Hi all,

The current first year vice-president will be hosting a beach party / luau for all current NYCOM students as well as incoming students of the class of 2011. The party will be held on Friday, June 1 beginning at 2 pm. There will be two bands playing, starting approximately around 5 pm. The address is: 28 The Boulevard, Bayville, NY 11709. Feel free to bring whomever you'd like.

If you have any further questions feel free to email either [email protected] or [email protected]

This would be a great opportunity to meet some of your future classmates (especially if you are looking for roommates) and upper classmen.

We hope to see everyone there!
Ryan

Sounds like fun, but I won't be able to make it. I leave next week for Europe.

For those of you looking to live on your own, unless you are independently wealthy (lucky you), you will need grad plus. I know people who thought they wouldn't and ended up getting it once school started, which is a pain, because it takes a while to process. You are best off applying now. How much you take really depends on how well you budget. I took max this year (i am a first year), and I budgeted well, and I will now have enough money to pay off my car loan this summer so that I don't have to worry about a car payment anymore. If you like to go out a lot (not that you have time, but people do it), you may find that you need more. Plan to need $1200 a month for rent/utilities/gas/groceries. Beyond that, you will need money for books, and other expenses. You won't believe how much you start eating out when it's the last week before a test and you just don't have time to make 2 meals before you leave for school in the morning.
As far as what stafford covers, it really doesn't go much beyond tuition, fees, books, and insurance. (for those of you out-of towners, check to make sure your parent's insurance has doctors in the area before you stick with it, because I've found myself visiting 2 specialists since i've been here, and neither would have been covered if i stayed on my parent's insurance).

I don't come on too often, but feel free to PM me with questions.

HI guys im filling out the student loan entrance interview. Number 6 says the current lender of my loan__________. That is for this year right, not past loans. And if i borrow from nycom are they my guaranty agency?

Well I had the same question a month ago so I called Financial Aid, the way they made it seem it refers to previous loans and being that I have none they said to either leave it blank or enter N/A. But feel free to call them and double check.

hey guys. a quick question for people that know the area... is hempstead close enough to live in and still commute comfortably (less than 30 mins) to nycom?

thanks!

Well I just graduated Hofstra, located smack on the border of Hempstead and let me tell you, the commute isn't awful especially since classes start at 8am so it'll take you about 20 minutes by streets since highways are always packed, but safety wise, you DO NOT want to live in hempstead.

ohh. i would not have known that... thanks!

👍 👍 👍

I live in the next town over (RVC) and trust me the commute is twice that amount. I wish it were 20 minutes 🙁

Dulcevee - Trust me when I say you don't want a place in hempstead, find one by school.

Thanks for the advice everyone. My boyfriend is moving with me and will need to be near transportation to get around since he won't have a car. So we're thinking Queens, unless anyone knows of an area near nycom that is convenient for public transportation?

I wish you all luck, I will be withdrawing my acceptance either today or tomorrow. Question, how do I exactly go about withdrawing, phone call, email?

To be honest, nowhere in Nassau County is THAT bad to live but Hempstead is not one of the more desirable places. Honestly, the highways aren't packed at 7:30 AM in this area as long as you're not going westbound. If you're going eastbound or northbound you'll be fine.

Queens is a great place to live if you live on the northern part of queens and if you live right near the LIE. Our apartment is in Fresh Meadows blocks south of the LIE. Leaving at 7:15 I can make it to NYCOM from there in 20 minutes.

Fresh Meadows, Douglaston, and Little Neck are all nice areas in Queens to look for apartments. The only problem with those areas is there is no real subway access so you'll have to either take the bus or LIRR to get to Manhattan.

I know Forest hills, rego park and kew Gardens are also very nice but I'm not sure how long it takes from there...if you hit any additional traffic or not because it's a little more towards the west.

I just got my notice in the mail today!! I'm off the waitlist!!!!!:hardy: Congrats to everyone who made is this far. See you guys in August.

I had planned on using my parent's health insurance provider, but after going over the form I noticed they ask about dental, which I do not have. Can someone tell me whether or not you are required to have dental insurance, or perhaps which office to call and ask?

without traffic, it takes around 25 min. to commute from rego park/forest hills to nycom.

You are required to have dental insurance. I think you can purchase it separately though so it should save you some money.

