Is anyone taking their spouse, family, or signifcant other to the Sunday orientation on July 29th. What does that day consist of?
Looking forward to meeting everyone.

Is there anything Sunday, the 29th? I haven't heard a thing. If anyone knows about this clue me in.

My apologies. I meant Sunday, August 5th. Sorry.

Whats up everyone. Just wanted to welcome everyone from out of state to sunny (or should it be rainy south florida). We should all plan to do something to destress, before teh real stress begins. I live down in Miami and can tell you there is lots to do.....too much sometimes. Hope to hear from everyone soon...Ariel

Hey,

Who else is living in The Laurels of Jacaranda? I'm moving in on Sunday(or possibly late Sat.) and was just wondering who my neighbor/classmates would be. I might hit one of you up for a ride the first day of orientation because I have no idea where we are supposed to go. Hope everyone is having a good summer and see you soon,

Zach

Hi everyone!
I am with you, Ariel. We should plan something for this Fri or Sat night (the 27th, 28th). How about at Tarpon Bend or one of the places on Himarshee St? Is anyone up for that?

I'll be back from Michigan on Sat. night, so barring any plane delays, I would love to meet people out on the 28th...who else is up for that? Aaron.

I was recently at the bookstore and got a copy of our book list for first semester. Has anyone else received the list and know which books we should buy. I got the letter from the Public Health Club stating which books are highly recommended ( ie grant's dissector, Netters anatomy etc.), but does anyone know whether the biochem or histology books are needed? If you want I will post the books list.
Thanks

When I went to the bookstore two weeks ago two M2's recommended not to buy the Biochem book. I ended up buying the DiGiovanna book An Osteopathic Approach to Diagnosis and Treatment. They said that the other osteopathy book is required in class however they rarely used it.

Hey Everybody!

It would be so nice to get together with you guys before the big day, but unfortunately I was busy on the 15th and will be again on the 28th. How many people showed up on the 15th? Where is Himarshee Street? Any plans in the works for this weekend?

Beakerbetty,

I've been teaching biology and chemistry in Broward since 1997 - nice to know there's another one of us out there! Please tell me more about this uniform shop in Hialeah. Where is it or what is the name or phone number? The scrubs from the bookstore do fit funny and they are not 100% cotton - do you know if the ones in Hialeah are?

Tere is a uniform shop at the Pembroke Lakes Mall (Pines Blvd and Flamingo, about 15 min from Nova) but I wasn't too impressed. They were pretty expensive so I didn't even try on the scrubs. Maybe I'll go back and try them on.

Oxford,

Who did you get the book list from? I was there a couple of weeks ago and also wondered if I should get the biochem book and the medical genetics book. Could you post the book list, please,if you have time?

See you all soon,
Lauralyn

I am going to the store in Hialeah in about one hour. I will post details when I get back. The store in Pembroke Pines is a bit expensive and you are right not to impressive.

How was your teaching experience? Loved it or hated it. Mine was quite colorful. I taught three blocks away frim where Elian Gonzalez was staying. Need I say more? Very interesting place Little Havana.

Hi Kids!

I've just arrived in not-so-sunny Florida, and will be hanging around until school starts, and until we can move into our townhouse.

Anyway, Internet access is proving to be a bit of a challenge, so if there are any Studentdoctor.net social gatherings, could somebody give me a primitive "telephone call" to let me know? Thanks very much.

My cell phone number is 775-250-5147. It will be changing to a local number soon, but the new number will be automatically given out if you call the old one. Thanks!!!

Cheers,
-Fred

I just got back from buying my scrubs. I found a place in Hialeah (1001 West 49th Street in the Palm Springs Plaza, phone #305-823-4230 You can also get them online at www.lifeuniform.com.) about 30 minutes from school. The prices were quite reasonable compared to the other places I have been to. (the other places have been 1. Just Uniforms...we ordered our white coats there 2. A store in Westland Mall (Hialeah) 3. A store in Pembroke Lakes Mall (15-20 minutes from school).

Sale items were $17.99 & $19.99 per set. There were quite a variety of colors to choose from and they didn't fit as funny as the others that I have tried on. They were also pretty long considering I needed a small and they still managed to fit my 5'10" fame.

Hope this helps some of you. See you a week and happy shopping.

beakerbetty

:)

Thanks for the book list AJC - did you buy all of them? Have you heard any pros or cons regarding which of the Moore books to get, or which of the human anatomy texts?

