At least you don't have to worry about 1 year construction projects taking 5 years. I hate Phoenix construction...it is NEVER finished!!! :meanie:

Hmm ive been living around DC for 10 years... not one day when i dont see construction. i dont want to know the millions of dollars wasted every day. Do we really need more bridges?? almost every street i know of has been widened at least once. and I have seen 2 farms disapear in the suburbs... probably the only ones left that had held out. And more and more town houses!! that are INSANELY priced. why spend 1 million on a townhouse??? sighh... i love the area but hate it at the same time.

Not to mention the land that is now where my parents live (one of those "mini" city communities) was supposed to be used for the national geographic. the land was donating in the will of the person who passed away, but through loop holes they were able to build houses on it instead of it going to wildlife. 😡😡😡

Yeah DC and northern VA are pretty bad in terms of over development! 5 years in Blacksburg for undergrad was such a fresh breath of air! Kentucky is not too shabby either.

JCG - He is indeed! And there is only one girl I know doing a masters in Kentucky... 🙂

Haha yeah I just got back from around the wonderful DC area and let me tell you, cutthroat drivers indeed. They will put a thick skin on you really fast... And the development is CRAZY. I crave coming back to little blacksburg, where you can get from one side of town to the other in well under 10 minutes!

Twelve - I just drove back from OKC (went out for Christmas, then back to the east coast) you are SO right about the roads. Flat as anything but super uneven. And... I have only been out to OKC...5 times maybe? My parents moved there a year ago well after I was established in Blacksburg, so I am in state thanks to them. I cant say I am a true Oklahoma-ian.

Level, shmevel. Just drive faster and you won't notice the potholes as much. 😛

Mmm, too bad KY doesn't have a vet school. All those horses, and people who actually spend money on them . . .

That must be why the speed limits are so high out there. Its not uncommon for me to set my cruise on 85 and still be passed by others lol

And I totally agree that Kentucky needs to jump on the vet school bandwagon... *sigh*

Me too so they won't take up anymore spots at Auburn! Grr

One reason for why KY does not have a vet school is because of the number of large equine veterinary practices that exist in the state. Those practices are well established and fund quite a bit of the research in the Veterinary Science department at the University of Kentucky. So part of the dilemma is that if a veterinary school is established business will be taken away from these large practices and less funding will end up into the hands of researchers (which is of course another very important aspect of veterinary medicine).

This is the information that was passed on to me from discussions with some of the professors in vet science and animal science at University of Kentucky.

Alas. From what I've heard/seen, the vet schools in places like northern VA (VA Tech's Equine Medical Center) and Florida, the appearance and growth of private practices offering specialty care has affected the equine caseload at the vet schools, so I suspect that a vet school in Kentucky would have trouble attracting as many equine cases as one would think. It's just a nice dream. 😉

Even so, KY's motto seems to be, why mess with a good thing.

I've been griping about KY not having a vet school for years (we're the freaking horse capital of the world, for crying out loud!), but the explanation of competition for funding and caseload with the big equine hospitals actually somes some amount of sense.
FWIW, Kentucky is totally awesome, although I fear that I have become really, really spoiled working with great vets and clients who don't hesitate to spend $$$$$$$$$$$$$ on their horses.
And I still haven't heard a thing from any of the schools I applied to.

Yeah like I said earlier, that factor I explained earlier is what many of the faculty members here at the University of Kentucky have said about the vet school situation. So to me, it must be a fairly large factor if it is coming from the professionals.

Well, here we are. Still haven't been rejected but I fear that the letter's in the mail from Iowa. I'm a "viable candidate" at Kansas which is a fancy way of saying we want to keep you waiting and hoping until the last second at which we will reject you. Prince Edward Island is supposed to be sending out info soon on interviews but I'm not holding my breath. I knew not to have high hopes for my first application cycle but I'm tired of waiting because there is still a tiny bit of hope and it's exhausting. I feel like I'm in stuck in limbo like my history teacher used to say some cultures believed in. Basically, you're dead but you don't go to a heaven or hell you just float around in what I'd image would be a grey boring nothingness.

oh man, i'm sorry you have to wait so long! Be optimistic about Kansas, if you are OOS i think your chances of moving up are good because I have noticed a lot of SDN applicants who are getting OOS interviews are getting ALL of them...4,5,6 lol insane. They obviously can't choose all schools! so i would bet that list moves up at least 50 people. I hope you hear something *good* soon! 😀

I thought this was perfect since so many of us seem to be continuously doing this every day sometimes multiple times a day.

Yes....only super secret smiley club members get access to them.

Ok fine, nope, they're just nabbed off other sites and posted the same way you post any other image.

Just a word of caution to be careful when you're posting images linked from other sites. A lot of site admins don't take kindly to that and can change the images to something vulgar for offsite viewers.

...not that I've ever done such a thing 😉

ummm.... I don't know yet? I'm waiting to decide after the open house at Va Md. I'm giving myself an April 1st deadline. I think it is really going to come down to: 1) Do I want to leave Blacksburg? 2) How badly? 3) Is it going to be worth the extra 15 k to go to Missouri? and finally, the all important 4) What do with my goats, either way...

I haven't posted my stats yet; I was going to wait until I decided, but I think I might do it while I am on break. If nothing else, I might get some important input 😉.

Nyanko, now you have me panicked... I think I'll stay with the regular smileys unless I have something uberimportant.

haha, well the option that's the best of both worlds is just saving the image and putting it somewhere like your own photobucket and linking it from there instead of hotlinking from someone else's site. 😉

Okay...I am going to reveal my extreme computer illiteracy, so bear with me, please!

What do you mean by hotlinking? Do you mean using the 'insert link' or 'insert image' buttons on the toolbar in the reply to thread message thingy? I just copy/pasted the swing one from another site--is that equivalent to bringing it up from your own photo bucket for admin purposes?

So, for example. The site where you got the smiley from is:

http://www.gashing.com/smile/animated/anim_26.gif

If the owner/admin of gashing.com decided that they didn't want their bandwidth being used by people outside of their domain or places they link, he or she could either block the image from being displayed on an outside site (fairly harmless/innocuous - it just wouldn't show up anymore) or set it to display something in place of the image (could be something harmless like 'HOTLINKING NOT ALLOWED FROM THIS SITE" or something...questionable, depending on the person's sense of humor).

The way to circumvent this if you don't have your own webspace/domain is to right click and save the image to your hard drive, go to some place like photobucket and start an account, upload it there and then use the URL from there to link it instead of the URL from the original site.

Does that make sense?
