NSU-COM Class of 2010

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Facebook wont allow you to join a group from another school, so you are just going to have to wait until you port your facebook to nova..Or set up a new facebook account with the nova email

oh ok thanks . I shall wait then 🙂

Hey guys..for all of you that have not signed up for the listserv at nova.. Dr. Stanley Simpson sent out an email..

It prety much began congratulating us for making it to nova and that orientation information can be found at http://medicine.nova.edu/current_students.html

Then he mentioned something very interesting..i will copy/paste:
Beginning with the 2006-2007 academic year, M1 and M2 students will be assigned to one of 12 academic societies. The purpose of the societies will be to: 1) Enhance student-faculty interaction; 2) Enhance student-interaction, particularly across classes; 3) provide a sense of community for students and faculty; and 4) encourage the development of professional attitudes and behaviors among students. Each society will be composed of approximately 20 students per class, and 2 faculty society advisors. In order to assure that each society includes a diverse group of students, assignment to societies will be done randomly. Students remain in their designated academic society throughout their medical school experience. This creates a unique sense of community that students experience from their very first day in medical school. Each society organizes a program of peer advising, which is at the core of creating not only a four-year relationship between students but also between alumni of the society. Student-student and student-faculty interaction is fostered through academic/professional programs and social gatherings. We will be announcing a contest to name the societies in the interim in the beginning of February. The contest will be open to all students, faculty, and staff of the COM, so please start to think about relevant names for our academic societies.

This is something brand new!! gosh i hate being the first guinea pigs...hehe 🙂 Personally i think its a good idea in theory..we will see how it goes once we head off to school ..

Thanks for the heads up...I get more and more excited everytime I get something new from them! 😀

i wonder what kinda names they can have for these academic orgs... man i love naming stuff. i wanna name them after transformers.. but names like Devastator prolly dont appease a med school admin. fun.

I was accepted in December and have committed to going to NSU. I was just wondering does anyone know I can a nice cheap apt at in Ft. Lauderdale. I am willing to do the 30 min drive and all that is involved. Also Is any one interested in finding a room mate. I figure the only way to save a little money is to find a room mate. I graduated from the University of Oklahoma this past may. Any and all information would be appreciated.
Not going to find any "cheap" housing near campus. The cheapest one bedroom apt is cameron cove---right across the street from school. You can figure on paying about 1000 for a one bedroom, and several hundred more for each extra bedroom. The cost of living here is very HIGH but there is money in the budget for it.

Also, keep in mind that with traffic a 30 minute drive isn't that far out.

I wouldn't worry about noise, I haven't heard anyone who lives near campus have any major problems (if anyone on here knows differently--please correct me).

Nope! No noise here at Sunforest. A lot of my neighbors are grad students too..so there's no problem with noise... 🙂

I registered for facebook yesterday. You can find me as Angel Llanio at NSU-COM class of 2010. I also joined the Premed and Medical Students group that I found there. Feel free to add me to any groups.

They told us that at lunch after the interviews. They called them houses I think. The first thing I thought of was Harry Potter. Maybe during the white coat ceremony they'll put a magic talking stethoscope on us that will pick our house.

Hey everyone,

I'm Faraaz.. just got the acceptance phone call yesterday and I'm going to be joining you all in fall! I'm from the midwest, so moving do to south florida is definitely going to be a change!

I'm guessing we send our deposit in, then we officially get our NSU email account and webstar access set up?

For any current students, anything in particular I need to watch for when looking for places to rent? I know someone mentioned make sure you get the lease in writing ahead of time... any other advice we should know?

Thanks.

Where from the Midwest??
I'm a born and raised IN girl...there are a LOT of ppl in our class from the Midwest.

Go back and read this thread...there is quite a bit of advice from ppl on here about living. In a few words...think about how much driving you want to do--and if that isn't much, don't go to far from campus. After reading some of the other stuff, if you have specific questions--let me know.

Hi all,
I would like to know how I can establish residency in FL so that I can get the instate tuition (a difference of 7 to 8 G).

From what I understand, to do so, I have to purchase a condo or some sort and live there for a year? is this true? is this something that a lot of people do?

It seems to make sense that by purchasing a condo, I can save a lot of money in the long run. But then, how likely is it for a med student to be able to get a loan to purchase a 170,000G condo?

As you can tell, I know nothing about this business. So, any advice or feedback on this issue is appreciated. Thank you.

BTW, i'm from Houston, TX.

You would have to defer a year and become a resident. They will not change your status if you enter as out of state it remains that way for 4 years. They ask for extensive proof of residency. Part of which would be your transcripts and if you attended in Texas there is no way to be considered instate for this year.

