hi can anybody pl tell me where to study for clinical vigenttes.

The vignette questions are no different than the other questions they just have a background story/chart with them. I say study for them like you study for everything else because in reality they are no different. I would say about 75% or more of the questions on these can be answered without even referring to the extra material.

can anyone tell the difference between mutualism and symbiosis?

Symbiosis is an interactive association between members of 2 populations in which both the organisms live in close proximity. The relationship may or may not benefit each other.
When the relationship benefits each other,it is called mutualism. In other words, mutualism is a type of symbiosis.Hope this helps!

What would be better to study from, the kaplan book or the BRS books? How many pages are in each book? What are the advantages and dissadvantages of each?

BRS books contain around 300 pages each. Kaplan I think has around 1000 total. The advantage of Kaplan is it's more concise and has a dental focus (H&N anatomy, dental anatomy), only advantage of BRS is it's more comprehensive.

i havent yet thought about retakin part I but I now am does anyone have any thoughts? personally i dont have any dentists of any kind in the family and i really am not sure what i should do.

Do you want to specialize? If so, you should talk to the grad programs at Case and see what they say. I don't think anyone truly knows how the new NBDE format will affect speciality stats yet...

i do and i dont...i want to do an externship or 2 to see what the options are but i also dont want to be wasting my time if you know what i mean. I wish that they would just rank our class because i think it could only help me and it would give me a better idea how where i stand but i dont see that happening. but you are right talking to someone actually running a program is better than just BS'ing on here.

so can you guys please let me know what is the best way to practice the computerized format of test, as i am working on released exams but they are all in paper? so do you think i should try online kaplan or crack the nbde questions??? or probably you know of some better way??
thansk a lot!!

I completely agree about ranking our class! It drives me crazy when people say "I would have tried harder if I knew we were going to be ranked" as their reason for voting against the ranking. I wonder what the faculty will decide...

i doubt they will go against the vote which was 60 some percent against ranking but i dont think that most of the people understand that they are sending our grades either way. you are very correct about those people who would have "tried harder", that is a lame excuse and in my mind defines what kind of person they really are

try to find USC part I database on CD. It has all the release exams on PC format. I think I saw it in the classified section. Good luck

taking the exam on the computer isnt much different i dont think you will need to practice for it, what i found annoying was in the vignette portion how the chart window was formatted but there is nothing you can do about that.

Thanks for your info Poumpy. Can you please let me know where I can find the USC part I database on CD?
I don't know how to search classified...
Do I have to post that I want to buy this CD or sth? cuz the exam day is in 2 wks and don't have much time for that...
Appreicate any help...

Can you please tell me what was confusing about those vignette charts?? Was the question in a chart format or sth...? Are there any samples of those chart available?

all i can really say is that there are questions where you need to refer to the chart which looks fine but you have to click and pull it up and resie the window so you can see the question while you are looking at the chart and i just found it all annoying.

about the study ,, it is so important to understand more than memorise like a machine , because 90 % of the questions need you to think and be carefull from some words might make u think of certan answer which is wrong , so if you understand you can answer right , if u just memorise u will fall in the tricks.
I just did the exam , I studied only decks and some old exams .
I think that was enough to study , but I had to read the decks one more time ( I did 3 ) and to do some more exams , plus I studied kaplan Q bank .....it is wasting of time and money , it ment to be for the USMLE not for the dental board.

hi pompy,
the thread you are referring it says it doesnt exist.could u pl send it again or check by urself if it is working.pl do the needful.i have exams in few days time and i want to check the site to.please.

I don'tnow what is wrong. Sorry about it.

Thanks everyone for the great thread!! Your scores give me a sense that 340/400 will give you a composite score of around 92-3 in the new format,

but does anyone know if it was the same in 2004: I mean did 60 mistakes overall give you a comp score of 92 back then too or it was lower??

I am just asking this to see how well I did on the practice exam and appreciate your help!!

Next round of scores since the blackout date went out today according to people at my school. Post 'em up. 😀

Are you hearing the same trend that boards scores have gone back to pre-2007 levels? Everyone at Pacific was required to take the boards before the blackout so I won't hear much else.

Not really. The majority (over 50% or so) of our class has scored between 82 and 86. There are a few of my friends in the high 70's and then I only know of a couple 89's and one 90. I think there have also been 10+ to fail so far. I honestly don't know everybody's scores but these are some of the things I have heard through the grapevine.

hi
is buying 2009 decks ne cessary for giving the part 1 in next couple of months??pls let me know if u guys have followed 2009 decks, those who gave in jan and feb...

I can see the JCNDE people during whatever meetings they have on the blackout

"As you can see here, scores from June 08-Jan 09 test were scored using a modified Arlington scale with a standard deviation set t...hmm, looks like Bill in Statistics forgot to carry the 1 here. ARGH, our evil pot to foil the specialty programs from using our test is now all for nought. Revamp the test yet again, plummet their scores deep into the earth! MUAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHHAHAHA!"

orlok and armor: did you guys read kaplan cover to cover? or did you just use it as a reference? alot of people on sdn say that the kaplan book is way too comprehensive...but then again they didnt do as well as you guys did.

with all the books that you guys named, did you read all of them completely or if not how did you pick & choose different sections from different books.

out of the books that you named, which ones were the most/least helpful? thanks

count orlock and armorshell, which materials did you guys focus on the most? What was the most beneficial study materials. I don't want to use the decks, because I like to understand the concepts, and not just memorize facts. Should i focus on the kaplan book, or should I focus more so on the BRS books? Or, would you use both? And if so, which one would you use more? What about the first aid books or moseby? If you guys were going to take it over again, what would be your gameplan to study, materials and time spent. Please give details.

