I actually just filed FAFSA yesterday morning and sent out the NYCOM paper work today....weird family stuff happening so just realized I would need to take loans. But the authorization form in the packet says NYCOM can deduct from your loans after tuition and fees are payed in order to pay for "other charges" I couldn't understand what that means.

other charges=health insurance, etc is automatically deducted.

assuming I apply for it that is?

thanks for the clarification! 🙂

Hi all!

Does NYCOM's acceptance/waitlist/rejection letters come in the old "Big envelope = good, Small envelope = bad" format? Just trying to kill some time while I wait for a decision on my app 🙂 <--- 5 weeks and counting :scared:

Big envelop for the acceptance. The letter says "Congratulation" after a few lines. So, don't freak out when the letter starts with something else.😀

P.S: thanks applicationsyea for the insurance info.

Yes. If you show NYCOM that you have "adequate" health insurance then you will not get their fee for insurance. Try to do this as early as possible. I can't think of any other charges NYCOM could be referring to.

What if I won't be getting the health insurance until I'm enrolled in the school? Right now, I have a very basic plan, there's no dental, no eye exams, just your basic plan. Once I start school, I can get put back on my parent's insurance, which has dental, eyes, perscription, the works. Will I still be able to waive the insurance fee since it'll be starting once I enroll?

you'll probably just have to wait till orientation to get taken off NYCOM's insurance. I didn't bother submitting forms until then and it didn't make a difference. Just don't forget about that first day of orientation and it can get crowded at the room where they handle it.

If it is not taken care of in orientation then NYCOM will just prorate the insurance payments monthly. I was thinking to change insurance during the school year and this is what was explained to me. Insurance is payed in 2 installments. One at start of school and 2nd in start of school in january.

I just want to say hi to all of you. I will be going to NYCOM next fall with all of you. I've come across this site few times before, but today is the first day that I come as a member.

Welcome to the NYCOM family!!!!

Does anyone know which number should I call about the health insurance waiver? I called financial aid department this morning and they transferred me to a person who was not available.

Thanks for the Health Insurance Waiver forms, but does anyone know where to send it???? Thanks!

I was thinking the same thing but I'm assuming to the same place we sent the vaccination papers? if not i'm sure you can just send it to the school and they'll figure it out between themselves, every administrative office seems to be in one building anyways.

Hey, I used to run religiously and am trying to get back into it. It would be nice to have a running buddy. . .

hey i wouldn't call myself a runner...but i am trying to be one...maybe we should try to get a little crew...the NYIT seems to be a cool place to run around...ill try to keep up with your religious runners

I got my fin aid letter, all tuition covered by stafford loans plus some NYCOM grant..Question if I want to take GradPlus for living expenses should I apply now or later? Did anybody apply for a grad plus this year??If so for how much money you asked?

how long did it take for you to receive the letter? couple of weeks

I run on weekends.

Hey guys, so i've got a silly question, I just learned that the specially I'm interested in requires a 3 yr fellowship after residency and I have no idea how fellowships work....anyone have any info? I'm also curious about how long it took to get the financial aid letter....I just sent my forms in last week so i really hope i get everything ASAP since august is around the corner.
Thanks!!

fellowship after residency is different than a fellowship during medical school.

A lot of specialties (cardiology, sports med, gastroenterology, etc. etc. etc. )

require you to first do a primary care residency (3 years) then anywhere from 1 -3 years of fellowship afterwards.

On the same hand...if say you want to be a hand specialist...first you do your ortho residency then you do a hand surgery fellowship for however much longer that takes.

Basically fellowship is residency at that point. You get paid like a resident and you work like a resident (if you do 3 years of residency and it's your second year of fellowship you get paid as a PGY-5), only you're a fellow so you'll have a lot more respect around the hospital.

Just curious, what specialty?

Neonatology, and what's a PGY-5 exactly?? If these are all stupid questions I do apologize but i'm sure it's better i ask them now then when med school comes around.
Thanks gobiggreen!

