NSU-COM Discussion thread 2008-2009

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I like how the NSU boards are dominated by about 3/4ths of the 9/11 interviewee crowd.

I bet we'll be in the same group thing once we get there as well. We gotta think of sweet colors and an awesome shield design now.

hehe. Your "sweet colors and awesome sheilds" come with the society you're assigned to 🙂

You may laugh, but SDN is a GREAT way to meet your future classmates. I "met" several people in my class through this site way before school even started. One of them has turned out to be my closest friend here.

It's very cool that you guys all got to meet on your interview day, I wish you all the absolute best of luck. I wish I could have stopped and said hi to one of the tours but Alison (one of the guides that some of you may have been lucky enough to have) was just getting her tour underway while I was on my way up to the anatomy lab (oh what fun!) So neither of us had time to stop.

Anyway, back to the nerve supply of the upper extremity for me! 👍

.Oh, and I love when he was all sketchy about standing in front of the door. I had to focus pretty hard to not smile/laugh during his entire shpiel.

He did the same thing on the 9th. Me thinks that's a part of his routine.😀

Dang it.. Cliques already forming even before acceptances. Should have pushed back my date by two days. Don't think anyone from my day was an active sdn poster.

Yea. Thats how it works. I didn't realize it was as many as it was. Of course, most aren't quite the addict I am. I kind of feel like I know some of these people better than people I encounter in daily life.

Yeah, I don't post alot, but I read on sdn all the time. I felt like I was meeting a celebrity when I realized who you were.

When you log in, go to webstar, go to admissions, log in, click on the application under admission term and then in the bottom right hand corner of the page that says admissions summary there is a box that says "status"

Thanks.

I feel like I'm cool all of a sudden. I always felt like the annoying kid that posted a lot but wasn't on the same level as some of the others. 😉

If any of you guys ever want to im me, my SN is the same as my name on here. Just mention who you are so I'm not confused!

Yea. I was disappointed I didn't get to see the anatomy lab. I understand the rules and what not, but that is my biggest problem so far. I just don't feel like I saw much besides hallways. I do not blame the tour guides for that at all, but it would've been nice to sit in on a lecture or something!

Unfortunately, the interview tours do not allow one to visit lectures. If you want to come another time, I'm sure one of your peers would be happy to let you sit in on their lecture. i did that two years ago in January and got to sit in an M1 and M2 class. A good experience.

If accepted, I'll probably do a second look. I need to go down to south florida at least once more this semester anyway.

Heh. i was upset that I didn't get to see the anatomy lab on my tour...now, i can't imagine the thought that I would WANT to spend another SECOND in there (good God, I feel like, everything I own smells like formalin). Actually, the smell isn't that bad our lab is pretty well ventilated.

If you get accepted to NSU and still want to check out a class, shoot me a PM. I'm sure I have to get it approved with somebody, somewhere, but if that's something they'll allow I'll happily bring you to class with me one day 🙂

We have some really fantastic lecturers.

Hey everyone,

I was one of the tour guides (for better or for worse, I suppose) on the 9/11 interview tour. I wanted to make sure that you knew I was around to answer questions via email or SDN. I hope you had a great interview day, and please feel free to harass me with questions (which I will take the time to answer after I take my anatomy exam in... ****, 8.5 hours).

Welcome to the party. The 9/11 crowd better all get accepted because we're all pretty frickin awesome. After meeting all those people I begin to understand the difficulty that adcoms have in making decisions. Good luck on the exam.

sing,
Thanks for the offer by the way. I just may end up taking it. All this traveling is beginning to seem like nothing so far!

For some reason ALL my interviews (save NSU) were in January last year. Several in the same week. you have NO idea of the "suck" that is WVSOM on monday, Touro CA on tuesday, Tour NY on wednesday (don't these people talk to eachother???) and LECOM-E on ...I think Thursday.

I kind of wanted to kill myself by that point. By the time I got to...I guess the 3rd interview in that series i was like "jesus christ, I don't even care if anyone lets me in, just let the questions STOP"

Just let me know if you (or any of you for that matter) want to come in and take a look at one of our classes. I'll figure out how(if I can) to make that happen for you.

I'm surprised too. When i went to an Open House at another school, I got to see the anatomy lab, complete with desks full of open cadavers.

I have my interview tomm and I think im going to die. I feel like a nervous wreck but anyway, is anyone else out there having theres tomm too?

Perhaps it's a FL anatomical board stipulation?

I am pretty sure it is a Florida law. I just got back from Touro-CA and they had no problem with it.

Yea...these interviews are griding on me. I had Nova on a Thursday. Came back to Tally for Friday classes. Then flew out to San Francisco for Touro. Monday I hauled to the airport and then had my flight delayed 3 hours. So I went from SF-> LA -> Miami -> Cancelled flight to Tally -> Tampa -> Tally. (Still in tampa.)

This Thursday I drive down to bradenton. PCOM-GA scheduled the day after Kirksville, which I don't even think will be physically possible for me!

How long did they tell you guys it would take to hear back from them? When I was there I heard 1-2 weeks and about a month...

It depends if your application package is complete, and when the adcom meets. After the adcom decides, the Dean has to approve of all the acceptances and sign off on them. Soon thereafter, you would get a phone call from Rachel letting you know of your acceptance. If your application is not reviewed that week, it will be another week or two before it will be reviewed. They can also, hold your application to review at a later point in time.

So, it can be a few days to a couple of weeks, this early in the season.

Hello everyone!~ a couple questions...

