NSU-COM Discussion Thread 2010-2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
The general consensus is that the residency forms are for Florida residents to prove their status. If you aren't a Florida resident (which it looks like you aren't?) you wouldn't need to do these.

I was actually concerned about when the papers were due (I'm a resident), there's some vague statement that says you have 30 days after you send some paper in to file for residency status or you don't get the tuition cut. I'm assuming that's the initial deposit.

Woops! Excuse me. I simply assumed based on your location that you weren't, but should probably remind myself that just because I'm a (soon to be ex-)townie doesn't mean other people are too. A lot of the due dates, like you said, seem to be hidden behind vague statements about relative numbers of days and it is mighty confusing. Sorry for being zero help!

NP, the location is misleading because I'm up here finishing school 🙂 I'll just go ahead and submit all the paperwork anyway.... was a pain to get it together.

Bueno,

Has everyone that interviewed produced thank you e-mails to the interviewers and the director of admissions? Clearly, it was a pretty big hint that they gave us all the contact information. I just feel that there wasn't an opportunity to connect with the interviewers like I did at other schools, and it is not me to write about something unless I truly mean it. I just feel like writing a letter to the director of admissions to thank her for the fun experience. Any comments?

Further, does everyone agree that sending thank you letters within one week is reasonable? I've been working in the hospital everyday since I have returned (which is still a poor excuse). Last night it felt like -5 degrees Fahrenheit here. WOOF! 😛

Best regards,
Boshkosh26

I didn't and was accepted anyway. Shrug.

Hi everyone!

I have an interview at NOVA next week and this is my first interview...yikes! Needless to say I am so nervous because I have no idea what to expect... can anyone who has interviewed at NOVA please please give some feedback? I would greatly appreciate it!

Thank you!! 😀 😀

For those who are deciding to live on campus, are you having a hard time deciding between the Culture Living Center (CLC) or rolling hills? I know a little of the pros and cons but maybe someone else might know a little more. CLC has separate living room and bedroom, while RH is a studio. RH has the pool and also sets up floors with people in the same scholastic program. I dont know i guess im having a hard time making a decision and want to see if anyone knows more.

are we supposed to be making this decision soon? do you have any information/links about on campus living?

Thank you!! I actually felt a lot better after looking at the stats from that survery = )

Im an M1 living at rolling hills if anyone has any questions 😉

Is it cheaper or more expensive than renting an apartment and sharing it with someone? How long does it take to walk/drive to school from door-to-door? What are the pro/cons of living at rolling hills

NSU says they haven't received my deposit yet and the deadline is Saturday (15th). I sent it by US Mail over a week ago. I guess I have to duplicate pay over the internet and request a refund, how annoying =(

Can any students who received an interview please share their MCAT score.
Thank you in advance!

I interviewed on 01/04/2010. My composite MCAT score was >10 😛. Message me if you would like, and I will share my stats!

Has anyone heard of recent interview invitations being handed out so far this month?

I called a couple days ago and was told that I should be receiving the invitation e-mail at some point within this month or next month's handouts because they were only done once a month. Anybody else get any sort of lovely news lately?

Accepted this morning!
Interview invite 12/7/10
Interview 1/7/11 (Medical School Experience Program)

Congrats Yanks!

I was also accepted this morning and attended the Medical School Experience Day 1/7/11.

Maybe I'll see some of you next fall...

Invited for interview early Dec

Medical School Experience Program 1/7

Accepted 1/14

i really liked the school so i am going to go here. i am withdrawing my interviews at other schools on monday so hopefully other people can get a chance at those spots

HOw did you guys find out about your acceptance? I interviewed 1/6

Congrats to those of you who just received acceptances!!

I interviewed on 1/6 (not the med school experience interview) and still have not heard.

From what I have learned, those who attend the med school experience day are essentially automatically accepted if they attend (after all, you guys didn't even have a formal interview). So, I believe they notified you guys earlier because there was no real decision or review to be made (they had essentially already decided to accept you when they invited you for the med school experience).

I called yesterday to find out when those of us who attended the standard interview on the 6th would find out regarding acceptance. Ellen told me that sometime next week (not Monday since they are closed this monday), decisions would be made and posted on webstar.

So, again congrats to those of you already accepted from the med school experience, and for the rest of us, we will find out this coming week. Good luck to us!!

can someone post the number for admissions. Thanks

What numbers are u asking for? The GPA/MCAT of those accepted?
If so, then you can be sure that you will get many different answers but Im certain the vast majority of those accepted will have MCAT scores in the range of 25-31 and GPA's from 3.3-3.8

no looking for the phone number to call the admissions office to see where my application stands

no looking for the phone number to call the admissions office to see where my application stands

Hey Biochem they actually included the phone number you are seeking within the first e-mail they probably sent you. The e-mail they sent me upon receiving my AACOMAS application contained the following statement:

"Please feel free to contact the Health Professions Division (HPD) Office of Admissions at 1-866-817-4068, if you have any questions."

Warmest regards,
Boshkosh

Hey guys, I was just wondering if NSUCOM offers scholarships. I would love to attend here, but the out of state tuition is quite hefty, and was wondering if there was any way to cut it down. Thanks!

Hey guys. So I am going to attend in the fall but I had a few questions.
Did you guys send the technical standards certificate to the same address as the final transcripts office?
How long after you paid the deposit did you get an email regarding the next steps (webstar/sharklink?)
And for financial aid what do most students have for NSU?
Whats everyone doing for housing?
Lastly, should I become a miami heat fan?

Thanks!

