Hi, everyone.

This is minor detail, but during my studies, I noticed that there is a discrepancy about the total number of polar bodies that are made at the end: either 2 or 3.
This detail seems to be different depending on different textbooks as well.
Some say the first polar body does divide further, leading to total 3 polar bodies.
Others say the first polar body does not divide further, leading to total 2 polar bodies.

Does this detail differ because it was affirmed fairly recently?
Which one is the right one?
I am afraid that I might be asked "How many polar bodies are formed at the end of oogenesis?" on MCAT;)

You would most likely not be asked whether or not 2 or 3 polar bodies are formed, because it's actually an unclear area of our current understanding and depends on the organism. For your curiosity though, in mammals the first polar body typically degenerates/undergoes apoptosis before subdividing, meaning there are typically only 2 polar bodies produced in mammals.
