New Dental School: High Point University

HPU Workman School of Dentistry is going to blow the roof off dental education as it is known today. This committee of seasoned dental educators sat down and composed a list of all of the things they hated about dental school education and designed their school and curriculum to eliminate these and improve on the clinical / practice model. The Dean of HPU Dental is Dr. DeRossi. He was the former Dean of Chapel Hill Dental School. One of the Nations most respected institutions. Dr. Ali is a Harvard trained Oral Med specialist well respected and admired in academia. These men know what they're doing. They have a long track record of success.

Some points to be eliminated form typical education:

First year students will not spend countless hours in long boring lecture halls, instead they will rotate through local hospitals and study oral medicine, pathology, neurology etc...with hands on experience.

Nothing worse in dental school than receiving a lower grade than a colleague simply because they got the "Dr. Easygrader" while you were stuck with "Dr. Perfection", even though you know your work was better. Like medical students, dental students will now follow the medical training model. There will not be a large building where all patients come for care. Instead, students will practice in community based, state of the art, dental offices throughout their entire four years, learning not only how to provide dental care, but also how to refer to specialists, work directly with assistants in four handed dentistry, and some of the intricacies of successful practice management.

Digital dentistry will be the primary focus of dental education. When you graduate from Workman School of Dentistry you will not be prepared for dentistry the way it's practiced today, but the way it will be practiced tomorrow!

This is a joke right? You have a lot to learn as you progress through this process. This is a clear example of how our profession is going downhill and giving all power away. 1st it was the insurance companies and now DSO takeover. What will the landscape look like eventually?

Although all of my predental colleagues wish to own a practice one day, and all are vehemently against corporate encroachment, it’s really not up to us. ADA is getting big greedy and are the ones that will destroy the profession.

For any unaware predental, Dentistry has enjoyed solo private practice ownership. AKA the whole “make good money and help people at the same time” idea we all came here for.

Corporate dentistry is a very recent trend that is essentially using their unlimited funds to purchase dental practices and combine them under their single corporate, non dentist ownership where they employ YOU. Think non dentists buying you out and deciding how much you pay and the hours you work.

Their main issue is having willing dentists work for them. Why would they, right?

The idea now is that because Dr. Workman, the CEO of the largest dental corporation has made a massive public donation to High Point University, their ultimate goal is to pump out lots of dentists. They do this by removing requirements to make it easy to become a dentist.

When anyone can become a dentist, the bargaining power is lost. Thus, when there is an oversupply of dentists, there is lots of sweaty competition, leading to basically what you see with any career: ****ty hours, ****ty pay, and worst of all - someone else keeping the bulk of the cash money from your labor.

So for all the predents with a low gpa overwhelmed by the tough competition to enter your dream career - well this dynamic is EXACTLY what makes your dream career a dream. what dream is there to be had when anyone else can attain such a goal as well.

For Dr. Workman, this means their graduates are now stuck with massive debt, are less educated, and ripe to be picked up for their heartland dental firm. Infact this is a selling point of theirs, join our school and go debt free by working for heartland. AKa indentured servititude because we ALL no there ain’t no free lunch and you best beleive they have nefarious intentions in their contracts.

Long story short - you want your dream to stay a dream? Put in the hard work to make it. You want your dream to turn into a nightmare? Heartland dental owned high point university is right there to welcome you with open arms!

i agree with your message about going to cheaper schools. Your last sentence there is the thing tho, most dental students r simply not that intelligent to realize the financial situation they're getting themselves into. They're smart enough academically to get into schools, but academic intelligence is much different than real-world/real-life intelligence. And because they've been on that academic path for so long, they simply lack real-world knowledge such as finances and stuff like that. At least a large majority of them from what I've seen.

Yes, I know there’s “high crime” but y’all have never been to big city areas then because I feel like HP is in a very small and calm area in comparison to where other schools are located.

being in the first handful of classes at a new dental school is going to be a nightmare of an experience for the students who will be treated as guinea pigs for a curriculum that will need to be constantly changed until the recipe is edible. these schools pop up purely for profit these days. if you dont get in anywhere else than it's still an opportunity of a lifetime to become a dentist, but if you have other options stay away from new schools like this one.

They don't even require a DAT score to be submitted... I mean the whole point of standardized tests is to serve as an equalizer. It's why nearly every institution at every level requires some sort of standardized test. It's foolish of them to think standardized tests are an illegitimate means to select potential dental students. I do believe there was a Harvard (I think it was a Harvard study, I could be wrong) study that showed clinicians graduating from more rigorous schools were more likely to correctly follow clinical guidelines when prescribing antibiotics. I'm sure this correlates to many other aspects of being a clinician.

Yes, every school, even good ones, have a certain percentage of incompetent students (for example, recently a classmate of mine sectioned a mandibular molar from mesial to distal). What will happen when your matriculating average is full of low quality applicants? Then you get half your class sectioning teeth in the wrong direction, perforating sinuses, perforating furcations, prescribing antibiotics for reversible pulpitis, prescribing schedule II/III pain killers when NSAIDS suffice, etc.

Dentists are privileged and they don't realize it. We aren't medical doctors, but yet we can do surgery, place implants, moderate sedations, etc without many regulations. What happens when you let a bunch of inherently incompetent people who will pay anything to own the title of "doctor in our profession?" Then not only does our profession become saturated, but the ban hammer comes done upon us regulating the entire profession (affecting everyone, including the competent clinicians)

Of course, the ADA is corrupt and won't do anything about this. I do believe the current president was pretty corrupt in the admissions process at his previous school he served at. Nepotism was very strife. Also he is on record for saying "Aspen Dental is the future of dentistry." I probably should stop there.
