When are you guys heading down to find a place to live? [...] I'm thinking of going down during March, good time? Or too early?

You can always start apartment shopping online apartmentguide.com and rent.com are pretty good places to start. I made a trip with my future roommate last month down to apt shop and was really glad I had put in the time online before going.

If you want to actually sign a lease when you're down there, try to go sixty days before you want to move in (that's the notice the current renters have to give as to whether they will renew their lease). Good luck.

Yeah, what he said. He is right. 😉

It was very nice to have a good plan forumalted as to where all the apts were, what their price range was, and what order would me most efficient to see them in. I am glad that someone who was long on my trip down took the time to take care of all those details.

Happy Hunting!

Did you guys check out Palm Trace, it looked pretty cool. How far would the drive be with traffic, anyone know?

Palm Trace is worth looking into. I live at these apartments and I have to say they are the nicest apartments for the price (2 bedroom) in Davie. It takes me about 10-15 minutes to get to class. It is about 3 miles. Most importantly you don't have to get on University Dr.

Unless you really want to drive, my advice would be to go with one of the following complexes: Cedar Key, University Village, Poinciana Lakes, Sunforest, or Rolling Hills. All of these you can walk from, which IS EXTREMELY NICE. it's nice being able to walk home and eat lunch or go sleep, and it's nice not getting stuck in traffic on the way home during rush hour. IMO, it's worth paying a little more per month for the proximity.

Most of the time, you don't even have to pay "extra" to be in walking distance, but if you do this cost will pay for itself very quickly (save gas $, plus traffic can be a major hassle if you're stuck in it often).

I live at P. Lakes: http://www.gannonintl.com/Poincianalakes.htm

My place may be up for rent next year, but nothing's definite right now. There are about 25 HPD students living here, but that's a really rough estimate. There are different colored scrubs walking around here all the time.

NS

Which of the local (walking distance) apts has the nicest apts, and grounds? Are there alot of undergrads that live in them?

Hey guys, I just made my first offer to buy a condo near NSU today. They should let me know by tomorrow. Its pretty big and its about 2-3 blocks away from HPD so I really hope I get it... we'll see 👍

anyone want to get a two bedroom apartment...or know of someone else who's looking for a roommate?

Hello to all my new classmates. NSU 2009 baby....

👍

Oh, one thing...that just came up in a conversation with my roomie for next year.

To those who are looking for apartments, find what works for you. I personally like to have a pretty distinct separation from work and my pesonal life as well as enjoy driving as a form of therapy and winding down. We have significantly discussed this and would both dislike greatly the idea of "walking out my back door to class." We are purposly living a few more minutes away from campus in accorance with our personalities.

Find what works best for you.

Where can I get info on Rolling Hills? I'm narrowing my search down, but I can't find any info on them. Is this the place across from the Best Western? If not what are those?

WELCOME 2009er !! 👍

Can you answer my ?

Thanks, will call them tomorrow.

Yaaay! Saturday night and I cleaned my kitchen, now I'm sitting down to a little SDN. Maybe then I'll have a snack and go to bed. Aren't you excited to get to med school so your life can be as exciting as mine! :horns: :hardy:

Just kidding. If you saw my post in the Class of '08 thread, you know that last night more than made up for tonight. 😀

😎 👍 Welcome, welcome! You're (more often than not) gonna love this place. Life starts getting pretty stressful, but also infinitely more interesting and meaningful.

If you haven't already found a place to live, make sure to take a look at www.och101.com/nova/

I don't know what else to tell you...Everyone tried telling me to "enjoy life while I still could" but I was way too ready to leave Ohio far behind and get this show on the road.

If you've got the cash, you could do some travelling. I spent 6 months in Australia, so I could point you to a few "must-see" spots if you want. Just pm me.

Ok, time for that snack, then: 😴

NS

Hey

I had a question regarding finding roomates. I'm a guy who's looking to hopefully room with a fellow 1st year med student. I went on the www.och101.com/ site but didnt find much. It doesnt really give you the option of picking "osteopathic medicine/ or medicine" in the field category.

Anyway, if anyone knows of a good way to find a roomate or needs one PM me.
Thanks 👍

Look back thru the historic posts in this thread...I know I have seen several ppl broadcast the need for a roomate. I can't help you out; but I know there are several others in your situation. Good luck!

If nothing else, once you get your NSU email address, you'll be able to email all your classmates by sending a message to 1 address (that's a ListServe, FYI). I forget how soon that happens, but that's always a good way to find a roomie.

Most def try to contact other SDNners.

