Nova 2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
hey ziptree,
I thought you were gonna be part of us at UCLA?? I too paid a deposit to Nova back in Jan, until I received my UCLA acceptance. The decision was even harder when I received the call from UCSF, but I decided to stick w/ UCLA. The overall cost at Nova is a bit cheaper than LA, but you should also consider where you want to practice later on...let's not forget that factor as well... Good luck w/ your decision.

^^^^

Where you want to practice is a major factor. That is why i am leaning towards Nova being a Florida native. If you are going out of state i think Florida schools are the best place to be since i hear that the Florida boards are the hardest out there.

I know some fellow NYUCD's that took the FL board. I said "Man I heard that thing is killer...how did you pass?" Their reply "Its a big hype. I took the prep course and it was all I needed to know. It wasn't all that hard"

Heard the same from a UF grad...just take the prep course before and you will be fine!

Question for Andy....

First i wanted to thank you for answering all my questions last night. Right before i had to go i had one more that i think you didn't get. I wanted to know if there are and Nova dental students that have come from FSU? Thanks!

Hahah, well....I plan to practice in CA, but I want to live somewhere else other than CA. I've been here forever and would like to travel and live somewhere else for a few years just so I can get the feel for somewhere else (even though its still in the USA).

I too declined UCSF, but Nova seems like a very very nice school in a great location. There's more patients for you too see too, which is a big plus. I haven't sent in my deposit yet, but there's only a few days left until the remove my spot from the waiting list....so I have to make a decision fast. =(

Apartments in Westwood (around UCLA) are expensive. Another SDN'er came to check them out and said a nice apt. was ~ $2,100.00 a month for a 2 bedroom, so that's pricey.

JRogoff, have you decided yet?

^^^^^

I have decided ziptree, and its Nova for me! I'm a Florida native and want to practice here, so Nova just makes sense. Hopefully you will make your decision soon, deposits are due April 1. If you need some help deciding i'm here to help. Hopefully you will decide to attend Nova!

Now I see why Nova has a bad rep among dentist.

I was talking to a few more dentists after I decided to go to UPenn that I was thinking about going to Nova. They said I had to be crazy to go there and should have only considered that school if that was the only place I was accepted.

I heard this from not only dentists in my area but some on dentaltown also.

No wonder I know of a person that wants to transfer out of Nova.

^^ Quote from other thread.

Hm, I guess I made the right choice then. Hm...its still a very nice school, LOL.

I wouldn't make my decision on what one guy posts on SDN, but thats just me. I too have seen a couple of negative posts about Nova, we all have. But i did my own research found that most of what is said on SDN about Nova is just not true.

If Yah-e says the upper classman are having problems with patients, I do not know who else you could trust on here.

I can't wait for classes to start!

When are you guys moving down to Florida?

Hey I'm from Canada too (Toronto)!! I can't wait to move to Florida! I hear school starts at the beginning of August...that's really early. It's cool to hear that there's gonna be a few of us Canadians!

Just wanted to say hi to my future classmates. I just made my final decision today and am excited about it! Sending out the deposit tomorrow!

Hello future classmates,

I was browsing the posts and I found out that there are 8 people here on SDN going to Nova next year so far. Let me know if I have missed anyone for which I apologize. Please add yourself in the list.

Cant wait to meet you guys!

I got a letter in the mail saying that they will provide us with a laptop. It will be a part of your instruments fee.

I dont think so. At least I dont know of one

^^^^

Where you guys planning on living? I was looking at Poinciana Lakes, but Andy said its pretty hard to get in there. Maybe if i call early availability won't be a problem.

I was also wondering what kind of laptops we get. I don't really like the idea of the school picking it out, but oh well, we don't have a choice. I just hope its something nice and fast.

Does Nova give you an opportunity to buy your own computer from somewhere else?

No they don?t give that option. You have to purchase the laptop through them. After all they have to make some money out of this, right? I am also planning on living at Poinciana Lakes. However I am waiting for the housing package that will be sent to us at the beginning of April. At least that?s what Sue Ann told Jessica couple of weeks ago. After I see what Nova can offer me I will start looking for a roommate. I am planning on living with one more person and pay no more than $600/month on rent. If you guys have any other information please share it.