While I'm not sure about scholarships, they do offer a pre-clinical fellowship in OMM that you do for a year between your normal 2nd and 3rd years. In return for you doing that and helping out in the OMM labs, they pay for your third and fourth years. Of course, your savings aren't equivalent to that missed year of attending salary, so it doesn't ultimately work out in your favor financially, it's an option if you want to learn a little extra and are terrified of $300,000+ in debt. I thought they may have mentioned another pre-clinical fellowship, but I can't say for sure.

if you find a research fellowship between your second and third year, the tuition for third and fourth year is still paid. So, it is not necessarily just omt fellowship. good luck and if you have questions message me

Does anyone know about the Class of 2015 group that Ellen's email talked about after you put down the deposit. Apparently you can access it in Webstar somewhere but I'm quite lost.

I have a question about being notified after the interview.

I interviewed on Jan 6th and our group was told that the committee would meet on the 13th (which was this past Thursday).

When I log on to Webstar, it doesn't give me any updated information regarding whether I was accepted, waitlisted, etc.

Since the committee met last week, they must have made a decision already so why is there no update yet? Is this normal?

I dont think that it is set up yet. I believe it will be in sharklink not webstar. You have to go to your sharklink profile, then click the groups button on the top of the page, then the groups index tab, then click the arrow by the academic file and you will find osteopathic medicine. However you will see that there is no class of 2015 yet. I found this through extensive exploring of the nsu website. 🙂

So has anyone who interviewed in the last few weeks received a decision?

I know the committee met last week, but still no word from them and nothing noted on webstar...

Is anyone aware if NSU allows you to defer acceptance for a year? I'm slightly interested in finishing my masters and want to make sure its an option.

The committee likely has more work to do than they can get done in a single session. I know that in my case I was lucky and they got back to me a lot faster than they thought they would, but that opens up the possibility that they could do things a lot slower as well. Take it easy, Nova accepts a large portion of the applicants they interview. Your chances are still good but remember: patience is a virtue.

Hey everyone, I am a current M1 and can answer any questions if you have them; just send me a personal message. I know the waiting for interviews and decisions blows, but just keep your hopes up. I briefly saw some questions thrown out there and I will quickly spit some answers out:

Housing - i would live off campus as there are lots of options within walking/biking distance. i live across the street and i drive as i am lazy, it would be a ten min walk from door to door. If you are applying for on campus housing you need to do it early as there are multiple grad programs at NOVA and the spaces fill fast. This year a few students were shifted over to the undergrad housing as they applied late and everything was full. Rolling hills is nice and in terms of cost, unless you live in a quad you will be able to find cheaper housing in an apartment. They have a shuttle which can be problematic if you don't like to follow bus schedules and if traffic is bad. Use the facebook group to find roomies!

Scholarships - NSU doesn't have scholarships; we do have 2 fellowships that take place between M2 and M3 year. You take a year off of school and complete it then.

Deferring - NSU generally does not allow students to deffer, or that was the last I heard when talking to Ellen

Webstar- the system when you apply is weird and don't invest too much energy into it. The school and all its multiple health divisions have a large number of applicants so it can be slow. The key is when you get a letter/call from Ellen

MCAT scores - don't bother worrying about what other peoples scores are; some people get in with a 22, some with a 38. Just be yourself and don't compare yourselves to others. It will save you lots of time, help keep an ego from forming, and help out a lot in the future. (i say this with love and as a tip for success to everyone). the application process is complicated and you are placed into "groups" that are generated off grades, when you applied, mcats, letters or rec, and real life experiences (i don't mean medical exactly), ect. and these are batched by dates. So even if you have a 36 on the MCAT that doesn't exactly mean you are deserving on an interview this late in the game. Save the energy and just hope for the best.

Interview decisions - generally they take 2-3 weeks. as they move into Feb-March you will be told 2 but that will most likely be stretched out for months as ALL med schools start playing the number game and figure out guess exactly how many applicants will accept or decline offers and then calculate how many people need to be wait-listed to ensure the class gets filled. It gets to be a pain in the ass but make sure to call once a week to check-up on your status.

I hope this helps. I know it is an emotional roller coaster right now, but in the end you will be rewarded. I love it here and I am glad that I made the choice to attend. There is a great atmosphere here and a great sense of community throughout the classes. If you have questions on deposits or applications statuses and the like make sure to call and hound the school, but don't annoy. 😀 If you have any questions let me know! Good luck!

For those that interviewed on the 6th, I think today is when we receive notification regarding acceptance.

I spoke with Ms. Rondino last week to ask when we should expect to hear and she told me that we should know by this Thursday.....so today is Thursday...

Is there anyone else here who interviewed on the 6th? If so, have you guys heard anything yet?

I know the people that interviewed the next day on the 7th for the med school experience were notified last week, but Im sure that is because they basically accept everyone from the med school experience so there is no real decision to be made.

Anyway...good luck to us!

AWESOME!! CONGRATS!!

I guess that means they are letting us know today.

So you were able to see your acceptance on webstar?
I want to make sure I am doing this right. Do you go to Webstar, then click Admissions and sign in and there it tells you about your acceptance?

Or do you have to click a different tab in webstar? Congrats again!!

No change yet on my webstar, but I am a bit confused.

You say that it changed from "invited for interview" to "provinsionally accepted".

However when I log into Webstar, it doesn't even say "invited for interview". It just lists my processed application. I hope there is nothing wrong with my webstar page. It never said "invited for interview". I just received an email invite for interview but my status never changed.

I clicked on it. When I do all it does it show the summary of my application. No "invited for interview" and nothing regarding acceptance...

Also, just curious. For those of you guys that just were accepted, would u mind sharing your gpa/mcat scores? Thanks again....the wait is killing me.