NS

Another thing you could do, that the class of 2008 did, before schools starts, is for everybody to give out their AIM, Yahoo, or MSN screen names for the different messenger programs. That way you could chat with your future classmates and get to know some of them, and possibly find a roommate that way.

Does anyone have any other info on scholarships other than Fastweb. I know there are more opportunities than what they come up with.

hello all.
im looking for a roomie, pm me if your interested

🙂

Hey everyone!

I know everyone has been posting their thoughts and opinions about the best way to go about searching for a place to live and also about some of the apartment complexes, but I noticed as I was trying to take in all of this that I had not seen anyone mention Davie Crossings. When I interviewed several students recommended the apartment complex and I wanted to know what everyone else thought of the property. Maybe some of you who have taken recent trips to scope out apartments could help me out??

Thanks so much!!

Hey guy's, does anyone know if there will be a book sale from the 07/08's. If not can we get something organized. I don't want to pay the bookstore used price.

this will be a great idea...

Hey ALL, I was just wondering if you guys have already paid the final deposit ($1250) that is due by March 15. I mean, I'm really trying hard to save up the money and I dont want to put it on my CC. Do you guys think an extension is out of the question (probably). But I guess there could be other worries...I just gotta skip happy hour from now till then 😱

I haven't paid it yet. I was planning on putting it on my CC, how do you do that? Can you do it through webstar. I would call the admissions office, but they haven't even gotten back to me for others reasons from two weeks ago, and they never answer the phone! The immunization form says that you have to have a titer for Varicella, do we have to have that if we have had chicken pox?

Hey would you mind telling me when we got the immunization form. I dont remember getting one in my admissions packet. So other than geting the deposits in before the deadline is there anything else we have to do secure our spot.. I'm just worried about missing something, thanks

I believe that this form as well as the white coat form, etc are all located in the Orientation section of the NSU website. I have not actually received these forms from the school, but that may come after the second deposit.

I remember getting a crapload of info after I paid my complete deposit. The current M1 and M2s always sell their books. You will get emails and fliers when you get here about people selling stuff. As far as books go, I really didnt buy all that many. Even the ones I bought, I usually bought a BRS rather than the actual text BUT I am not a book person. I bought a Rohens, got a free Netters (SOMA), split the cost of a anatomy lab manuel with my group, physio BRS, the CP book, and the CP survival guide (from a club), the biochem guide (from a club) and the histo cd (from a club). The First Aid for Step 1 is good to use in your classes during your first year and the for Step 2 is good to use during your second year. There are always required books but honestly, I didnt touch most of them and did very well, especially first year. For the most part, everything you need to know will be given to you as a handout. Also, all of the required text can be checked out of the library on reserve if you decide you need to read a chapter. I did buy the Foundations of OPP book which is huge and costly and I have used it once for one chapter - some people think all D.O.s should have this book but that is up to you. I also bought a histo atlas b/c it said it was required - I never opened it. My point is that unless you are a book person, dont buy every book listed. Use your money more wisely on review books and books that you will use for the boards so that when you study for the boards, you have already been through the book while you were in that class. Lately, I have also bought the Green Saverese OPP book and BRS Pharm cards to study for the boards - I wish that I had gotten these earlier to use throughout OPP. I did very well in pharm but it was so much so fast so I think the cards will help. A lot of people are also buying the micro cards. When you guys get here, we will have taken Step 1 so a lot of people will probably be selling these as well.

As far as apartments go, I would check out www.apartments.com - put in Davie and then click see all listings or put in the restrictions you want. If you hit, see all listings then SunForest, CedarKey, etc will be at the top. You can also click Search for Apartments in the upper left and then sort by zip code - 33314 (the school) - and then put in a radius. You can pick within 5 miles, 10 miles, or 20 miles. Good luck.

the orientation site, I have yet to look at it, would someone please give me the link.

Are there hard and fast deadlines for the medical and immuno stuff, like the deposit. I mean you wont lose your spot for not taking care of all of this by the due dates. Thanks all!!!

I paid with a credit card last year. In fact the only reason I own a credit card was to pay for my deposit. I believe I called it in to admissions.

[...] it says that we need to turn in the $1250 deposit along with the Immunization Form, Physical exam form, and transcript form by March 15th.

I spoke with Delia last week and she said to just make sure the deposit is in by March 15 (that's what changes your status in their system to confirmed class of 09). The rest of the requirements have a more absolute deadline of before orientation. I hope this helps.

