******* NYCOM Class of 2011 Part 2 ******

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
no it doesn't say honors but if that combined 75/25 average is 89 or above you got honors.

hey guys need a little help
Is hypersensitivity vasculitis the name of the group that microscopic polyangitis is in?

What the hell is micrscopic polyangitis? All you need to know is hypersensivity vascularitis is like an allergy. Something ticked it off and you should remove whatever upset it so the inflamm. goes down.

microscopic polyangiitis is a vasculitis of small vessels. it's only mentioned briefly on one of dr. simon's summary slides from the rheumatology II lecture.

If Dr. Simon brings it up in lecture then know it. Some briefly mentioned items are important such as bursa of fabricius discussed for 5 seconds in Immuno system.

Yea, I'm pretty sure we didn't go over it in class that's why I mentioned it.

Good job by the class for flooding Gillar's e-mail.:clap:Hopefully it will result in more points.

so why is the softball game on friday when we have class?!?!

don't we also have class during the "mandatory" meeting/lunch with the AOA president?

excellent planning nycom 👍

Makes no sense to me. Maybe it is just a Halloween prank.😡 It looks like the class of 2010 will be playing soft ball by themselves.👎 The head is really not talking to the tail.

Being a team player means clicking your friend's clicker while they are up to bat. 😀

We would never do that. Its amazing how all 295 of us show up every day. Coles lecture today was riveting. I can imagine how orthopedics can top it tomorrow. How could I watch or play softball when the lecturers are so great! Why do we have clickers at all?!?! Class R0x!

hey, scores are up for the first MSK exam. anyone else missing two points on the written?

i think I am missing 2 points. who do we email or go talk to about it?

On my exam I ended up with a few more points which I was happy about. 🙂

I can't believe you lost points unless you bubbled in something that you thought you answered right on your answer sheet wrong. I don't know who you would see about that though my guess would be Clarie Bryant.

i'm pretty sure that you can make an appointment to have your exam hand scored, probably with claire bryant (as kappy said)

i also have a few more points than i would have had originally, before the answer key was updated. 👍

Okay can someone explain exactly what is "osteopathic structural examination"?
I mean what is the best way of explaining it to others.

what does N.B. mean in Dr. Cole's lectures

are we getting graded for this icc exercise? (i know they said it doesn't count towards anything, just curious)

I thought it count for passing ICC?? I am not sure.
Does anyone has ICC yet? I wonder how it went. I am a little nervous.

I had it yesterday. We were told that it wasn't going towards any of our academic record.

It was fine, really not as bad as you psych it up to be. The SPs are very nice and they give excellent feedback after each encounter. And for the first one you get to bring a sheet in with you that reminds you what to ask for the history (they give it to you there). The second one is all from memory, though. Some are there for well visits and some have a complaint. My second one was there for a well visit and also had a complaint from a preexisting condition, but it was good practice to go through the whole OPQRST with her. It's really not as bad as you think it's going to be and in fact, I actually enjoyed it.

Good luck!

Thanks. It doesn't look too bad now. 🙂

what does N.B. mean in Dr. Cole's lectures

i think its something in latin for take note. basically, its his way of saying that the info following is either cool or interesting to him. at least, thats what someone else in class told me.

Did Cole say there werent going to be NSAID questions on the test?

Hey everyone, how's everything?
Mus. Sys. is done. Finally, we get our first true vacation. I am so ready for it. 🙂

Happy Turkey Day peeps!

PS: Wish they always got the exam key up as fast as today

pneumonics for spinal nerves:

oh oh oh to touch and feel a good vein, ah heaven
(a = acoustic or vestibulocochlear, the rest are self explanatory)

to remember what they do:

some say marry money but my brother says big business makes money
s: sensory
m: motor
b: both

There are better mnemonics (the dirtier they are, the easier they are to remember).... www.medicalmnemonics.com

or

Some say marry money but my brother says big boobs matter most.

