MSU-COM Discussion Thread 2011-2012

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
The school won't give you a loan and if you are not a green card holder than you will be ineligible for US loans. There are some US loans you are eligible for with a US cosigner. Also, Canadian banks offer between 150 -200k lines of credit. I'll be using one of those along with money I saved up from working.

Yea I was thinking of using a line of credit (200K) along with the Studentaid BC loans from the government, which is another 10-15k per year. That should hopefully cover it.

I'm not from MI; how's the weather generally like in EL or MI? can you talk each season? also are there any ski resorts in EL or MI in general?

I gotta take you to Boyne Highlands! There will be snow on the ground December thru March/April.

UBCVAN,

It is going to be coooold for us from Victoria/Vancouver. Maybe we should wear the Spartan costume when we are there. LOL

Boyne Highlands seems to be way up north. Nothing close to any of the campuses?

Michigan weather can be ridiculous---there have been days where it will be sunny then rain then hail then snow--sometimes, you never really know 🙂

In general though, (or at least in my opinion) spring, summer and fall are beautiful. Spring is usually sunny, some rain, in the 60s+. Summer can get somewhat humid and peaks in the 90s around July (typically). Fall is kind of a mixed bag--we'll get some chillier days and then some gorgeous days like we've had this week (mid-high 70's and lots of sun). By now though, after sunset it's pretty chilly.

Winter is gorgeous here too, as long as you're indoors (I hate the cold). Usually it starts snowing in November and it can be pretty cold through March. Michigan is one of those places where you really need to have clothing appropriate for any kind of weather because it can be so variable. You can literally go from wearing shorts one week to needing a winter jacket the next.

thanks for the thorough response 👍

From where I used to live, it was considered south! Lol I'm sure there are closer places, but I'm not familiar with EL. Probably a 2.5 -3 hour drive to Boyne.

I will add, specifically East Lansing is one of the cloudiest places in the country. It's just behind Seattle/NW US in terms of days without clouds. Not exaggerating.

It should be closer to 4 hours to get to Boyne from East Lansing. I've never been there, but it always takes me about 3.5 hours or so to get to Traverse City from EL and Boyne is a bit further north.

Lions 5-0
Michigan 6-0

Is it bad that I'm hoping Michigan destroys MSU this Saturday?

I'm having real trouble deciding who to cheer for...my family have always been die hard WOLVERINES....and now I've gone and jumped ship. At least it's not OSU...

Also, how bout them TIGERS!

And to the further comments down below Tigers are doing great and thank goodness they won last night. Better yet the Lions undefeated still (about time). Blue vs green hmmm???????????? (gotta keep peace in the house we have votes for both teams) Just wish I could be at the game but at stub hub prices I'll watch from the comforts of my living room.

Last, Only 1-person announcing good news. To the rest accepted congrats and brag a little you're going to be a doctor, how awesome:laugh:

Good luck to those of us still waiting.

sigh...giving up hope 🙁

any in-state acceptances yet today?

Nothing here and I'm instate. Maybe they haven't sent them out yet? We can only hope!

How are we supposed to go about paying the secondary application fee? is it online, or do we have to send a money order?
I need to submit my application by next week, and don't want to freak out last minute about not paying the fee.

Does anyone know if the school provides any financial aid for OOS students? It doesn't seem feasible for me to even consider this school based on the OOS tuition rates.

Congrats stolis! I believe there are scholarships and things like that but I would call the school to see what kind of aid the OOS students have gotten in the past.

Is there a nice library in east lansing for MSUCOM?

There isn't a library specifically for MSUCOM, but there are plenty of places to study. There are places within Fee Hall to study and you'd have access to the campus' main library (a ways from Fee and near the union). The vet med library and the law school libraries are fairly close to Fee as well.

As for the question about OOS tuition...I believe there are a significant number of people who score scholarships to help with costs...I'm not familiar with the specifics as I am an instate student. Check out the msucom website for the resources/information they provide on financial aid.

ACCEPTED!
YIKES!

cGPA: 3.6
MCAT: 30S

canadian applicant!!!

yipppppppppppeeeeeeeeeee!

thanks lijia, is it hard getting resources to study with though? Also East Lansing is my first choice but I was gonna wait to submit the $1000 deposit because I will be waiting to hear from allopathic schools. Does this site typically fill up quickly?

EL and DMC usually fill up in December however with the new way they're filling sites... It's not clear how things will fill. There's plenty of study resources, though IMO you won't need resources provided by the school to study.

For those of you OOS, apply for the OOS scholarship. If not, you're basically stuck with the vast majority to 100% of the cost. You will be in an absurd amount of debt by the time you can afford payments on it (250k principle with 6.8%+ rolling interest for 7-9+ years = ouch). I wouldn't attend OOS without that scholarship or the HPSP program... While this sounds ridiculous, administration will tell you the exact same thing.

Any current MSUCOM students want to explain if there's an orientation week, what's done in orientation and when does it all start?

Thanks!

Has anyone gotten their admissions package in the mail yet? I was accepted two weeks ago and still haven't received anything.

I think it took about a week and a half to get mine. I would just call the school Monday.

+1

also when is the official first day of school?

There's a 3-day orientation. It's pretty boring, and you won't remember most of what they say. I think the most important part of it was just meeting classmates.

Good luck tomorrow for everyone still waiting.