Thank you Beakerbetty for the info on scrubs! My teaching experience was great. I'm sure I will miss it at times. I was in Plantation at a nice school - nice kids, nice administrators.

Thanks again,

Lauralyn :D

Hi all! I'm now down here living at Poinciana living with another Nova first year and we were wondering if any other first years want to get something going one of these nights. We really don't have much to do until next Monday so if you are interested in playing some cards or whatever there is to do around here, email me at [email protected] . Hope to see everyone at least by next week -

Brent

Don't let the Z-HUGE handle mislead you. Mr. Toney is actually just a Karch Kiraly wannabe with a very small penis. You better not be wearing any pink hats when you play volleyball there! Oh yeah, and he has Muppet sheets, FYI. Believe me, I've slept in them many times. ;)

What up B? I should know in a couple of weeks whether or not I passed Step 1, so if you want any discounted review books...

So as not to embarrass him, I should state that I was kidding on the first comment. He's actually built like a clydesdale. There you go man, now you'll be beating the ladies away.

J-no -
Oh, so the gloves come off! Well if it ever stops raining down here, maybe I can get some volleyball in! Even if it doesn't rain, the forecast ALWAYS calls for rain. Good to hear you got through the first step without any damage, although maybe the 'wife' could tell me differently. Tell her I said hello by the way. Keep me posted -

hi everyone,

at the end of morning lecture yesterday, Dr. Johnson informed all of us that he was giving y'all your very first lecture on August 6...have fun, Dr. J is a great guy you'll love him...as for the OB/GYN rotation @ BGMC...love would not be the appropriate word to describe this sweet torture

FYI,

Anyone that wants to avoid waiting for their decal during orientation week can get it now. Just go to the HPD building (reception area) with the two forms that you filled out and the receptionist will give it to you. If the person in charge of ID's is in you can also get your ID's as well.

See ya next Monday!
beakerbetty

So...I'm living with two other first years and (two of us are here, the other gets here tomorrow) and we don't know what there is to do around here. So, what someone needs to do (i would, but I have no idea where's fun) is take the initiative to decide on some place that we will all meet on friday night, because I am from missouri, its freakin' hot down here, and I want a beer. Oh, and it'd be cool to meet y'all before we HAVE to meet each other, too. See you ALL tomorrow!

Glad to see you made it to Florida. How was the trip? Is this your new number? If so, I will call you and give you mine once I finally get into my duplex. It reminds me a lot of your old place, only much cleaner and no cats. ;) Anyway, I move in August 1, so expect my call sometime soon after.

Find a waterpark and go there. My girlfriend and I are going to one tomorrow here in Dallas. If not, go to the everyone/lounge rooms and join in the fun. I have noticed you have still not ventured out of this thread.

alfonsito,

You need to go to South Beach. It is quite the cliche but you might as well check it out now that you are in town. It's not that far. If not check out Las Olas Blvd. There is always something happening there. So how is sunny (at least most of the time) treating you so far? I know it is hot, and the truth is that August is worst. But fall in SoFla is really nice because the rain subsides and then the tropical breezes kick in. You'll love it.

Hubby and I are available Saturday night. If anyone wants to get something going then...bring it on.

Oh, I almost forgot, -k and all the other out-of-towners...bienvenidos a South Florida!

Damaris

SocialistMD,

I will venture out...you're right, I haven't yet. Also, when you call me I'll give you my new cell. You can give it to your girlfriend too (does she check her school email?). Call me.

beakerbetty,
Its so freakin hot! I can't even tell you how hot I think it is. I spoke w/ KateWL and she has arranged for all of us to meet at Tarpon Bend on Saturday at 8:00. I'm bringing my roomates (both in our class) and it should be a good time! You and the hubby should definitely join. The address is 200 SW 2nd street. Hope to see you there!

Kate WL,

Thanx for taking initiative! See you tomorrow.

-K

Shalom..

Barring any plane delays, I'll see everyone at T.Bend around 10!! Save some beer for me!! Aaron.

Great to meet everyone at orientation today. I guess this thread will be slowing down now that school is underway. Lookin' forward to working and playing hard over the next semester (and 4+ years for that matter)!

Kate

Just keeping this thread alive. What does everyone think of the classes so far? Medical Informatics is my personal favorite.

Damaris,
We are all still waiting for that Spanish lesson.

-Ulyee

Well, I guess we can start with the basics.

The Spanish phrase for today is...