1. When filling out the secondary, should you include a brief description of the healthcare experience you are listing?

2. Will NSU grant interviews without the physician letter? I will def. have one from the MD I do research with buttttttt not for like a week or 2 🙁

Thanksss so much everyone! (I tried calling/emailing the admissions office and havent heard back from them)

Have any of you actually been able to see your secondary after you submitted it? I got an email from them with the secondary as a PDF, but i was not able to open it.. i dont even know what i wrote in the secondary.. i know i copied/pasted a lot of it from my AACOMAS application.

The email should tell you to email them if you have trouble opening it. I did that and was emailed a working copy.

Tourniquet, I had the same problem with the PDF. I responded to the e-mail address that sent me the file almost two weeks ago now and haven't gotten a response. Does anyone else feel like Nova is just a little bit disorganized? 😕

Never send an email once and assume the person got it. If you don't get a response within 24 hours you send them another, very politely of course. It is not always disorganization. These people are dealing with hundreds of contacts a day, it is easy to miss something.

yes i did that, and called them.. but to no avail... i dont know if its worth bothering the woman with whom i scheduled my interview. I'll definitely bring my aacomas application with me... to those who have interviewed: should i bring anything else???? thanks!

I wouldn't even take that. Just take a pen. They even provide the binder/notepad.

I refer you to:

3) If this year is anything like last year...you will all be wondering if you REALLY want to goto NSU because the admissions office will drive you nucking futs! Just remember, its ONE department in the school. The teachers, for the most part, are amazing! Nearly everyone here is very supportive of the students, and will really work with you! Also...anytime someone tells you something is required...check with an upperclassman...preferably HemaOncoDoc...Also...they will lose things, and they will NOT contact you!! Continually check on your application status! You'll have to do this with your financial aid as well! There were a number of people who were missing items from their file and didn't find out until orientation, and we have students who STILL don't have their financial aid. If you stay on top of things, this will not be you! Call...and then call again...

Truer words were never spoken....er...typed.
Also, it's not always disorganization either. There are A LOT of you guys you know! Sometimes things just get backed up.

I think with a class as large as NSU, many of those things are inevitable. It looks like they have a normal sized office for about twice the amount of people.

Thanks for the feedback singinfifi and Mosspoh!

Do you think it would be ok to call the office and ask for my application status? I think I remember reading somewhere on Webstar that any calls to the office will be directed to the website, or something to that extent.

They told my group to just check webstar because that is the first thing that is updated when a decision is made.

can anyone confirm if NOVA screens scores lower than a 7 on a MCAT subset score? I tried to call their office and emailed them, but i got no response, adn it's been three days. any help? thank you!!

Keep trying to contact them. That is something I'd want from the horse's mouth

Unfortunately, I have a 6 on the PS section :-( But I just received and completed my secondary from NSU on Monday. 🙂 Hope that helps.

hello

I received a secondary as well. They don't screen b4 sending secondaries, but if they screen after they receive the secondary based on MCAT score, then it's a waste of money to even do the secondary in the first place. that's why i keep calling, but they don't respond to my emails or phone calls. it makes me reconsider why i'm applying there in the first place. other schools are very good about returning emails or at least picking up their phone...

You can find at least one person with nearly EVERY school that has this problem. I had it with DMU. Another had it with UMDNJ. Another with OUCOM. The list goes on. Don't let that be what dissuades you. I personally had a good experience with all communications and had my emails answered within 30 minutes usually. The lady that works there and notifies you of an interview just started working there not too long ago, so I'm sure she is a bit overloaded now.

hey mosspoh

thanks for the reply. i'll keep trying but if anyone knows or can confirm the MCAT subset score screen, then it would make my life a lil easier. thank you!

If you feel like your experience is relevant, sure, include it. Don't be verbose though.

NSUCOM does grant interviews without a LOR from a physician. They adcom will not review your file until you have a complete application package, post interview.

Individuals have been accepted with a 6 in one of the MCAT sections.

If I sent in my signature page on Sept. 8th, when should I expect to hear that they received it? I keep checking the portal and it shows nothing. Also when should I expect to hear about a possible interview offer?

You'll get an email saying they received it. It took about 3 days for me...

I already interviewed but am having trouble checking my status on webstar, where do I go once I login to check status, am I on the correct place on webstar? Please let me know, and thanks ahead of time.

I forgot to mention that my committee letter won't be sent out for another week or two. And since the committee will send out their letter as well as the other LORs, I was wondering will NSU-COM evaluate me before they receive my LORs?

once you go to webstar and log in to your page under admissions you should scroll down to where it says admissions term and then click on the one that says "Fall 2009". At the bottom right hand of you screen it will show a little box that says status.

I honestly don't know. They seem to wait though. NSU is one of those schools that truly does look at the whole applicant, and letters are a nice chunk of that. Either way, go PSU.

thanks schussboarder, I jus checked it, haha the box is completely blank so I am assuming no decision as of yet

This wait is killer eh

On the secondary, did people really list every school they've applied to in previous cycles? My issue is that while I'm a new DO applicant, I applied to, ahem, 25 MD schools last cycle and it's really quite embarrassing to have to list them all. Especially the ones I had to re-apply to. Will they notice or care if I leave some off, especially those that didn't interview me and never even officially rejected me (coughJeffersoncough)?

Oh, and I can't get a straight answer from them about requiring a DO letter. Half their website says yes, the other part says no, AACOMAS says no, etc. My emails/phonecalls have yet to be acknowledged.
