Kind of light - 3 horses turned out in the field - later on 2 horses eating (my old 2), one down with a broken leg. Not sure if it was just on well placed kick, or all out war. The horse that was down had to be destroyed.

It happens with horses, never fun though!!

Or perhaps the horse fell? I really don't think you can say that they "killed" it in any way.

Highly unlikely. Horses kick eachother - it is herd politics. Ofcourse the kick was nothing more then putting the horse in the place, but it does happen, I have seen it a few times.

The word kill might not be the right one - it does imply they had intent...

It could have been an accident...not too long ago I saw a horse rear up fall backward, snap its neck and die in under a minute....however....I don't know where these horses are but I'd look for bullets. Every now and then you get some kids that think it'd be fun to just shot and kill something. I'd also look for yew or other toxic plants (depending on where you are they are in foliage now). I've encountered a number of cases of good intented people feeding horses toxic plants and/or throwing their yard clippings into an ajacent pasture thinking they're doing good for the horses.....

I am not posting pictures - however trust me when I say it was broken leg mostly likely from a kick!

How can you say a fall is highly unlikely? I've seen several fractures that were a result of slip/fall situations and had nothing to do with other horses even if they were turned out in a group.

I am not going to go back and fourth - the field is dry, flat, it was feeding time, the horse who was kicked had recently been added, and they all had shoes on - the fracture (which was a clean break, no x-rays required) was about 1/3 of the way up the tibia, so it required significant force. Yes it could have been many things, but statisticall speaking I am almost certain it was a kick!

OMG I read this SO WRONG....I read it as the other two horses were eating the 3rd...that's why I kinda overlooked the leg break comment b/c I just pictured this lions devouring a zebra kinda thing....I was confused b/c I didn't think horses would do this but since no one else commented on it I just figured they knew something I didn't....I thought it might be like when hippos play with dead things...anyway....

sorry for your loss....at least you didn't have to see what I thought was going on....

HA HA HA - yes you did mis-read that!!!

That's why I made the comments I did.....I totally overlooked the fact that he was alive when you found him and thought you didn't know how he died....

I really was shocked that no one mentioned the herbivore canabalism thing and thought that I must be really really stupid. I even made a note to ask my vet about it...

I think it's time to go to bed.

Don't feel bad. I thought the same thing when I read the original post the first time 😱. Boy were we confused!

Haha, so did I, I was quite confused/shocked the first couple of times I read it.

I say let's blame Iain! 😉

Speaking of naughty horses...I got beat up by a horse last week. Standing in the wrong place at the wrong time and took his forehead right in my nose. Ouch! Earned myself a trip to the ER, it was quite the bloody scene.

I think we have all been there - playing polo I got headbutt once, bloody nose like no one believed! The ref. ended up blowing the whistle, and sending me too the ambulance to sort it out!!

Horses are hard headed - in every sense!
