MSU-COM Discussion Thread 2011-2012

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Does anyone know whether or not I would be able to extend my deadline to reply to an offer of admission to MSUCOM? Dec 1st is the deadline, but I'd like to extend it for a week or so for personal reasons.

Contact the admissions office, you never know. I extended mine for the secondary application.

So I am formally depressed right now🙁 I find it frustrating the system and I guess I should have put every ounce of volunteering I did down and not relied on decent stats and almost 10yrs of health care experience and a MI resident.

So I'd agree it sounds like some rejections have gone out, anyone now how to find out if your waitlisted and where at on that list. Can you update your app if you've done new things to improve chances?

I guess moving is around the corner. 😕

You can update your app but make sure the stuff you send in is significant (not oh I did 3 more hours). At least one person on SDN has said she received a rejection letter, once they review your application and decide you will not be admitted they send you a rejection. However, the people in the "middleground" for stats will often not get a rejection until the very end of the cycle. I didn't hear anything until end of April last year...and it wasn't even really a rejection...it was a sorry we're full try again next year type thing. As far as the waitlist they will email you if you are placed on either of the waitlists.

If you think 800 volunteer hours is a lot, the current admissions c/o 2016 has an average of 2,065 hours, 3.66 GPA and 27 MCAT.

what the F***????? I'm thinking people BS'd on those hours, ridiculous! How is that possible? Does 2,065 hours include extracurriculars, work, or research? 2,065 hours in volunteering alone!?!?!?!?!?!?! yikes! I had nowhere near that number!

A full time job is roughly 2000 hours per year, so if you are old like me, its not that hard  However, I did not have 2000 volunteer hours. Probably close to 1500, since they include high school activities and I did coach a gym team at the YMCA for approximately 3 years.

I guess from that perspective it seems possible, but I was super busy getting straight A's and doing research as a full-time student in undergrad while working a part-time job. I did my fair share of volunteering but 2,065 for just the volunteering category is nuts!

edit:

Seriously though? I just thought about it again... 2,065 is the average! Lol! We must have lots of non-trads b/c that is pretty damn near impossible to do in 4 years of undergrad (not counting stuff from HS)

BTW I'm heading to the gym -- its 445 am -- you studying:laugh:? Meet you there!

That data has to be skewed or something cause I had 600 volunteer hours. Someone else must have had 3400 hours to balance me off lol! My stats are pretty close to the mcat/gpa averages too. Welp, I must've had good essays then!!

I'm pretty sure 2065 hours is volunteering/extracurriculars/work. It's impossible for a class to average that amount of hours from volunteering alone when the average age is only 23.

and my age definitely increased that average! LOL😱

Idk....I had over 3760 hours of work experience alone when I applied last year at 23. I worked full time while going to school full time (about 3000 of it is considered clinical--and counting since I'm still working full time).

I had around 920 hrs of volunteer work (about half of it from high school).

Then I had another 2050 hrs or so of EC's (again much of it dating back to HS) and a lot of it is from traveling EC's where I was abroad for 2 weeks at a time on academic related trips or playing on sports leagues consistently over the years. The hours add up quickly that way...but in general I like to keep busy, so aside from needing to work full time, it didn't feel like I was doing anything extraordinarily "extra" in addition to school.

The average full time job is 2000/year. I did a lot of volunteering in high school at the YMCA--I had over 1000 as a gymnastic coach for a competitive team, so I think its possible.

Yeah I agree. I didn't event start working full time until the latter part of my undergrad, and those hours are only current as of the time I sent in my secondary...the hours add up very fast if you're involved in something consistently and over the course of a few years.

I had over 2000 volunteer hours (under-estimated) and was under 23 when accepted. Plus another ~3000-4000 work hours. The hours go all the way back through high school so accumulating 2000 hours across 7-8+ years isn't difficult. 800 would be fairly difficult to accumulate in a short period of time, they're looking for longer term interest towards service.

Bonus: the hours count towards SSP applications. If you have some big volunteer numbers, be sure to apply.

They mentioned using iClickers in class, but I thought most people don't attend lectures. Does that mean that iClicker questions don't count towards your grade?

I just tried it and it said safari couldn't see it. I did pay my deposit on line. I'd just call the school tomorrow.

does anyone have a timeline of events that has the first month or so of med school, like when to arrive in michigan and whatnot

They will let you know when iClicker questions count for points. People attend those lectures.

I attended the MOAFP meeting this summer. Some lecturers used iclickers--not all of them worked! :/

Just sent in my deposit

*Hope I get the DMC campus!!* 😛

They will have an some random mandatory lectures on occasion, which they use the iClickers. It varies from class to class. Some courses used them for bonus points or points towards your grade. Other times they just use them during lecture to be more interactive with the students, such as during review lectures. Also, classes administered lab quizzes with the iClicker.

First off, I want to say congrats to those who have been accepted!!!

I am wondering...I was wait-listed almost two months ago now. I am aware it may be quite a while before I hear an answer. However, I am curious..is it a good thing for me that I was wait-listed this early? Thanks 🙂:xf:

Hey guys my application was verified on 11/4 and released on 11/10 and I still haven't received a secondary. Is there anyone else that applied recently and still hasn't received a secondary?

I sent in my acceptance materials in the mail but I need a couple more weeks to send in the deposit. Will I get an email notification if they received my other acceptance materials?

I waited 3 weeks for my secondary.

Just curious I didn't think they'd sent out letters yet for wait list. Anyone else get one and when did you get yours?

Just wondering if I should call to check on status.

Accepted 9/7/11!! But I am withdrawing my acceptance at MSU-COM tomorrow.

So for those of you on the waitlist, there is one spot available!!

Good Luck!:luck:

It was 10/5. I was surprised I heard that early. It probably wouldn't hurt to call but I really have no idea.

Your MD apps says MSU is your first choice. Why are you withdrawing??

MSU's MD program is my first choice. I am not too crazy about the new curriculum for the coming year. I would prefer to takes courses in a more established curriculum. 🙁 Also if I want to specialize, I don't want extra hoops to jump through to obtain an allopathic residency. I also liked the environment more at the other school I attended.

i'm sure you will be fine, but what if you don't get accepted anywhere else? or have you already been?

Anybody know the schedule for the summer semester? I think it starts in late June, but when does it end? Is there any time between Summer and Fall semesters?

If you think you will be putting your deposit down after Dec 1st, I would call and make sure that it's ok first!

I'm not sure at all... but I'd imagine we get one week off between semesters. Last year's beginning class had their anatomy final Monday the 22nd and fall semester started Mon the 29th.

it says the deposit is due by Feb 1, so you still have time

Officially withdrew my acceptance just now!! Good Luck everyone! It's a wonderful school! :luck:

i'm surprised this forum is so dead today! nobody heard anything? boring wednesday...🙁