I read everything cover to cover. It is just one of my obsessive compulsive glitches. I have a hard time picking up a book and not starting at the beginning and then finishing it.

I think the best resource for overall review would be the kaplan book, but for me it was just a review of what I learned in most of my classes and the notes I had. if you are starting from scratch then I could be way off base.

I have only looked at the anatomy and physiology BRS books, and both are pretty excellent. For any of the others I have no idea. The kaplan book is pretty good, but I feel like the biochem. and anatomy sections are kind of scattered and tough to follow. The first aid USMLE book is good for biochem, path, and micro. It has a lot of little one liner facts that are good to answer questions. If I had to study again.... obviously, I would not change anything, but then again I feel like I had a very strong base before I even started to review the material.

Agree. I didn't read Kaplan cover to cover but I did read each section I used beginning to end. The only thing I didn't use Kaplan for was biochem, and I thought the physiology section was a little weak but otherwise everything was good. Agree with Count about the "review" concept.

I didn't use the BRS anatomy (I used Concise Anatomy by Moore) but I did use BRS for Physio, Path, Micro and Biochem. I really thought the books were excellent, boards relevent, concise and thorough. Read them cover to cover. First Aid one-liners were awesome especially for micro and path.

If I had to study again I would have reviewed histology better but that just me, and I can easily remember missing 4-5 simple histology questions which I am now kicking myself for not reviewing more. Also, I'd pick up a NBDE part 2 review book and do a run through of oral path.

Unrelated question. Count, is that Nosferatu in your avatar?

I mean geez armor if you would have just remember that it the respiratory epithelium is not the GI tract then you could have gotten those 5 questions right and scored an infinity! 🙂

The avatar is of Graf Orlok aka Count Orlok. The movie title was actually called Nosferatu, but the sexy vampire was the good ole' Count himself. Now, in most cases Count Orlok and Nosferatu are used simultaneously.

when you say Kaplan book, are you talking about dentEssentials or USMLE kaplan book?

I am talking about the NBDE Part I Lecture Notes by kaplan. I never picked up the dentessentials so I have no idea how good it is.

Is there something called recorrection as well?? never heard of this.... !!!!???

Hey I can feel for you..im awaiting my result so very scared as well...can u please tell me what your breakdown score was and what was your raw score that you got 80 as your final score? Thanks!

I used Kaplan, BRS Physio, Path, Biochem, Micro, Concise Dental Anatomy and Morphology (Fuller), Essential Clinical Anatomy (Moore), USMLE First Aid and Goljan's path lectures when I wasn't buried in a book (Driving, doing dishes, on the bus).

NOTE THE DISTINCT LACK OF DECKS.

Studied 2.5 weeks, 12-14 hour days. The month prior I read the Moore book cover to cover. I was supposed to take the test on the 10th and prometric royally bonered my scheduling (thank god I called them in a fit of paranoia) and I ended up having to drive 2 hours south, sleep on a friend's couch and take it 2 days early. ALWAYS CONFIRM BY PHONE WITH PROMETRIC, EVEN IF THEY SEND YOU THE EMAIL.

hey
thnks for all your guidance in this thread...I would like to know that where did you get the goljan's path lectures frm? ive tried looking it on google, bt didnt find ..do u have some link? or can i buy them frm u?

Count Orlok,
So you think that the Kaplan book is good to use? Was it the dent essentials kaplan book, or was it just the kaplan lecture notes that you used? How many pages is included in the lecture notes? And also, did you read the USMLE book cover to cover, or just use it to clarify things? Also, which BRS books would be most useful? Which ones did you use? Which ones did you read cover to cover, and which ones did you just look at a little? You said that if you had to do it all over again, you wouldn't change anything. But what EXACTLY did you use to study? and how much did you study from each resource? I am wondering if i should buy the kaplan lecture notes and the USMLE book and read both of those. And am also wondering which BRS books should i buy to study with. One more thing, how did you study for Dental anatomy? What resource did you use for that? Thanks.

hi..
i am really amazed at the scores u ppl are talking abt..i would be dancing if i got an 88 or 89...but thanks to all u geniuses..i feel that if u can get 99..i can try to get a 91 atleast...really great scores....CONGRATULATIONS to all of u..🙂
and thankyou for helping with all that material info..but nobody asked abt DA...where did u guys read that from..i really get confused with occlusion concepts...thanks for all ur help..🙂

lecture notes with like 800-900 pages. i read the USMLE book except the stuff like psych and behavior science that are not on the exam. I have not seen all the BRS books I have only seen anatomy and physiology from a med school friend and they are decent. I cannot tell you how to study or what to study from because everybody learns differently. These are things I used but I am sure others have too, but there is no one key. Most resources cover the basics just try to retain as much as possible. For DA i studied from my class notes from dental anatomy, occlusion, and pros classes at my dental school. wheelers is pretty good if you have time to read it all.

I studied most of my DA and occlusion from class notes. All of that stuff was covered very well in my DA, occlusion, and pros classes. I suggest you dig out those notes and look at those. For a text I think wheelers is decent and pretty much any introductory pros book will give some good info on occlusion.

Hi,