"Buenos dia(tarde) Senor/a _________, mi nombre es _____________; soy estudiante de medicina. En que le puedo ayudar?"

The translation is a little off but it conveys the introduction to the patient that Ginter expects us to use.

Good morningafternoon) Mr./Mrs. ____________. I'm student doctor ______________. What can I help you with today? (What brings you to the office today?)

Hope this helps!!

Check back with me tomorrow. If anyone is interested in learning something specific in Spanish, let me know in class.

Also, I have this good friend who is a doctor in the Dominican Republic. Apparently they are soooooo desperate for qualified physicians down there lately that medical school students are shadowing doctors and actually doing some really nitty gritty medical stuff. I don't know all of the logistics. But I will definitely find out. It seems like an awesome opportunity and an interesting way to get exposed to third world medicine while enjoying the sunny beaches of Punta Cana and the Romana. When I get the 411 I let you guys know.

Ciaocito,
Damaris

I will be interviewing at NOVA at the end of September and I wanted to know if NOVA students house interviewees? Is there a list of students who will put interviewees up for the night?
Thanks.

I know that our SOMA organization usually puts out a list of students that are willing to host interviewees. I remember getting this info in my invitation-to-interview packet last October. It's kinda early in the year, so I don't know when they'll have this info. You might want to call Fern at the admissions office (1-800-356-0026 x1101) and ask her.

If you have any questions about the school, feel free to e-mail me: [email protected]

Thanks for the response.

I also wanted to ask if anyone had any suggestions/tips when I interview with Dr. Terry. (I know not everyone will but I am prepairing.) :D

While Gator's asking interview questions...
I also will be interviewing at NOVA in the next couple of weeks and I am staying at the Rolling Hills Resort. Does anyone have any recommendations on how to get to the school (I don't want to rent a car unless I have to). Their shuttle to the school runs from 8-11am and my interview starts at 7:30am. Any suggestions? Thanks! I hope everyone is enjoying their first month of medical school (I hope to be in your place next year)! :)

PalCareGL,
Thanks for the response. I was thinking about just taking a cab. Are you going to stay in FL for a couple of days? I was thinking about coming early and looking around.

Hi,

Gator, to answer your question regarding Dr. Terry. He was the best interviewer out of the four in my room. The best advice I can give is know your motivations for applying to a DO school, and do not get upset by any of his questions. If he starts getting confrontational, and you do not show that you are upset, he will warm up to you. However, if you break apart after the first question than it will probably go downhill from there. Also, there is no set rule that you will get Dr. Terry as an interviewer. There are usually 2 interview groups, especially this early in the admissions cycle. Also, make sure you give them a good reason why you applied to both MD and DO schools if you did so. Just keep your calm and you'll be fine. (Oh, and if you are in Dr. Terry's group you will be asked one or two ethical dillemma situations. Just give your opinion, no matter what it is, for they will know if you are fudging it to look good)

PalCareGrl, the shuttle from Rolling Hills does in fact run from 8-11. However, when you check in tell them at the front desk that you are going to an interview, and the guy who drives the shuttle will definitely take you there earlier. If you would rather not deal with the shuttle, I can maybe give you a ride to school that morning. (Classes begin at 8am anyways).

As always guys, you can e-mail me with any questions. [email protected]

Guys,
I couldn't agree more with seth. I had Dr. Terry for my interview and he was my favorite interviewer of all in the room. Just be confident in your answers and don't lie under any circustances....honesty is seriously the best policy. Even if they ask you to answer a question that you don't wnat to, don't flinch or hesitate, just take it as they come. One of my friends interviewd at a school and he told me that the one of teh questions they asked his roomate was "How often do you masterbate?" This is just done to throuw you off, to see if they can jolt you a little bit (although I could never imagine the word masterbate come out of Dr. Terry's mouth). And about the ethical questions...if you've taken an ethics class before, you know that there is no right or wrong answer...that is the point of ethics...to be a big debate. Just answer intelligently from the head and you should be fine. They just want to know if you can THINK, and if you can rationalize a situation, rather than caring about the answer itself. Also, about the rolling hills resort, the shuttle guy will take you early if you just make arrangements the night before. Hope I helped some even though I kinda just repeated what seth said. you can email me too if you have any questions at [email protected]

Thanks for the great information. I was thinking about how I would respond to the question why I applied to both MD and DO schools. I just don't know how to phrase it exactly. Just wish me luck!

