Jessica:
At Nova here, we have two national dental fraternities:
Psi Omega (I'm part of)
Alpha Omega
You will find out more about both of these dental fraternities and which one suits you better once you start dental school. To join, you simply pay like $95 for the entire year for membership dues. The initiation process is simply an initiation dinner, no rituals or anything.
Since dental fraternities are considered as "professional" fraternities, it is co-ed and it is NOTHING like your usuall undergraduate fraternities and sororities.
Although most of its activities are geared towards social events, dental fraternities definitely possess other perks such as:
Community services
Academic tutoring
Alumni connections
Old exam files
Interactions with upper classmen
Meet other dental students in the same fraternity
Leadership opportunities
My opinion, getting involved in dental school is a great way to provide a balance between studies and extracurriculars which includes joining a dental fraternity. Great way to meet other dental students outside of your class. I highly recommend it!
BTW, we are "College of Dental Medicine" not "School of Dental Medicine".

Josh:
DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT buy a soap carving kit to practice! Just hang in tight and you'll get your hands dirty in no time. In the mean time, if you wish to "feel" that you're involved in dentistry, I suggest two things (if you so desire):
1) continue to shadow a dentist - you'd be amazed how much a dentist will let you do and teach you now that you're an "accepted" dental student. Also, by doing this, you'll learn the dental langual which will come in handy when you start school.
2) purchase a set of 2004 Edition Dental Decks at:
www.dentaldecks.com
You can start to read some flashcards and since you'll be using the 2004 Edition Dental Decks for your NBDE Part 1 studies anyway, might as well get them now. I purchased a set prior to matriculation and I read the Dental Anatomy section and it was really cool to self-teach and learn about teeth. Again, only if you wish.
As far as Dr. Lippman bring student(s) to promote dentistry and recruit potential students, it's new to me, but what a great idea. A lot of the times, I'm sure Pre-dental students would like to hear from a current dental student about their experiences.
Alright boys and girls, I'm pumped to meet you all!
