~NonTraditionals~: Ages

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm 21 with two kids, a husband, a dog, a cat, a mortgage, and a previous career as a model/actress. I'm starting from scratch now and hoping to matriculate when I'm around 26. Maybe not so non-trad in age, but pretty non-trad anyway.

I just turned 30 today and I applied today to medical school. Woo hoo!
Warm Regard,
Alexander

I'm 28 years old giving up a 10 year career in IT 100k/yr that has been much less than rewarding. Can't wait to live like a student again and rack up mountains of debt (insert grain of salt here). Two kids 6 and 8 yrs old that don't live with me. I'm so excited to get started.. Don't plan on retiring, ever. I'll probaby die with student loan debt but at least I'll die happy.

Hopefully I will get in this year, and that would make me 32 at matriculation. Married, plan to have kids during med school. Not sure how that will work exactly...I heard it's possible, and my husband is extremely supportive (read: will be working on his dissertation in a non-lucrative field, actually enjoys being unemployed and fantasizes about being a stay-at-home dad). 😍 my hero.

Bachelor's + Seven years in business + One year traveling + One year bumming = 31

Hey fellow non-trads! It's funny because I don't really think of myself as a non-trad...but I suppose I am! I still think I'm 21! Haaha! But I'm not...I'm 25. Took 2 yrs off after college and am in a Masters program right now. Good luck to everyone!

27 now. if allowed to defer matriculation to pursue wonderful research opportunity, i'll be 29 when start. no kids and single. know anybody who wants to date a [future] doc? lol!

Hi everyone! I'm new to the forum and am learning a lot from you guys. I'm going to be 33 next month, but I sure feel like I'm ten years younger than that. I'm hoping to apply to medical school next year. I would have applied this year, but I am having to finish my degree and do some damage control for the bad grades I made about 15 years ago.:scared: Good luck to everyone!🙂

23, second year PA student applying to med school, hoping for acceptance after graduation or the following year if need be

There are times when I feel like I'm 10,000 years older than sand.

In actuality I'm 31 and finally going to finish my Bachelors degree over the next 5 semesters at the University of Texas at Dallas (UTD). Then hopefully I'll be able to go Post-Bac at UTD with some financial aid and get into med school before 40. If I don't it won't be for a lack of doing.

Just my 1/4 pound.

Mr. Beef

I'm 40 and starting prerequisites this summer!

Decided to go back to school at 24...
Started the week after my 25th...
Graduated right before my 29th...
Will hopefully matriculate right after my 31st.

I am 29. Still need 2-3 semesters before med school.
Paramedic for 8 years
1 son. 7 months old.
Married.
1 dog.

:soexcited:

Thnx, girl! We have so much more to give after experiencing so much life.

Good luck to you too!

How are all of your spouses handling the decision to pursue medicine late in life or following a successful career?

37, wife, 2 kids, looking to start med school at 39.

Wife is very supportive, said she had been thinking for months how to tell me I should just do it, just go for it. I'd ask my kids, but they are only 2 and 3 years old.. I did ask my 3 year old, and he just asked if he could go with me on the bus to school.

PD

36, wife, 1 daughter (4 yr old), hoping to matriculate by 39....okay, I'll be 39 and 10 months, but at least I can say I started med school in my thirties! 😉

PDlaw and others,

What are you doing about the "glide year". Assuming we all finish our pre reqs and take the MCAT in April 2010, we'd still have to wait for the following year to start? Any better options out there?

Well I was told by the admissions advisor to use that time to take some additional courses to round out my pre-med prep, she suggested anything from higher leval science courses to some additional english course work to help get this old mind ready for med school, or beef up the clinical experience.

My self, I think, but am not sure as a lot can happen between now and then, I am also going to use that year to do some shadowing and to make as much money as possible before I stop practicing to start med school. I am also going to use that time to learn some areas of law that might be useful during med school that I can use in an emergency if I need to generate some cash, like wills, and real estate law so I can offer some easy non-court related services in a pinch.

I also am going to use that time to get into better physical shape so I can maintain the pace of med school.

I am 30, I'll be 31 in two weeks. I am married, no kids yet. I hope to enter medical school at 35.

36. I'll be 38 if/when I matriculate in the fall of 2009.

Also, does anyone else oscillate between total excitement and little moments of oh-my-god-what-am-I-doing?