Nobody wants a doctor with bad teeth and gingivitis!😎

Gotcha, thanks. Any idea which office to call to ask about purchasing it separately?

Be sure to check out how long the subway ride is to manhattan; if it's long, be sure to live near an LIRR stop. I have a friend in Queens who it takes just as long to get to manhattan as me, and I live in Nassau county, b/c he takes the subway and I can take LIRR!

Hello everyone, this is my first time checking in on sdn, just wanted to say hi, I'll be starting at NYCOM in the fall, right now my husband and I are living in Syracuse and will be moving down in the beginning of August, anyone else from Syracuse?

Congratulations everyone that was accepted and good luck to those that are still waiting. I'm writing this to you to give you truthful facts about NYCOM.
I'm currrently a student here and have numerous positions at the school so my info is legit.
Next year all classes will be manditory- Get a place in Glen Cove or as close as possible to school
Dont buy any books until you need them.
Get a laptop- it's key.
The money from the grad plus is plent y to live on if you take out the max amount.
Learn to do a lot of self learning because it's a 30/70 split on what they teach you and what you really need to know.
Get involved and meet the professors asap.
Learn to deal with frustration and school politic BS ASAP. It happens all the time.

Live in Glencove or on the North Shore of LI. Glen cove has great houses and a decent scene. Getting to school at 8 am will be a pain when you have to go to everyclass. Turst me I live in an area about 25 minutes away and those 25 minutes are key in the morning. Im moving to GC next semester to be as close as possible.

All you need before school starts is you financial aid packet filled out, a place to live, some cash for rent before your check comes in, and a strong positive attitude. Everything else you can take care of during the first days of school.
If you want to do work to get ahead instead of enjoying your summer.... buy a moore and daily's anatomy book and start reading the crap out of it. And a netters atlas.

You're taking a huge risk.. next year classes are going to be manditory. Communiting to nycom will kill you. Get a place in GC or port washington.. they have great train stations

I've asked this question before but you Evilcaterpillar are the first to say a laptop is really necessary. All other NYCOM students said it's a waste since it's mostly a distraction during lectures. I'm just not keen on spending another $800+ when it's not totally necessary. Even if I live at home and have a desk top you think it's really worth the investment?

i don't think the policy changes will bother us as much as you guys since we've never been at nycom with the old ones in effect. i agree, mandatory class at 8am might be a little rough, but i'm used to getting up at 330am now for work so i won't mind it so much. it will be like sleeping in 🙂

I started school with the same premiss as you, i have a desktop and the library lends them out why buy a laptop...well have way through october I was tired of having to borrow one from the library having to return it every three hours, having them run out of laptops, and not being able to save things on it. Plus youll want the distraction at some of the lectures. I know you're all psyched about starting but that enthusiasm hit reality when you;re sitting though a 4 hour pharm lecture that would only take you 1 hour to read from the book but have to be there because its manditory. Youll want to be able to take care of emails, and other stuff in class. GET A LAP TOP. The 800 is nothing compared to the 160000 youll owe.

I hope not. You're right about not missing the fact that classes were never optional. But having to be here eveyday sitting through lectures that are more boring than watching paint dry will get to you sooner or later. Keep up the good starting attitude and keep up with the work. preview, view, then review.... best way not to worry.

So aside from maintaining your emails and having something to keep you from falling asleep in lecture why the huge necessity?

Yes, a laptop is unnecessary...but to be honest, for $800-$1000 you can get a decent laptop and it will be a lot more convenient for you. I mean, I guess if you have a desktop at home and you like studying at home you can pull it off, but it's probably worth it to just shell out some cash for a laptop in my opinion.

Hey, everyone
I just tried logging into the webboard, and I'm having trouble. It doesn't let me through, sais something like "this is a private board, no new members allowed" I did plug in the user name and the password they sent it to us. Anyone had the same problem?
Do you know how to solve it?

thanks

is anyone planning on going to the beach party on june 1? cant wait!

I know this must have been discussed somewhere I just can't find it. What is NYCOM's grading policy? Is it P/F the first two years or are there grades? In the clinical years is it P/F or grades? Thanks!!! I know no one wants to talk about school during vacation but I'm just curious.

preclinical years graing is Pass/Fail/Honors (top 10% of grades)
clinical years I believe it is the same but I'm not 100% sure on that.