Be sure to weigh all of your options. Look at each school closely. Here at NSU you'll be doing a lot of stuff other than learning how to be a doc. Like going on "com2serve" and IGC...etc. Sounds cool to go into the community and help others, until it falls on the weekend when you have a big physiology test on monday and you're supposed to act excited about culturing urethral discharge from a pissed off guy at a STD clinic when you should be studying renal phys. Nova isn't very respectful of your time. You end up taking a lot of bull**** classes (cultural awareness, medical jurisprudence, HIV seminar which really has nothing to do with HIV believe it or not..and medical ethics..which consists of an old guy telling war stories and has nothing to do with ethics) that have nothing to do with being a physician and you're required to be there or else they will fail you...it's like being forced to sit through an insurance seminar for no good reason..academics occasionally take a back seat here. Although we have a decent pass rate on the comlex...the bulk of those who pass score below the national average. At least that's the rumor. Don't hold me to it. The good thing is the rotations...very good rotations with only one real exception. You're clinicals are good..but heads up about year 1 and 2 😀

THX for your input:
im aware of the BS classes..ive seen the schedule ..and list of classes for M1 and M2's...and i plan to study or put on headphones during those BS classses...as for IGC..i think it just serves to sharpen my skillls in interacting with patients and i like the idea of early patient contact...But maybe your right..This is probably one of the few posts that actually sort of turn you off from NSU while giving evidence other than the dress code/attendance policy...Thx for the heads up tho and good luck on your boards..let us know how you did 🙂 And i also realize not every school is perfect..and there was a thread awhile back in the allo forum about BS classes..so obviously NSU isnt the only school with BS classses

does anyone know how the academic calendar goes for the fall? thanks 🙂

These are pdf's...if you have any trouble opening them..PM me..

Jasper,IN. We are right off of I-64 about 45 miles for Evansville.

Hey everyone I posted our class website before but it was the wrong address, here is the correct one.

http://www.nova.edu/com2009/

You can't get to much without a email and password, and I'm not sure if you actually have to be and M1 to access or not, you can try.

How is intramural program at NSU? Do the medical students have time to participate in sporting events?

It seems like we're gonna have class from 8-4 or 8-5 everyday, so, I guess weekends are the only time we have available for sporting activity.

i can access it..although there isnt much on that site..just some reviews and links to class roster/class representatives..

They're usually held after class.

Hi everyone, I found out last week that I was accepted to NOVA. So excited, because NOVA was my top choice.

I'm from New Jersey, graduated in 2004 from college. Kind of been doing my own thing since then. Very excited to be going to medical school, especially NOVA. I haven't received my packet in the mail yet, but they said it would take a couple weeks.

Can't wait to meet you all, looking forward to next year!!

hopefully mother nature will be kind to us

Wake up and smell the drop in barometric pressue...NSU was in Wilma's path but here in Palm Beach county ( 45 min. N of Nova) we have had 3 hurricanes w/in a year. Get used to the idea of having a little schedule interruption, and perhaps a week w/out electricity. It's all good...

I got in!!!!

After 3 years of applying to Med school, taking the MCAT 3 times, taking a medical mission trip to India, and after a tremendous amount of stress I finally got in somewhere!!! The longer it takes to get in, the more satisfying the acceptance. When Delia called I was screaming in her ear--i think she thought I was crazy or something. Man I'm so excited and pumped to get started.

Way to go!!! When you get your Nova email set up a facebook account. 👍 😀

congrats smaroof! yea i know it is a bitch to have to regroup and suck it in and take the MCAT over again... i admire your perserverance.

On another note, lookin at a question in the pre-do forum, I want to ask any current student roaming here, are laptops neccessary? If i remember right, nova doesn't require them. I'm still pretty sure I'll get one, but do people normally bring them to class, or are they pretty much just to entertain you when you get bored in lecture?

I have put my name on the waitlist for palm trace landings..which is just a mile or 2 away from school..and have been recommended by many SDNers..I am looking for a roommate so if you are interested..PM me...

www.archstoneapartments.com

search under southeast FL...palm trace landings...

its kind of pricey (so is everything) but the location is great (close to grocery store restaurants and major highway etc)...and im looking at either a 2/2 or a 3/2 ...3/2 is more affordable

btw..i dont smoke or have pets..and i prefer the same in a roommate

Has anyone applied for loans yet?

the school automatically sets u up with sallie mae, but i've heard that a lot of people prefer Access Group. Anyone?

Last time I checked access group wouldn't let you defer while in residency...but sallie may did. just something you might want to consider

oh i see yea. in that case then Sallie Mae is the one I'll choose. So once i do the FASFA online, will NSU contact me with the pre-approved loan or do i have to apply at salliemae.com

To be quite honest... I cant remember. But im sure if you call them and ask them theyll be more than happy to help you out. I think they automatically do it through sallie mae, and then if you want to take out private loans, you could do so through sallie mae, access group...etc..
