So what is everyone doing for housing? I called the school and they said they aren't going to offer graduate on campus housing, which I guess is for the better...never really liked staying on campus, but it would have been nice not to have to worry about finding a place. Are most people married? families? Second career?

So with all those questions, here's a little about me. I'll be moving from CA, but I've lived all over the place, including England. I was in the Air Force for a few years and then a contractor for the Air Force. I'm 32 years old, single...well, I guess that's about it.
I am single and am planning on getting an apartment with a roomate, who better not decide to go to another school...We are looking at living pretty close to, but not on top of campus. I don't really know what is out there yet--but am going to be in FL in a few weeks and will be checking out apartments then. I asked a question about this in the NSU 2008 thread awhile back and they had a few ideas.

I am trying to figure out what I am going to do for housing as well. I'm moving down to Davie sometime before the summer and I am planning on buying a house or a condo. Wont be down to the area for good until mid-July because of a summer job in New Mexico.

Currently I'm in Gainesville, working for UF as a researcher. I am single, twenty four and have been out of school for the last three years. Whats everyone else doing for the summer? I am planning on working in conservation in northern New Mexico.

I'm just going to stay at my job as a test pilot until mid July or so, then packing up and driving out there.

Nice Job!

I will be working until the end of May as a bartender, then spending all of June at COT for the AF. I will probably come back from Al to IN to pack up, then go to FL second or so week of July.

90%, we're getting there. 10% more and I will shut up...o...maybe. 😉

I'm buying an apartment about 15 minutes away from school. I don't like to be right on top of school...driving is peaceful for me. I live in south Florida and I go to Davie on a regular basis because I have some undergradutae classes there now at Florida Atlantic University. Feel free to e-mail me at [email protected] with any questions on anything! Bye!

Hi kai,

would you mind giving us pointers later on after you have checked out the apts.

I'm also looking for an apt., single 26, from NY and works as a researcher at CU.

Just out of curiosity, are most of looking to share apts or prefer to have their own???

www.och101.com/nova and www.apartmentguide.com are good sites to go to to check out the apartments close to school and those futher away if you want to drive. Most of the apartment complexes also have their own sites that you can check out with links from those websites.

I'm planning on moving down to school in July sometime to get to know the area a little bit and enjoy some time on the beach before the start of school. I'm looking for a roommate through the och101 site. Just about found someone, just making sure we are compatible now though.

As to summer plans, I graduated college last month so I'm just going to be working as a CNA at a local hospital until it is time to pack up and head South.

Hey Everyone!!

My name is Marina Udowenko and I am going to be a first year at NOVA. I am looking for a someone to share an apartment with. I enjoy volunteer work--I am really excited about the community medicine opportunities abroad as well as being a spanish interpreter in a clinic. I am serious about my work, but I definately like to go out and have fun (dancing, swimming, running races, musicals, art museums). I am currently looking at housing in Cedar Key, but I am definately open to suggestions. I was thinking about coming down to Ft. Lauderdale in February to check out some of the places. Anyone want to join me--US3000 has some great deals for flights! Email me or give me a call at 215-266-3481.

ciao! 🙂

Sure...I'll let you know what I find. I am going to be most interested just to see what the area is like--I didn't really get a chance to see much of the Ft. Lauderdale area when I was down for my interview.

thanks kai...i may go there too later on but not till late march or april, if given a chance...

Just some housing advice for you future NSUCOMers.... 😛

I HATE dealing with traffic and University Drive is the WORST!!! Taking 30 minutes to go 3 miles is not my idea of fun! It also takes forever to get in to the parking garage from University. So that was a major decision in finding my apartment. If you want to walk to class every day, sure go for Cedar Key or Sunforest. I like to have my car on campus so I can get around for lunch and run errands after school. My apartment complex, Palm Trace Landings, is completely accessible on "back roads" with minimal traffic. Other great complexes by me are the ones on Nova Dr. like Nova Gardens. But I really like Palm Trace because it's brand new, has very nice amenities, and it VERY accessible to both school and 595. On the other side of University Dr., many students choose to live at Pine Island Ridge, which is also very nice.

