******* NYCOM Class of 2011 Part 2 ******

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
30 students did not get kicked out of our class. There were several (like 4 or 5) that failed and were not asked to return. The rest that failed were asked to repeat 1st year, and some took the offer. Any other people we lost, left by choice.

THe reason they are so concerned with board scores is because they are trying to implement a rule (not sure if it is official yet or not) that you not only have to SIT for step 1 before starting 3rd year, you have to PASS step 1 before starting 3rd year. This will be a nationwide rule, not a local one, and I don't know when they are implementing it, but it is still a concern for all schools.
This will be for all medical schools in the USA or only osteopathic?

From the NYCOM student handbook:

I. PROMOTION REQUIREMENTS
Promotion from one year to the next is contingent upon the following:
a) Meeting Satisfactory Academic Progress Standards;
b) All financial obligations to the college must be met;
c) Students must have exhibited professional conduct and excellent moral and ethical behavior;
d)Specific COMLEX requirements:
Class of 2009 and 2010 are required to take COMLEX Level I prior to the 3rd year and to
pass COMLEX Level I prior to promotion to the 4th year
Class of 2011 are required to pass COMLEX Level 1 prior to promotion to the 3rd year

I am not positive if all schools have instated this policy yet or not. I know that some allopathic schools already have it.

Interesting... I guess they want students to demonstrate some proficiency before partaking in patient care? Class of 2011, be ready!

Hi All....

I can't believe this place drew me back in!! I haven't been on in so long, but while reading your posts, I felt compelled to offer some perspective. I am currently a third year student at NYCOM and having recently taken the boards, I can confidently say that there was nothing on my board exam that was not covered to some extent by our professors at NYCOM - whether it was an in depth explanantion of the subject or one that merely scratched the surface. I did well on the boards as did most of my classmates - at least those I have been able to get in touch with. Additionally, if there is one thing I learned from the whole experience is that you cannot depend on your school to teach you everything that is going to be on the boards. I complained about NYCOM each and every day of my first two years. I would complain about how they weren't teaching to the boards, etc. After sitting for my boards, I realized that they had done a great job with what little time they had. There is far too much information in medicine than can ever be taught in 2 years. My advice to you guys is to make the most of what NYCOM has to offer, although some days you may ask yourself exactly what that is. You will all pass the boards, you will all do well in medical school!! My parting words - GET FIRST AID AND START ANNOTATING IT NOW!!! There was nothing on the boards that was not in First Aid.

If anyone has any questions, feel free to PM me.

Best of luck to all of you.....you are all on your way!!

Thanks for your great insight. It's good to hear that the lectures are at least in some way helpful in preparation for the board.

the other issue is that there is some big thing happening this year, which may or may not be reaccreditation, but does definitely involve random visits by some committee of people from outside the school who will be placing some sort of judgement on the school after their observations. the simple fact is that a lot of the reasoning behind the new attendence policy has nothing to do with any of us and them caring at all about our success, and everything to do with them not wanting to "look bad" to this committee. can you see scadalis trying to explain why there's an enrolled class of around 300, but only 30 ppl in the lecture hall "um, well, they all selectively stream from home, often at double speed, because so many of our lecturers suck" is not a winning answer.

Thats an interesting rule being implemented.

Venus just double faulted again.

I say interesting b/c of logistics - it takes 3 weeks to get your scores back and I'm assuming they know when you know... rotations start July 1... which means you have to take them in May if you want some sort of cushion... most take them in June but then that would mean the night before rotations you would find out you're not gonna rotate b/c you didn't know about the JAK/STAT pathway... damned JAKSTAT... but I hear JAK STAT kinda stuff is more on the USMLE and not on COMLEX... so then you wanna take them in May. Classes end in May. Ooooo man what if you failed the last thread and had to take the course over again in the summer, but had to take Step 1 in May! that would suck. Don't fail people!! The upside of course is then you have a month off if you pass (which most will)

Shes up 6-5, still in the first... But Henin is friggin ridiculous... are you watching this???

indeed i am not watching that. i'm being a good little group member and i'm reading up on HIV associated achlorhydria, both it's causes and effects. so there 😛 but i will email you my findings, slacker-boy.

that is well put! :laugh::laugh::laugh:

Does anyone have any suggestions on where to buy medical equip and what we should look for?

i got my otoscope/ophthalmoscope set on ebay for $65. you can also find scopes and cuffs cheap online if you look around enough.

