Admissions today and asked them when I might hear and they said hopefully in the next few weeks (not suuuuper helpful, but at least a little bit of a timeline).

Per @Sunshine2021's advice, I emailed Mary Keefe from Yale about my application. After Columbia reached out about awaiting a GRE score this morning, I figured something similar may have happened with my other schools. I think admissions received so many emails that my GRE update may have been lost in an inbox, which is totally understandable!

It turned out my application was marked complete, but was not under review because they were waiting for a GRE score. She said it will not adversely impact the review of my application. I've been moved to the review pile and should have a decision from Yale in 7-10 days!

Just a heads up for anyone else who submitted their apps saying they were expecting a GRE score, but ended up not submitting one!

GWU health policy folks: did you guys get accepted without an interview? Someone just reached out to me to get to know me (10 min convo)...wondering if this is a make or break conversation, like if they're on the fence about rejecting me
I did not have one but they probably just want to get to know you better. I wouldn't stress too much. Read some prep for how to answer grad school interview questions and you'll be fine! Tbh I kind of wish I interviewed for some of the programs so I could get a better vibe and ask some questions.

@Anya230

If you are appealing for a merit-based funding, it usually and most often does not include COA into consideration, and they will not ask you. Always argue on the merit of what you bring to the table, and the fact that JHU and BU have offered you so much, but you would like to absolutely be part of the Emory community. Most likely they will ask you for some proof of the scholarship from JHU/BU (I've seen that happen in b-school), rather than taking your word.

Ask for the stars and they might give you the moon.
Thank you for the advice! I was really nervous to ask because I didnt want to feel so greedy but that is really helpful.
I'll probably email them at the end of the month when I feel a little more confident lol.

okay stating the obvious- NYC living is VERY pricey. I can't seem to find information on how much student housing costs for the studio/apartment options at Columbia. Anyone have any input on this? With Covid there may be a chance that other apartments may actual be a better option. Would love any and all input!

I think Mailman students are included in the med school housing which has separate options and rates from the general grad housing at Columbia. There's some info with average rates at this link! Rates and Billing

Also, my partner is a law student at Columbia and lives in the grad student housing and pays ~ $1180 for a single room in a 2 bed apartment, which I think is a lot cheaper than most off-campus apartments would be, if that's any help!

Did anyone apply to Upenn? I have an interview coming up and want to know if this is normal! Also, how did it go & what was the style of the interview?
Most of us had to interview! For me, it was a conversation with two interviewers that lasted less than 30 minutes. I came away from it with mixed feelings even though it was fairly casual, but I ended up getting accepted!

Hey, I am glad it worked out for you.

Very glad that you acted in time before it would be too late. You are in good hands now.

I wish you the best of luck.

Living in NYC right now. Rent prices are RIDICULOUSLY cheap in the city right now. If you live near Columbia very feasible to pay ~$1000 or less for a room as long as you're willing to have roommates. Check Streeteasy for a good idea of the prices.

Thank you so much! Any advice going into it?

What identifying info did you include in the email? I applied in November and will write my email as well.

The biggest advice I can give is to work in school. I already emailed NYU about jobs on campus. They said graduate students make $20 starting and can work up to 20 hours a week when in school. That can go up to 35 hours when on break or so. I plan on applying to Army scholarships and working during grad school.

My budget is $1200 which is considered cheap in NYC. But with roommates its possible to find a place for that much or even lower.

Go on FB and look up Columbia Sublets. Thats how students find their off campus housing as cheap as possible.

I already joined the NYU sublet group.

you can also get some side hustles. I also plan on becoming a dog walker while in grad school to make some extra money LOL

I never received an email from Brown with portal login information. Anyone else in the same situation?
I didn’t either. My guess is they’ll have you make one when your decision is ready. Drexel did that and it was very nerve wracking because it was my first decision. Making an account while you know there is a decision waiting for you is crazy.