Commuting from downtown Fort Lauderdale takes about 25-30 minutes, and is a really cool place to live! 😳

Just my $.02...good luck with finding a place!!! 😀

I highly doubt that if they wouldn't give him the info they would give it to you...

Can you buy where you are, or at any that you mentioned, and do any have garages?

Well, I live a couple of miles away and my commute takes me 12-15 minutes with the worst area being near 595. I avoid university as much as possible. I drive down pine island under 595 till 30th and take that to the garage. Its quick, simple, and fairly uneventful. Of course you can't move anywhere around 5ish cause the traffic is insane around some places. I jsut study during those times or leave eariler. Today i got out at 3...I went home and was in my apartment by 3:20 on the couch chilling. Its true there are some sucky days but you need to go and check out the apartments for yourself. I know I wasn't impressed with cedar key cause they knew they were walking distance and they knew they would fill the room so their service was take it or leave it to me.

(plus other complexes offered more amenities and at least a free months rent)

You know...its kinda funny. I have met the girl in charge of the interview day a few times. Mainly cause I have done the tours and went to eat the great food they have this year too. MMmmmmmmmm. I don't know if she was as friendly as Dr. Chaffin was to me last year though. He personally told me that he would call me on wednesday to let me know...it was late on wednesday and I called...he told me I got in...I was happy...I went and had a drink. Maybe they changed the way they do somethings or you got one of those people that answer the phone who arn't the most ...ummm....proactive.

Once they have gotten the letters together from the acceptance groups, they will tell you over the phone, but usually not before that. I called the friday after the adcom met (that monday), answered a verification question, and they told me. Just give them a few days to get their computer and paperwork in order. Hope that helps, also I would suggest that he call, not you.

They flat out refused to tell me anything over the phone. I would just wait for the cert mail.

I received an email...I'm sure they'll let you know that way. Waiting sucks...but chances are if you got an email and you're not a complete nut case you got in...Wait a second. We have some nut cases in our class so even if you are there's still a good chance you got in. Good luck. 🙂

I go away for one weekend and we fall off the front page...I'm disappointed.. 😱

Have you guys been reading the 08 page, they have scared the **** out of me. I just don't know who to trust....Ahhhhhhhh! :scared:

I can't say that it bothers me that much. I have always been the kind of person who feels guilty when I miss classes, so I don't expect the attendance policy to bother me. Regardless, I feel as if I have made an informed decision and taken all the factors into consideration.

Hey NSU gang-

I'm freeing up a seat today. I hope somebody here benefits. Another DO school makes more sense for my family situation (kiddo's public education and cost of living).

I wish NSU made more sense for me. It's a great school and the new rec center will be terrific.

Good luck all 🙂 👍

I interviewed at NSU 3 weeks ago and am wondering how/when I can expect to be contacted. They said the committee would meet like the 26th of January or somewhere around there, I can't remember. Doc 2B, has your brother heard yet?

No he hasn't magnum. I think that is just poor form, it shows flagerant disregard for a students aprehension. I can understand it takes time to send out the letters, but a week is more than enough and there is no reason they can't email.

What's up,

I am looking for a roomate for next year. If anyone is interested, pm me. Thanks!

Blake

Fred! What's going on? Are you local? I'm finished SB's Guide to COMLEX and need some input if you wouldn't mind... Also, are we still planning SB's Guide to Graduating?

Just a thanx to Stickboy for starting the guides, I just finished the guide for M1's and I'm ready and rearin to go. I actually highlighted parts of it so I would remember the specific info for when the time came. I also started collecting supplies from the hospital I work at, gloves for anatomy lab are on me! (I'll see how many boxes I can get away with before August)

Thank you Stickboy!

you'll prolly need around 2 boxes.

You can get cheap gloves at walgreens across the street from school or one of the many around the area. 2 boxes is fine and I bought the more expensive ones that have less in each box. I still had some for looking at brains in neuroanatomy too this semester.

