Got the credit check too, Is this a safe bet? I put potential dates for this year in bold (if they choose to keep the same intervals). I am not sure if we are still to hear final decisions by the end of September.

By rounds, does this mean each applicant will go through 3 rounds of notifications at each step? Thanks!

Last year I did not know to put name/SS#/etc on my paperwork and got a credit check on the 15th but no award notification. This year I did include those items and no credit check as of yet. Keeping fingers crossed!
Which paperwork are you referring to? The general application?

How could it let you submit without your information? sorry. I'm just genuinely curious as I'm worried I did something like that lol

At the top of each document you submit you are supposed to have a header with you name, SSN, and discipline. You can submit the documents without the header since its just something you add onto the physical or electronic document, but they specified in the handbook they want all that written on it. I've seen on prior threads people not do it and still get the award, so I definitely wouldn't fret over such a minute requirement!

Yeah I just logged onto Credit Karma and it says it updated yesterday. How do we get it to update again? Or does it happen automatically 1x per week?
credit karma will let you know whenever someone pulls your credit. it doesnt tell you just once per week like other people think. it tells you in real time

You sound pretty sure of yourself but this is what Credit Karma told me when I inquired if Hard Inquiries show up in real time. I'm obviously in a position to hope there's a delay in the info presented on my account lol

Also, I just called and we should hear back no later than September 30th!

I was reading through last year's thread and saw mentions of countersignatures and finalists, is the process Credit Check->Finalist notification->Receiving a document to sign? Anyone know what chance you have after receiving a credit check and then a finalist email?

Based on what I’m seeing, it sounds like the credit check isn’t as big a deal as I thought? I wonder if it only means that our application was submitted properly and had all the necessary documents... What does everyone think though?

I agree.

I feel like the credit check is indicative of making it past some type of cut. If not, they would have to run credit checks on over 1,000 applicants. I do not believe they would spend extra time doing this if they were not interested in the people? I am not fully sure though, wish we knew more!

The first two times I applied I did not get credit checks. This third time I did.

I wanna say credit checks are similar to the interview process for any graduate program. Not to say the criteria for review is the same but getting a credit check means you passed some sorta preliminary review and it means you’re one step closer. Doesn’t guarantee anything but closer nonetheless. Just my guess based on the fact that not everyone gets a credit check. I counted 12-13(rough count of 3 pages) finalist from last year, not sure how many received a credit check(there were quite a bit).

I am very grateful and excited to have received a credit check. This led to me to do some further reading, and I found some horror stories on NHSC and their dealings. I’m sort of afraid now, can anyone shed light or have more insight? I’m referring to specifically for some odd reason not fulfilling and owing three times the amount plus interest. I don’t think I will have any issues but, I’m sure so did the people who I read either got sick later on, couldn’t find a job or got fired. Hffffff 🙁

It is true that if you cannot fulfill the requirement you will be required to pay back three times the original amount plus the maximum amount of interest (they give the equation for how they calculate that in the program guidelines). However, I don't think this is common at all.
If you cannot find a job, the NHSC will find one for you/send you somewhere. If you get fired from one specific site, you can always go work at another NHSC approved site - there are many. In terms of "getting sick" you are allowed a maximum of 35 days way from your site per year for vacation, sick leave, etc. However, you can get a medically approved extended temporary leave of absence when work becomes 'impossible' (like cancer treatment, terminal illness of immediate family member, or other disabling situations). You will still be required to fulfill your service obligation unless you are permanently disabled. -> How to Comply with Scholarship Program Leave Policies | NHSC

Good to know! Credit Karma didn't really give me a straight answer. Appreciate it

It is not hard to fulfill your obligation. My spouse received NHSC loan repayment for the two years and fulfilled her obligation with no issues. All you have to do is report (bi-annually maybe?) annually on your work site to make sure you still work there and the site administrator will confirm that you do. If you decide you don't like where you work, you can always transfer to a new site (barring you meet the minimum HPSA score requirement). If you get sick, you file that you did and they just extend your contract out for how long you're off work. We had to do this because we had a child. Don't be getting freaked over this.

Now, you will have to payback three times the amount (with interest) they paid for your education if you stiff the contract. You have to keep your location options open. If you're expecting to stay in your hometown after graduation and live in the burbs, you're going to have a bad time. There aren't many HPSA's in populated areas, but there are some.

I am not able to pull a credit score or register with credit karma as I have not yet established any credit. Does anyone know if this means that I will simply not receive a notification of any type of credit check but may still be under consideration?

When I called I was told no credit is perfectly fine.. just unsure if this means I should of still received some type of email indicating that they had inquired. Thanks for any help!

You should still get notified of a credit inquiry. Not sure if it's a soft or hard pull, though.

Did you actually try to run a report on creditreport.com: Your Free Credit Report - No Credit Card Required. and they were unable to do so?

I had a security freeze on my Equifax credit account; do you guys know if that affects their inquiry :/

Oh man, we got scheduled maintenance coming up this weekend! Doesn't that mean we might be getting close to finalist emails? I could have sworn that in previous years that they typically have scheduled maintenance right before (within a week) the first round of emails gets sent out. Can anyone confirm? Or am I grasping at smoke... coming up with wild theories to speed up the agonizingly slow passage of time between credit checks and finalist email?

Ahh should I contact NHSC and let them know or should I just wait to see if they're actually interested?

Honestly, I have no idea whatsoever. I think it wouldn't hurt to call them and let them know that your credit has been frozen and that you are unfreezing it now. @Stoplyingaboutyourstats do you know if there is a way to know if a pull "failed"?

It could be that most years the finalist emails come out around the same time, and that they also do maintenance the same week every year. I feel like this makes more sense than there being a specific correlation and the credit check timeline is a better indicator of when we might hear back, as they said its a slow process.

I had universal security freezes up (because my data had been breached the year before) during this process last year and somehow *still passed and got to finalist/award.* So there's hope! I called and they made it sound like I was a goner but my suspicion is that, as the federal gov, they can do a "soft" pull such that they can even see with a freeze. Otherwise I wouldn't have passed so -- I hope this means you'll be ok, too!

But if I could do it over again, I would have realized I had a freeze and handled it in early summer because the stress of all that was very unnecessary. The process is long enough that you may have to un-freeze multiple times (it seems like 4 weeks is usually the amount of time they unfreeze for).

Last year when they had a scheduled maintenance— some of the finalist (cause only some of them posted about it) had a “participant” option on the drop down menu. The same people became finalists a couple days later and then got countersigned.
Not sure how they’re doing it this year though since the timeline is completely different, and it seems a little close to the credit check date.

Interesting! Should everyone have the “participant” option on their portal?

Son of a gun, I ain't got that fancy drop-down. I didn't have it last year either... and we all know how that ended for me 🙁

I don’t either, does anyone in this group have it? Do you mind liking the message if you have the drop down “participant” message please?

@predentals I don't even have a roles tab but I know people who have applied before/ to multiple scholarships would have it
Oh ok, I thought everyone would have cause i had it last year when I applied for the first. And the NHSC scholarship was the only thing I applied for. I mean same with this year but I’m a second time applicant.

Weird did you always have the roles tab or did it show up later on in the cycle?

So since the portal changed for Hopeandbelieve2991 should we expect finalist emails to be sent out soon?