Oh, only about 20-30 times a day. Don't worry you're not alone!🙂

I'm 29, 30 this summer... and I'm starting pre-reqs... Not sure if I'll go towards DO, PA, MD.... Just taking the road and taking the chance I really always wanted to take... I'll at least know I tried right? Single, female, So. Cal.. woohoo.

I think I already said my age a while ago here, but I'm currently the venerable age of 33 and am starting my second year of med school in September. 😳

My s.o. has been super supportive -- he's actually been a major motivating factor for me during the whole process! When I was waffling on which medically-related career I should pursue (I was considering stuff like Physician's Assistant, Physical Therapist, or maybe getting a master's in a medically-related subject so I could do research), I mentioned to him that I was having trouble choosing, and half-jokingly brought up that a bunch of my classmates at my CC were telling me to go to medical school. He said, "You should totally go to med school! You'd make such an awesome doctor!" 😍

We're living in separate cities right now (after living together for 6 years) so I can attend school and he can continue to run his business, but he's been a million percent awesome. I honestly think that things are better than they've ever been for us because we're both pursuing our dreams and supporting each other in those pursuits...

Evening All

25 years old here, so glad i've found this forum, now the only thing i regret is not finding this forum when i was 22 and managed to convince myself i was too old to start school again. However i'll be doing my A-Levels in Biology, Human Biology and Chemistry next term, can't wait to get myself into the mix so to speak 🙂

Ahh this thread makes me feel better!

30 - single, no kids.

ive never REALLY considered myself as a Non-Traditional applicant (and I still don't think I'm non-trad)...but I guess things just worked out the way they were supposed to and now I am 26 years old and applying to Med School. I should be 27 by the time I enter.
I am single, no kids but would like to own a dog someday 😳

Well I was planning on working for most of the year and then of course take a three month vacation to a couple places.

Hello. I'm 33 with a husband and 1 cat. I will be starting at LMU-DCOM in just a few short weeks! Yay! I'm so excited. Orientation starts 7/30. 🙂

I'm 33 and taking the MCAT on August 26. I've been a chiropractor for the last few years and really enjoy helping people and working with other healthcare providers. I just feel more and more limited with what I can do, so I'm looking at several DO schools. Married, 2 little ones, a dog, mortgage, etc. Wife has been a stay at home mom so she is struggling with this decision a little more than I am.

Starting MD in the fall. I am 33 yrs old, no kids or wife or husband or anything. My worry is how am I going to settle if I have not started my personal life. Does anyone else feel like that or just me. I am a scientist and post doc'd for almost 5 years. Post doc years are hard and then pre med crap and then med school. Am I crazy or is this a normal feeling?

Wow! You guys are making me feel so much better. I'm 30, and will probably be 34 before I even apply to med school.

I previously posted when I was 38. I have been 39 for few months now.

I am starting my post-bacc this fall. It will take me 4 years to repair my low GPA. Hopefully, I will be able to start med school in 2012. That would make me 43 when I start.

Yikes, don't do 4 years for that. Do the minimum to get your undergrad numbers over 3.0, and then do an SMP. If that's still 4 years, then yeah, it's a tie which to do. And make friends with DO.

Hi to all.

I am new here but just wanted to answer up too.

39, 5 kids and married for 11 years. I am currently in the construction business and own a small excavating business.

For years I have always thought, "wow, it would be so cool to be a doctor." I was always too embarrassed to ever tell anyone else but my wife. Now that I am about to turn 40 I thought, "you know, it doesn't really matter what anyone else thinks -- I am going to go for it and see where I end up!"

I am near Associates Degree credit so I have a little ways to go. I will stay at it and post my results.

I'm 45, applying this cycle. (Am I the oldest one here?)

We have a 50 year old matriculating in '08, sherruns. You're the oldest so far, that I know of, for '09.

I'm 42 - thanks for making me feel young today! Go get 'em.

Edit: and take a look at UNECOM's website. They have a 53 year old.

man.. with 100k/year for 10 years, you should pay cash for the tuition, and tip the lady in financial aid office😛

It doesn't go nearly as far as you think it would. 100k pre-tax gets a lot smaller after taxes and expenses. And that's 100k at the end of the career. You can bet that number was much lower at the beginning.