I'm sure I'm missing something here, but is there a "check-list" that Stickyboy has out here? This is the perfect time for me to start buying supplies, while I have a job and an income, otherwise its just going to go to beer...which also is very important!

Here is the 1st and 2nd edition of Stckboy's Guide for Incoming M1's (uncensored editions) that has more information regarding what is recommended...

If anyone in the Class of 2008 is reading this AND would like to work on Stickboy's 4th edition, please contact me here or at sbrian-at-nova-dot-edu. Stickboy's Guide --- the legend lives on! 😉

Hey everyone!

I decided to attend NSU-COM as well and I just wanted to say hi to everyone! My name is Jackie and I'm currently finishing my bachelor's degree at Salisbury University. (For those of you who have never even heard of such a creature, it's a small state university in Salisbury, MD) I'm planning on moving in July to one of the apartment complexes close to campus (hopefully) and I'm dragging my cute little Salisbury LAX goalie boyfriend with me! All of the posts I have read so far have been very helpful and have made me even more confident that I have made the right choice. Can't wait to meet everyone in August!

Congrats!!!! Make sure you come down and/or get a place settled by July....the pickin's are a little slim then.

I've heard word that there's a new athletic facility being built. I didn't really get a tour of the place, but I've read where people weren't very happy with the gym on campus, but that a new one was being built. Anyone know the status *okay, I'm just stabbing at any old subject to keep our thread alive*

When is that thing supposed to be dun?

Alright, now I can officially say hello to all my new classmates. I made my decision, you can see my signature has change! See y'all in the fall.

Hey, do any of you have your scuba cert? I think I'm going to get mine, hell we're only going to be couple hrs from the keys. A friend that graduated 2 yrs ago, said I shouldn't go down without it, said that there is always a trip to the keys going on after exams in her class. Anyone else thinking the same?

I would if I could. I'm going to the keys this weekend (at the expense of the immuno test on Monday). Its about a 3 hour drive from here. It would take less but the roads are one lane and have a 45 MPH speed limit on them. Its always slow driving there. Its a great place for scuba though!

When are you guys heading down to find a place to live? Does the school have someone that can help out with this, like the housing office? Are you guy's going to set down with FinAId when you're down there? I'm thinking of going down during March, good time? Or too early?

Welcome to the dark side Doc...LOL sorry, but I just couldn't help myself. The SCUBA is a great idea. I think I can get my cert extra cheap on base before I head down there...I've always been wanting to do that. As far as getting a place to stay, I was thinking about making a trip down there in May time frame to secure a place for the beginning of July. Then I can move myself down there and have close to three weeks of just relaxin' in the sun!

I'm hoping to be down there in late May, June the latest. Basically cause class goes on til May 15th here. Otherwise I wouldve transferred my job and moved a while ago!
I started looking at apartments now online, and I'm thinking of headed down there to check out the area again in person this month too, not sure if that's jumping the gun at all though.

I would suggest to begin looking for a place ASAP. I live in Miami right now and I've already begun to look for a place and let me tell you its not that easy. Most places are full right now and will only put you on a wait list. Just a bit of advice because it would suck to be in may/june and not have a place yet. GOOD LUCK.. 👍

Does anyone know if NSU still offers it's own internet connection to students? I read about it in Stickboy's guide. The guide recommends using that and dropping whatever connection we use now. I have aol now and I would definitely drop it for something free, but I'm assuming that the NSU connection only has access numbers that are local to the school, so I wouldn't switch until I got to school anyhow, right?

Thanx and Happy St. Valentine's Day 😍

Maybe you're referring to NSU's campus-wide wifi network? I don't know of any free dial-up service.

You could definitely get by on using the school's computer labs, or going wireless if you have a laptop. You could save cash by not paying for internet connection at home (definitely a viable option), or just having NetZero at home for dial-up, Comcast broadband if you have to have hi speed.

From my experience, AOL doesn't provide anything that you can't get for less money from someone else.