Hey guys,
When Dr.Dixon told us that whatever is on quiz will include Friday, did she mean friday Sept 7th or Friday 31st??I was a little bit late and did not want to bother people by asking them...

Thanks a lot!!!

I thought she meant the 7th, but now I am a little confuse as well. 😀

I think she meant the 7th. But with her I doubt even she knew what she meant.

Btw where are you guys getting your scrubs from? Any good sites?

Go to Walmart, they are cheap, and you can try them on. Be careful with allheart.com if ordering scrubs... many of my friends got scrubs that were considerbaly too small for them from one of their "big sales."

Should we memorize all this bacteria stains and lab techniques??

I think I have information overload....:scared:

I thought so too,but wanted to check 🙂

Check out the "model" close to you. Some of their stores (the one in Flushing for sure) sell scrubs for 20 bucks a pair.

Life Uniforms is the place to get scrubs if you're extremely tall...they fit me fine and I have a 37.5 inch inseam Also, they are a long fit so you probably won't need to buy larger than xl if you're tall and thin.

They are as huntergather said rather cheap as well.

In regard to the microbio...you probably will get questions on staining techniques, etc. Pavia and May like to ask a broad range of questions. Most of them are rather basic, they give you a clinical scenario and ask for a diagnosis but they always ask a few 2nd and 3rd order questions meaning that they'll give you a clinical scenario and say "how would this organism best be identified". You'll have to know the particular stain used to find it. Or "what is the best course of treatment". Etc. etc.

Microbio is a pain in the butt to study but if you have the time, go at it because if you know it well they're easy questions to answer.

Thanks a lot for the scrubs advice!

Well we've only had one class on micro and he kept saying that we dont need to know details right now and we'll get to it later. Of course as Im starting to figure out with NYCOM, trust no one.

Well, you may not need to know the details, but I have a feeling he expects you to know more than what would be reasonable. Microbio gets easier as the year goes on since many of the organisms are repeated over and over through multiple threads. The first time you see something it's tough to remember but when you see it for the 3rd or 4th time you remember it.

Can someone tell me why we're still clapping at the end of each lecture?! I mean a guest speaker is fine and the sense of relief when Dr. Dixon finally ends is certainly worth the cheering but it kinda looks funny 😀

I actually emailed him and asked him this a couple days ago; he said to focus on what he emphasized and spent time going over during his lecture.

do we need to know the omm lab stuff?

q 5 from dixon's genetics problem:

Ellens brother mike has sickle cell disease. Ellen is not affected and is pregnant. What is ellens risk of having a child with sickle cell disease?

so you know that since this is an autosomal recessive gene, and since her brother had the disease, she is most likely a carrier of the disease and so she cant have children with the disease unless her husband is a carrier.

What is the risk that her child will be a carrier?

wouldnt you cross a homozygous to a heterozygous, and so the answer should be 50%, however, it is 1/3

can someone explain part b to me please?

first off there is a 2/3 chance that she is a carrier and then there is a 1/2 chance of her fetus getting the sicke cell gene if she mates with a carrier. since these two factors are dependent on one another you have to multiply them both which will give you 1/3

I still ask myself that very question, but its tradition....I wonder how it started

It is one of the "unintended side-effects" of having the orientation day too close to the actual classes.

You guys in 2010 still clap after lectures?

Yes, and I think it's dumb. Guest lecturers are one thing, but the rest of them are there to teach us, I don't find it necessary to applaud their greatness.

How far did Dr. Youmans get in the Receptors lecture? It's almost 200 slides so I can't imagine that he got through all of them... I hope...