Those are the one's they taught us last year!!

well we haven't been taught any yet... the ones that i posted i got from a friend who goes to another school. whatever works, though.

Neuroanatomy Through Clinical Cases by Hal Blumenfeld

Probably the best textbook I bought all of last year.

If you read through it and do their case examples, I guarantee you'll ace the first 2 exams. The third exam was mostly psychology last year so this book wasn't that useful, but the 1st two exams were difficult and would have been even more difficult if not for this book. He honestly puts all the neuro into situations that teach you to understand the pathways as opposed to trying to memorize and regurgitate random information.

I thought the BRS books were useless and this was the only one that was a must have for neuro...

Just figured I'd throw that out there.

for what its worth, i liked the BRS neuroanatomy, i thought it gave a great big picture for all the anatomical terms. using that, i was able to extrapolate the anatomy into to clinical cases.
the book they tell you to get is kind of crappy.
hope the course is going well for you so far, its really important to know. i cant even count how many questions i had on my boards of spinal cord lesions and strokes.

Gobig that book is dense! What do you recommend reading? I mean i barely have enough time as it is. Should i just skip through it and read the clinical cases from each chapter that are relevant?

Does anyone know what the neuroanatomy schedule is for tomorrow?
Are we supposed to shop up at a specific time?
Thanks

The neuro first lab schedules are as follows:
A1, A2 are at 8:00 to 10:00 am
B1, B2 are at 10:00 to 12:00 pm.

Anyone know what we need to know from Dr. Rabin's lecture? 😕😕😕😱:wow:

Any 2nd years want to chime in about these neurolabs? Hallas said we can sign in and leave if we wanted to. Is it worth it to stay when everyone is there or should we just sign in and come back at another time? Our time is limited these days as you know 🙂

Neurolab is a complete waste of time. You will not have actual brain specimens on the practical it will all be pics from a neuroannatomy atlas. Last year Hallas used the Hanes atlas. This year it might be different. the only time its worth going to look at actual brains is right before the practical just so you can have a real image of the structure just as another way to make associations. You'll see for yourself the fellows are not very helpful. You will have to learn it all on your own anyway, so dont waste your time with lab. thats just my two cents.

That's what I heard. I purchased taht hines book anyway 🙂

are the fellows that awful? my year they rocked. the last couple of years i have heard some not so great things though.

Definitely not worth it to be there during lab time. As for going in at other times, it depends on how you learn. I personally learn better when i can look at a real specimine, so i went in like once or twice a week, then studied the pictures during breaks and stuff. If you are fine just staring at atlases, then you shouldn't need to go in more than once or twice. You don't want to get these quesitons wrong, though. It's easy points!!!!!!!

Don't wast your time at the neuroanatomy labs. Memorize the atlas that Hallas gives you and once you've done that, you may want to go up to the lab and just see the real thing on your own time. It'll take you 15 minutes in there if you know the atlas.

Anyone know what we need to know from Dr. Rabin's lecture? 😕😕😕😱:wow:

For Rabin, look at his slides online. They will have extensive notes under them in the note section, it's a verbatim copy of what he says in class (jokes included) since he reads his notes right from there. Basically memorize that and you're good to go.

Have to agree here. kind of scarey to actually read Rabin's Power Point notes and discover that it follows his lecture verbatim including the jokes. definitely restream Dr. Hallas to be sure you got everything down. His 30 page packet is not too overwhelming if you just concentrate on what will be included in the coming exam.

If you get confused with Freidman or other lecturers go to the Barr book or another source especially for things like Striatal Motor System 😱, papez curcuit, etc.

Hallas, Hill, and Leheste are definitely a breath of fresh air when they do lectures for the Normal (histo, anatomy, etc.). Things get more interesting once you start doing the abnormal (clinical, path, pharm, etc.)

What about that clinical neuroanatomy book by blumenfeld? What do you guys suggest I read in there?