Hi, does anyone who's been looking at the apartments, or already lives there, see Sunforest or Cedar Key as one being better than the other??? Also, my friends who lived in FL told me to definately be on the upper floors cause the bugs suck, are they joking or is it actually a problem with first floor apartments? Thanks

hey All...Hope everyone is doing good and as excited as I am to start Med School soon.

Has anyone else who is still finishing their degrees lost all motivation, and find yourselves wanting to pick up medically related books?

My goal is to really only pass at this point. I mean we can get straigh C's and have a 2.0 last semester and they wont care. Am I wrong to assume this?

Thanks

I don't know, but although in theory this sounds okay to me...I know that by the time the first day of class is over I will be back to my "Must do better" attitude and strive to do the best that I can. There is always giong to be some motivation...In high school it was college scholarships, in college it was med school admission, in med school it will be residency slots, etc...the path of achievement will never end. 🙂

Anyone take you up on that offer yet?

For anyone interested, Next year I will have a room for rent in a two bedroom apartment.

Rent: $600/month
Deposit: $600
Location: Less than one block to Medical school in University Village Complex (6-7 min walk)

You would have your own room in a 1400 sq. ft. split-level townhome. Also has 2.5 baths.

My girlfriend will be living there so I don't care if you are Male or Female.

I will be an M2 next year so I would prefer living with a medical student or any student in health professions atending NSU next year.

And let me just say that housing is very expensive around here and going up every year, so keep that in mind when you guys look for places to live.

Hey Guys,
I got the official acceptance letter from NSU this morning.

Thanks to Sharon Lee for answering all my questions.

And Kai has been anything but helpful to a fellow Hoosier and boilermaker throughout this interview process (Thanks a lot).

NSU was my top choice when i started this application process 4 months ago due to their reputation and impressive clinical facilities. But in the meantime I have interviewed at other DO schools and was really impressed by PCOM-Atlanta. It is a new school but the people who interviewed me were fantastic and I won't be suprised if PCOM-Atlanta becomes a reputated stand alone DO school like AZCOM in less than ten years due to their extremely friendly administrators. But being a new school , the system may have some bugs which the first batch may have to deal with.
I have heard that NSUCOM administrators are not very good dealing with students, but in their defense they don't have to prove anything because NSU already has a impressive match list which says it all.
I would like to make the final decision over this weekend so I can free up the seat at the other school (the one which I decide not to go) as their may be some other deserving students who are waiting for their chance to get accepted (I feel sorry for the guys who check the mail ten times a day so they can get some love from schools as I was in the same boat not too long ago)
I may email some of you if I have any specific questions.
I really liked NSU dean Dr. Shilvagni ( I would like to have moustache like him  )

😕 That appeared to be phrased like a compliment

So, PCOM-A or NSU-COM? Begin the Jeopardy music...

Trailblazers always have hell to pay. Of course they also have administrators that bend over backwards to please. I'd disagree that NSU admin has nothing to prove, not because of anything specific, but because there is always room for improvement.

Yeah, my answer isn't very definitive. I just want to start some dialogue with everyone who has some opinions on this.

Anyway - Cheers to those accepted to the class of 2009! Please fight the urge to pick up those medical books...put a margarita in your hand instead! There's plenty of time to get motivated, plus we're really eased into our studies for the first month or two.

If you're like me, you'll be shirtless and wasted until late September (uh oh, did I reveal my identity? ).

mandar, one thing I'll say is that you'll have amazingly wonderful classmates here...not to mention a class of 2nd years that will guide you through your first hellish year (top that, PCOM!).

Hello all.

Any thoughts on Sunforest Apts? I may not get a chance to check it out myself and hoping for those who have seen the place could give me some feedback.

I'll appreciate any input.

Hope to meet you all in Aug.

I am extremely excited about being accepted to NSUCOM! I live in Miami and didn't really pay much attention to it. But as I learned about their program and got to meet the students, staff and professors during the open house and the interview day, my attitude did a 180. And even more so after I went to other interviews and compared all the schools to NSUCOM...it just feels right 🙂
It is a great school and I can't wait to see all of you Ausgut 1st!!!

I will also be looking for an apartment...if anyone needs a roomate or knows about a place near school with cheap rent..pm me! 😛

Best of luck!

Hey Guys,
I have made up my mind and finally nail this down.

Notshorty and OmedDoc: thanks for the support

I am going to be at NSU this fall.

It was a pretty tough decision to decide between two good schools and I am sure lot of people on this forum went through the same experience.
What swing my decision in favor of NSU was the big school environment. I went to ug school which was big (around 40k students), took post Bacc. classes at a big school so i may be more comfortable at a big school.

Looking forward to seeing you all in fall.