Does anyone want to take up my 9/13 spot for ICC? Imagine you will be done and over with and not have it near an exam or quiz!! ..Ok that was my try at making it appealing..

message me if youre interested but let me know tonight or tomorrow morning so we can switch it

Remember, unless they explicitly say so, you're responsible for everything in the packet Dr. Youmans gives out. If it's written in his text part of the packet, you better know it! 😱 Same goes for Dr. Stepp.

We got up to the Receptors II slide. The last slide we covered had to do with Spillover (when there's a lot of hormone they can sometimes attach to a different receptor).

thanks 🙂

i bailed after dixon's first hour, couldn't take her anymore. and i was much more productive at home.

Did anyone buy any med equipment from the sale today?

Just wondering if anyone else has a Littman Cardio III and knows how to change the pediatric diaphragm to a traditional bell? I can't for the life of me figure it out, and according to the instructions, you're just supposed to twist it off? But nothing is twisting.

Dixon and step should get married... boring is an understatement when those two speak.

tap the membrane of the bell to see what side is active. hold the tube near the bell with one hand and twist the bell with the other hand clockwise or counter clockwise until you feel a click. tap the membrane again.

I understand this attendance policy is a heck specialy the whole clicker thing... but sometime when we have off and I feel relax I waste my time at home. If I am in class I am pushed forward and the stuff wont be adding on top of each other for the test day.
But again it is anoying for some lectures... and what is harder is fiding the right balance for the school.

I feel b/c of the everyweek quiz policy we will do better in our COMPLEX.

Where in the First Aid USMLE should we start studying?

did any one get the Fisrt Aid Cases for USMLE and First Aid for Comlex as well?
How do you study them?

Yeah as its been said before, the mandatory attendance will work well for a few students and those probably will show up to the classes even without the clickers. Different students have different ways to study. Ive tried both and the mandatory attendance is killing me. I am much much more productive without it.

We're not in high school anymore. Students should have some say in their own education and forcing them to sit in class is silly. Loads of other schools have streaming video and theyre doing wonderful! Im actually starting to regret saying no to other schools and I wish I had found out that they were going to change their policy after acceptances.

I'm someone that would normally go to class even if this attendance wasn't mandatory, but I have to say that this policy is ridiculous. First of all, the way they take attendance is a joke. It is a waste of time.

Also, the fact is, it's nice to be able to not worrying about hitting 80% lectures. There are some weeks where you dont have hospital notes or religious reasons to miss class. It's going to suck in a short thread where if you miss like 5 days over 4 weeks you may fail the class. I also think that having to take forms to doctors or clergy for excused absences is ridiculous. We didn't even need to do that in high school. They're treating us like elementary school students. It's embarrassing to go ask a doctor or a rabbi to sign a form excusing you from school for the day.

Anyway though, I think it's beneficial to go to class mostly because I never restream anyway and if I'm sitting in class i can study and listen to the salient points, but mandatory attendance is ridiculous. They should do everything they can to encourage class attendance but making it mandatory is terrible. I think attendance should only be mandatory to people struggling academically, but that's it.

very well said.

i know people who were on academic affairs that have since graduated or are about to, and this issue came up alot. it was made very clear how we all thought this attendance policy was ridiculous. the point was made that you cant change the policy after people were accepted, because probably one of the reasons they decided to come here in the first place was no attendance/streaming video. and its even more bull that they changed it on you after an entire year of going here. and getting a note from a priest to miss school and go to church on a holiday? COME ON. that is EMBARRASSING. i'd like to see some of the staff go and ask their religious leaders for absence notes...

we did yell for you guys, LOUD, but apparently on deaf ears.... sorry 🙁

What I meant was to actually take that membrane off. It comes iwht this thing that will take the peds side and make it into a traditional bell (or so says the little manual) butI can't figure it out. Maybe I'm not explaining myself that well. Ah well, I guess I'll just wait and see what they tell me later on.

I am not so sure about what kind of equipments to buy for DPR.

Not sure if I should get Littmann Cardiology III - $137 (or) cheaper "ittmann Classic II S.E $80.
What about Harvey Stethoscopes?

Also, do you guys think I can get away with buying cheaper otoscope and opthamalocope online? or should I just get one of the good diagnostic sets for around 500 dollars.

Thanks for your input.
