Not Accepted Yet (NAY) thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Me (this cycle):
10 interviews
2 Rejections
8 waitlists

someone I know last cycle applied to only 10 schools, got 1 interview and was accepted.

...to anyone that says having a lot of interviews makes acceptances more probable...screw you.

One week left!!...until the waitlists start moving in earnest, that is.

Joining the club here, and just want to say good luck to everyone. 2 waitlists here out of 5 interviews. Time to go for a run and try not to think about it... :xf:

After sitting on 7 waitlists I finally got accepted this morning! Hang in there everyone!!!

I feel like waiting since September has just made me appreciate it that much more!

Nope, in the words of chastyre,

more thumb twiddling here!!!!

There's been significant movement at my school that I'm waitlisted at. One of the 2 of them anyhow. But its not got to me and I'm pessimistic.

The admissions director said if I stood a shot he expected late june or early july for a chance based on last year's trend. I guess I'll know in due time though they are already down to the middle 1/3. Just not the beginning of the lower half of that yet.

Yeeeeeah, some of my schools are having wl movement, which just makes me feel like my chances are shrinking more and more.

My WL school has no reported movement yet on SDN...

*knocks on wood so hard knuckles bleed*

I had 3 interviews, 2 waitlists. Both schools I am still in the running for have no reported movement yet.

Probably will call their offices tomorrow or Thursday to see if I have a realistic shot or at the very list if they expect the waitlists to start picking up speed.

Got in off of the wait list yesterday to my top choice.

And no, my intent on writing this update is not to distinguish myself from you guys, I really hope all of you waiting will get in. If I can offer some unsolicited advice, I would advise all of you to continue writing updates to the school - IMO persistence/enthusiasm at this point is key.

Good luck to all of you NAYers and hope to see you on the C/O 2015 page.

I feel like there's only so much I can possibly say. I work, I volunteer, I like your school for X and Y reasons, yadda yadda. Kinda hard to write more than one letter to a place.

I agree, so I haven't written any update letters or interest letters since my first one, but I'm trying to make a point to stay in touch with schools in some way (calling, etc.). Ultimately, a school is going to have to be truly interested in me for any of this showing interest stuff to matter to them, and that's impossible to predict (two of the schools put nearly everyone not accepted on the waitlist, it seems).

Anyway, still not accepted here and I'm gearing up to send in my next application. One of my waitlists has moved quite a bit, and I know my ranking on it, so I think I have a good shot, but we'll see. Good luck everyone, and congrats to those who have gotten in, that's awesome!

I sent a 2nd letter that basically:

1) Restated reasons I like school, expanded on them and related to own activities and interests

2) Gave updates about my hobbies, research, a presentation, and some random award.

None of those things alone would make a good letter, but the combination worked out alright. The letters were about 3 months apart.

There doesn't seem to be much waitlist movement right now. Let's hope this is the calm before the storm. Hope my fellow nayers are hanging in there.

Werms: The Bottom line is, if they want you, they'll take you, that's it. Last year I wrote many interest/intent letters to the school I got into this year, to no avail. This year, I didn't write squat and I got in. All in the game, yo.

Depends on the school. I believe most SUNYs, to my understanding, are those sort of schools that use ranked waitlists. Thus, such letters are only relevant pre-interview but not post interview.

On the other hand, schools that do use non ranked waitlists in fact encourage such letters and it helps in those situations to some degree. i've seen this hold true at UF before they converted to a ranked waitlist system. In the past they even used to encourage people to do such and to send activities updates and do more stuff to enhance their apps post interview. I've seen this true at other schools too that were non ranked in terms of waitlist. So I mean you do what you can and sometimes it helps, sometimes it doesn't but it all depends on the school.

I think people tend to overplay the effect of interest/update/intent letters. just my two cents.

I want to think that, but I don't seen any rainbows and puppies on the horizon, especially after I've been so thoroughly beaten by this process.

I don't know what I've done to deserve this. 🙁

I think it seems that way because it really depends on the school. Some are pretty receptive to student continual interest pre and post interview. Some just aren't. But it's hard to say exactly which schools it will work for and which it won't so since there's no harm in sending them anyway, people just write them up.

Accepted on Friday.