Hi! Did you apply to the MPH program? From their website, I only saw an Epidemiology concentration, not Epi/Biostat!
My bad I forget which programs had combined and which were just one or the other! Also can't even remember is SOPHAS has you specify or not, but if it did I picked epi 🙂

You are in a good situation because you already committed to a school. Many of us, myself included, have not committed to any school yet. Therefore, there is no way we can do any planning now. It is good to be you because you are all set 😁

Omg Brown is releasing decisions now? My application wasn’t verified until 12/16, so mine prob won’t be released today but omg

$1200 would get you a pretty nice place so I wouldn't worry. I'm seeing studios going for $1500 these days. I currently live in Harlem and pay $1300 and have two extra bedrooms and a private terrace, will have another person move in next year and end up paying $900 a month for a semi-luxury building.

It's even possible to live further downtown in nicer areas at that price point right now.

Thats good to hear. My biggest concern is that I want to live reasonably close to campus. I heard a lot of students live off campus in the surrounding boroughs like brooklyn. I want to live near Washington Square and be able to afford it LOL.

Ah I misread thought you were going to Columbia! It can still be possible -- I would look at Kips Bay/Grammercy. Midtown is also super cheap now but has no personality. And re: Brooklyn, everywhere but Williamsburg should be pretty reasonable.

Folks, for peeps who live in the USA, dont forget to submit your FAFSA.

Okay, how does FAFSA work for grad school? Both my brother and I went to state schools and he didn't get any aid when he went, so my parent's didn't even bother filling out FAFSA for me.

So are the rules different for grad school? My parent's will not claim me for 2021, do I complete FAFSA as an independent? Will my parent's income affect any aid for me?

I plan to go to a public state school for MPH.

Still fill out a FAFSA as this will allow you to get federal loans (I believe). Federal loans are much preferable than private loans imo.

Your parents' income may affect you as FAFSA is based off of the previous year's taxes.

If your parents dont claim you, you can file as an independent, although each program might be a little different. I suggest you to contact financial aid office at the program of your interest to get the best answer for that program.

Some programs specify an age that you can claim yourself as an independent when a CSS profile is needed for a thorough assessment of your situation at that program. As such, only the financial aid office at your programs can give you the best answer for your situation.

I filled out my FAFSA in November, but just checked it out to be sure. It asked me about my age and what type of degree I was going for. It also asked about if I have any dependents. Based on only that info, I was deemed an "independent" by FAFSA. As a current undergrad, it gave me an EFC of 0. I wasn't even asked about if I was claimed on my parents' taxes or if I claimed myself. Then, I was given the option to enter parental information with the note that it wouldn't impact my EFC. I did so, because I remember it being required for Columbia.

Folks, for domestic applicants, you should fill out and submit the FAFSA asap. Many programs have need-based scholarships. They need the info from your fafsa to determine this. Plus, if you want work-study, you must fill out the FAFSA. You should submit your fafsa asap, as all aids are first come first served.

I just want you all to be in the best financial situation for grad school.

Hello everyone. I need some advice. I applied to several MPH epidemiology programs. So far got accepted to NYU (18k scholarship over 2 years), U of South Florida online, U of Arizona online , Mount Sinai, and Temple. Still waiting on decision from Columbia, Texas A&M online, and U of Texas/Houston online, and U of Alabama-Birmingham online, and SUNY downstate. I am leaning towards USF online Epi so far because it seems like a great deal (23k total tuition for 2 year program and it is ranked number 16 among public health schools). I want to work as an Epidemiologist in NYC but am just worried about employment. Do employers in nyc have preference in taking people from certain schools? Would a big name or high ranked school open more doors or would it not really matter for a entry level Epidemiologist? Would appreciate your honest opinion!! Thanks!

People say school doesnt matter, but all my coworkers with MPH are from the local state university or from my alma mater. Idk if that means people just stay in my city or the local positions favor local graduates.