Gator,
I see that you are from texas. I know that they have their own app process for med school. If you only applied to med school in texas or near texas, then your answer is simple.

Just say that you always knew that you wanted to prcatice medicine, and although you prefer osteopathic medicene, you applied to those MD schools because they were located close to your family and friends. Tha was teh case with me. I am from ST. Louis, so I only applied to MD schools near my home, but I appled to DO schools across the country. So when they saw that, they never even bothered to ask me because I guess they thought it was obvious. But if they ask you that, that is a good way to answer it.
hope I helped some!

I am also interviewing at NOVA on 10.01. Are the details on the student-hosts (for staying over) included in the information packet that is sent? I have (a lot) family in Ft L/Davies/Pompano Area and I think I might make a mini-vaction out of this opportunity yet I dont want to lose the chance to meet and talk with MS1/2's....

-A

Amra- call the admissions office, they may have people... I walked over to the school on Sunday afternoon and there were lots of students around studying and they took time to answer questions and one even gave us (me and Johnny) a tour (thank you Yuli!). You can always go a day early to check out the school. The tour guides are more than willing to answer questions (who exactly are you Alberto?) and there were lots of students who stopped by admissions to say "hi" and wish us luck today (even though they had a biochem exam). There are plenty of opportunities to talk to students, so don't feel that you shouldnt' stay with your family if you are more comfortable there.

Thank you to everyone who helped us applicants today feel a little less stressed. (Dr Terry not being there helped). We all had a great experience, and I am seriously considering NOVA if I get accepted (even though I swore I would go to UNE as I am a New Englander). One question- did anyone apply to both UNECOM and NOVA and get into both? (Especially if you were from New England). Right now I'm torn between NOVA because I was SO impressed with the school and programs, and going back to NE to be near my family even though I don't think the program is as good. Any opinions would be great (even though I don't even have a decision to make yet).

Anyway, just wanted to say what a great school I think NOVA is. :) Maybe I will be seeing you all next year! :D

Thanks PCG for the help! I'll call them tomorrow to see if there is anything "offical" that can be arranged for the weekend.... If not, I'll just go over the campus and see what happens. :)

I'm flying in Saturday afternoon and staying until Tuesday. That leaves me enough time to have fun, see my family, and most importantly, get a feel for NOVA.

Thanks!

Amra-
Best of luck to you. Really just relax and be yourself, the interview is not that bad (for me it was actually good- they seemed impressed from the moment I walked in). If you have any weaknesses on grades or transcripts, be prepared to defend them (others in my interview group did) and also know why you applied DO and MD if you did both. Other than that, enjoy yourself and have fun in FL! I want to hear all about it when you get back! :)

I agree with everything PalCareGL said. The interview was very laid back. I also wanted to thank everyone who cam by to wish us luck. And thank you so much Seth you were a big help. :D
All the students at NOVA are so friendly and helpful. I really like the school and I hope I end up going there. :)

Hello everyone! I'm offically back from my vacation (err... NOVA interview)..

First, I'd like to say thanks to everyone that I bumped into (esp SethP). All the help was great!

Overall, the interview was very conversational. This being my first interview, I'd like to say to everyone that it's not as bad as you think it is going to be. The trick is to relax (as you've probally heard ad naseum).

One thing I didn't realize though to the extent I found while down there.... you guys have a real kick ass program down there...

-A

P.S. Anyone go to Round Up at all? :p

Hello,
To any current NOVA students- do you know if the admissions office has started sending out letters yet regarding the fate of our interviews? It's been three weeks and the committee said that we'd hear within a month, but Fern told us that we could call a person named Rogeria after two weeks and she would let us know what's going on. Should I call her?

Also, after four interviews, NOVA is my first choice, I am very impressed with the school. Are you students happy there? Is is a good atmosphere? Is the experience so far what you thought it would be? How is the weather (for anyone who is originally from a cooler climate)? Answers to any or all of these questions would be greatly appreciated, because I am looking forward to hearing from your school above all others. Thank you! :D

I'm in the same situation as PalCareGirl...if anyone hears anything, please let us know. I interviewed 2 weeks ago. Also, if any Nova students could answer those questions, that would help a lot.

Wondering the same... hoping my "acceptance candy" does get stale....

Just feeling the need to update our little page here. I figured things would slow down when school started, but jeez.
Good luck on the upcoming anatomy exam. And remember, "Don't cut the penis".
Man, just keeps getting funnier every time you here it, doesn't it?
Jamie