I only received 2 interviews this cycle. Both those interviews were considered 'late' (february/march-ish). Then, I got waitlisted at one school and had a decision pending at the other all the way until Friday. This was one of the most trying times of my life. I knew I had to be responsible and prepare for the worst i.e. reapplying, getting a job, etc.

In spite of that, I still fought to the very end. I wanted to finish the experience knowing I did everything in my power to try and get in. I sent in 2 updates to each school, a letter of intent to one school, and retrieved an additional letter of recommendation from a very close faculty member. I was aggressive- I called the admissions office consistently and even considered directly calling the dean of admissions for the schools prior to receiving my acceptance.

I guess I'll never know if it was my aggressive post-interview actions that got me in. But I am certain that if I didn't get in, I would have at least slept a little easier knowing I gave it my all.

I agree. I was extremely agressive with updates, letters of interest, a letter of intent and calling. I also had late interviews from a late application (sept/oct). I too have been preparing for the worst by getting my new application together and finding a job.

keep at it and dont give up! 🙂

anyone else still in the nay?

I'm still here...

Wait listed at two schools. My top choice has had much slower wait list movement than expected/previous years/explained to me by their dean :/ I have been pretty aggressive since my late interview: 3 update letters, 1 intent letter, 2 additional LOR's and many phone calls. Since this is an unranked wait list I am trying to do everything I can to be the next accepted.

Definitely feeling bummed at this point though. Somewhat hopeful about the next few months but solidifying my back up plans for the fall. I am really hoping to hear something, ANYTHING, before I submit my reapplication in June.

Goodbye NAY thread, and good luck to the rest of you.

thanks! haha unfortunately i think i could very very easily be identified if i said which school, since the wl movement seems virtually nonexistent. id rather keep my internet trolling persona separate from my real life trolling persona. im not sure a school would be thrilled to know wermz is comin their way haha. its a great school, i loved it during interview day, and im very lucky to have (barely) gotten in. so so happy 🙂

Just got accepted...finally after 4 waitlists and a grueling year! GOOD LUCK EVERYONE I'm rooting for you all!! :luck:

I've always wondered what people mean by making phone calls. I've sent update letters, a letter of intent, and a new LOR, but have no idea who I could call about it. Who are you calling? What are you saying?

I'm still around too. Sitting on 3 waitlists. Trying my best not to start losing hope. 🙂

I'm sitting on 2. One the likelyhood of any movement is slim to none (dream school too...darn you Duke!) The other just posted the waitlist today so who knows what the movement's going to be like. I'm a little peeved they left us until almost June to even tell us we're waitlisted. But c'est la vie. Working on my new AMCAS just in case....

I honestly wondered for a long time too and since no one answered the question for me, I just made up my own phone calls. For the schools I am wait listed at I call the director of admissions directly. If unable to get through, I try to leave a message with whomever answers the phone. I mention my name, that I am on their wait list, and that I am still extremely interested in attending their school. I also ask what the wait list movement has looked like, if ranked, where I am ranked/if it has changed, how much more movement is expected, etc. I talk about what I am currently doing (academically and clinically) and what I plan to do in the next few months. I remind them why I am interested in their schools, why I think I'm a great fit, etc. Talk about anything else that will convey your enthusiasm for their school.

Of course I'm not able to mention every single thing above in each phone call. A lot of it is a review of your application but calling admissions is a great way to remind them of your application and keep your name at the top of their minds. In a few of my phone calls I've been asked if there is anything that I would like to share with the admissions committee (be prepared for this--its a great way to sum about the important/best parts of your application and why you should be accepted). I've also been told that the fact that I called to demonstrate interest and sometimes details of my phone call will be forwarded to the committee...

Hope that's helpful.

have you been able to get through to the dean/director of admissions frequently? or do you usually talk to a secretary?

I have been able to get through to the director directly. I should mention that the schools I have been contacting are very receptive to this communication and obviously you should follow the guidelines or advice given to you by the schools you are interested in (phone vs. email, who in the office to direct your interest to, etc).

Goodbye fellow NAYers. I truly wish the best of luck to all of you. Stay persistent and strong and don't give up on your dreams!!!!!!

Yeah sadly at my 2 schools I don't think they would accept that kind of calling or that it would make a difference. But glad your schools did. 🙂

So ive graduated out of this thread. I GOT ACCEPTED TO WAYNE TODAY!!!