That's too bad we can't buy our own laptops. Anyone hear what color our scrubs will be?

^^^^^

I hear it might be the color the 4th year students have now, which is the traditional light green that most scrubs are.

NSU-CDM Class of 2008 Ladies and Gents:

1) collect teeth - more the better
2) your scrub color will be DARK FOREST GREEN (not green, not light green)
3) get your Nova email account (only works if you have already send in your deposite and the school has your info in our system)

https://www.nova.edu/sbin/account_request

4) do not purchase a laptop on your own. you all will get the same laptop which is budget into your financial aid

that's it for now

Quick question for Andy....

Dr. Littman was here at FSU this past week and told a pre-dent friend of mine something i found rather strange. She was telling me something about being placed in your class in the first week based on soap carvings? This really didn't make sense to me so i was wondering if you could shed some light on the subject. Thanks!

Hey All,

I think I'm living in Cedar Key. I mean, I hope I am living in Cedar Key. If we get off the waiting list.

If you want to leave near campus, I would suggest being proactive in your search and acting soon. Or else they'll fill up.

Jessica

Josh:

Here's what I think is going on. Started with my class (we were the first class), we had a summer project to was send to us via mail. Our project was soap carving. This soap carving project was the EXACT same thing as the Canadian DAT soap carving. As matter of fact, the soap carving kit was purchased from the Canadian DAT people.

We had a carve this soap thing and bring to class during the first week of school. This was done to illustrate what type of manual dexterity we had prior to matriculation. This exercise had nothing to do with your already possessed acceptance. The school simply wanted to see how you are with your hands.

Now, the Class of 2007, they didn't do it in the summer time like we did, instead, they did it after they were matriculated sometime in their first semester. Again, the same soap carving exercise.

Now, with you guys, the Class of 2008 (the 3rd year the school have done the soap carving exercise), I have no idea what's going on with the soap carving thing. You guys will still do it, but whether or not they place you in "categories" or "seats" based on your manual dexterity, that I have no clue! The school tries something new every year.

Most likely you'll receive some instructions in the mail in regards to this, but if not, you'll hear about during your first week of school. Nothing big so I wouldn't worry about it too much!

Cool? Good.

Also, it's Dr. Lippman, not Littman. Just FYI in case you ever write him.

That is what i thought, but i saw someone post on here "Littman" and i thought i was wrong. Thanks for clearing that up.

Also, thanks for clearing up the soap carving thing. You think i should buy a kit and practice or just wing it? Also, how do students get to go on recruiting trips? I thought it was pretty cool that Dr. Lippman had students here with him.

Thanks again Andy!

This is for all my future classmates....

You guys have to change your sigs! Be proud of where you're attending dental school and add Nova to your sig!

Look at mine...doesn't it look great?

Hey all you future/present Nova students,

I have a question about dental fraternities because I notice that dental schools seem to have dental fraternities. Are these for both guys and girls? Are they exclusive social groups? What do you have to do to be involved in the organization? Sounds intruiging.

Jessica

^^^^

Love the new sig Jessica!

Jessica:

At Nova here, we have two national dental fraternities:

Psi Omega (I'm part of)
Alpha Omega

You will find out more about both of these dental fraternities and which one suits you better once you start dental school. To join, you simply pay like $95 for the entire year for membership dues. The initiation process is simply an initiation dinner, no rituals or anything.

Since dental fraternities are considered as "professional" fraternities, it is co-ed and it is NOTHING like your usuall undergraduate fraternities and sororities.

Although most of its activities are geared towards social events, dental fraternities definitely possess other perks such as:

Community services
Academic tutoring
Alumni connections
Old exam files
Interactions with upper classmen
Meet other dental students in the same fraternity
Leadership opportunities

My opinion, getting involved in dental school is a great way to provide a balance between studies and extracurriculars which includes joining a dental fraternity. Great way to meet other dental students outside of your class. I highly recommend it!

BTW, we are "College of Dental Medicine" not "School of Dental Medicine". 😉

Josh:

DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT buy a soap carving kit to practice! Just hang in tight and you'll get your hands dirty in no time. In the mean time, if you wish to "feel" that you're involved in dentistry, I suggest two things (if you so desire):

1) continue to shadow a dentist - you'd be amazed how much a dentist will let you do and teach you now that you're an "accepted" dental student. Also, by doing this, you'll learn the dental langual which will come in handy when you start school.

2) purchase a set of 2004 Edition Dental Decks at:

www.dentaldecks.com

You can start to read some flashcards and since you'll be using the 2004 Edition Dental Decks for your NBDE Part 1 studies anyway, might as well get them now. I purchased a set prior to matriculation and I read the Dental Anatomy section and it was really cool to self-teach and learn about teeth. Again, only if you wish.

As far as Dr. Lippman bring student(s) to promote dentistry and recruit potential students, it's new to me, but what a great idea. A lot of the times, I'm sure Pre-dental students would like to hear from a current dental student about their experiences.

Alright boys and girls, I'm pumped to meet you all!

Thanks Yah-E,

You information is helpful as always. I might look more into fraternaties (and flash cards). Hope my signature is better now. 🙂

Got my webster account and E-mail all set up today!

Is anyone looking for a roommate? The guy i thought i was going to live with bailed to live with his parents, so i'm scrambling to find a roommate fast before all the good appts are taken. I was looking to live in Poinciana Lakes, right next to the HPD. Must be a male roommate, my girlfriend wouldn't like me living with another girl. Also must be clean! I will be in Ft. Lauderdale the first week of May to meet with any potential roommates if needed. Let me Know!

JRogoff,

Maybe you've already looked, but put a profile or do a search on on:

http://roommate.och101.com/nova/

I just found a girl roommate, but I have had at least three guys e-mail me looking for a roommate. Neat (as in cleanliness) ones.

Good luck,
Jessica

Hey all you people looking for a place to live at Nova,

I got this in an e-mail from a potential roommate:

Bob Hosea- Off-Campus Housing Coordinator
Tel (954) 262-7060
His job is to help us find a place off campus. He let me know that April 15th there is a Housing Fair on campus w/ about 25 places giving discounts and stuff. If you can, you should check that out.

Of course, that's pretty soon and might only help if you presently live in Florida. Hope that helps someone find a place. I can't wait to meet all of you in just a few months!

Jessica

Minh....

I looked at your profile and you said no pets. I have a little dog, about 20 pounds. If thats a problem let me know.

Have any of the Canadians going to Nova applied for loans yet? If so, how did you go about it? Hey lsurask, I'm also from Toronto. I went to U of T, where did you go? Anyways, I'm very excited to meet you all. I hope we can all be great ambassadors for Nova like Yah-E has been. Yah-E, thank you for all your help on SDN so far.

Hey guys, a Class of 2008 website is in the works! I am almost finished with the design of the site, so I will have a rough version up by tonight. Nova will be providing the server space, but until everything gets cleared, the site will be hosted by one of the free providers (please excuse the pop-up ads). Even better, does anyone have some host space that they are not using?

Chris

Ok, signed up with Geocities for now... Here's the address:

http://www.geocities.com/nsucdm2008

I'll be working on it so keep checking back daily...

If anyone has any free space with a host, let me know so we can get rid of ads on the site.

Chris

What little there is of the site looks great! Keep up the good work chris. The new sig looks good too.

Chris:

Great work with the website! I was the first to create a student website for our school, therefore, my class was the first class to have a class website. You wouldn't believe how useful the class web will be for you guys to share files and get info from.

Since you're doing a Geocite web site, it will take you a bit more work to maintain and keep up lets say than a Yahoo or MSN group website. I'm no web master, but to maintain a MSN and Yahoo group site is like "building a website for Dummies", it's easy and simple.

Regardless, your website will be better looking than ours. Remember to link our website to yours!

Andy

Great idea Suzuki. Keep the good work !!!