I have a question about the immunization form. Do you use the return envelop to mail back the form? The address on the return envelop is different from the attached letter. Both are to the registrar's ofice. However, on the attached letter, it specifically says the room # and the building name. Moroever, the last 4 number of the zip code is slight different. One is to 11568-8000. The other is 11568-9818. Please help me out.

Neonatology is a 3 year fellowship, so yea, you'd 1st have to match into a pediatric residency and do 3 years of pediatrics. When you are finishing pediatrics you'd have to apply for a neonatology fellowship. I'm not sure how difficult it is to get but if you do well in residency I'm sure it's not a problem. PGY stands for post grad year. So PGY-1 is your internship year (or your first year of residency) PGY-2 is your 2nd year of residency and so on. Each hospital pays all residents and fellows on a PGY scale where PGY-1 is the lowest (figure maybe 50,000) and each year you make about 5% more. It doesn't matter what residency you are going into, all of them are paid the same at each hospital. so if you're in your second year of fellowship (5th year total) and someone's in their 5th year of ortho residency you'll both be making the same money. In fellowship you usually also have to run your own research project before you finish up. I think neonatology is a 3 year fellowship so you're looking at a total of 6 years before you can do anything on your own. If it's what you want to do though, it will be well worth it. Definitely good luck.

E-mail [email protected] (Dr. Paul Twist DO). He's a lecturer at NYCOM and is a neonatologist at Winthrop. He'll definitely be able to give you more information and probably fill you in on the details of what you'd be doing in fellowship. If you introduce yourself as an upcoming NYCOM class of 2011 student I'm sure he'd be happy to help you.

Ladies and Gentlemen,
Ready for the tuition increase of 5.5%, as per email from the dean?
Tution is now cool $37,365.00 Plus other applicable fees.
Enjoy.....!!!!!

I got my fin aid letter, all tuition covered by stafford loans plus some NYCOM grant..Question if I want to take GradPlus for living expenses should I apply now or later? Did anybody apply for a grad plus this year??If so for how much money you asked?

I'm really confused about Grad Plus loan too, did anyone applied for it? and is there any other loans that current NYCOM students applied for?

I think I'll either call NYCOM fin aid or T.H.E - my lender and ask about GradPlus, I am so confused....

Once they've figured out the fee, they should be able to figure out the max loans. At that point we can apply for grad plus

Not sure if this helps...this was sent to the first years a few days ago...

Dear Student,

Here is a breakdown of the cost of education for the Class of 2010. This budget includes tuition, fees, medical/dental insurance, books, supplies and living expenses.

If you plan to apply for a private or Grad PLUS loan, the maximum amount you may request is $26,680. Since federal regulations do not allow schools to certify a loan for more that the cost of education, the loan amount will have to be adjusted if you receive any funding other than the Stafford loans.

In order for you to receive your refund by the end of August 2007, you must apply for the private or Grad PLUS loan no later than July 12, 2007. If you apply after this date, you may not receive your refund on time.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the Financial Aid Office at 516-686-7960.

Does anyone know what vaccinations we need before school starts? I know it is required. I didn't receive any information about it.

Hey All,

Adam here, NYCOM class of 2010, DPC program. I'm going to be moving out of my current apartment, and I'm trying to find someone to take my spot.

I live in a house that has 4 apartments, all with NYCOM students. The apartment is in an excellent location, only 2 minutes away from NYCOM Campus, with plenty of restaurants/shopping in the area. My apartment is a 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom apartment. There will be one available bedroom, and you'd be getting your own bathroom. The apartment also has a large living room as well as a kitchen, and a huge back yard with plenty of parking. The rent is ~$725/month; Utilities are ~$25/person each month, and TV/Internet/Phone varies with your choice of provider. The apartment should be available sometime in June, as I hope to be moved out by then.

If you have any questions, or if you're interested, email me at [email protected] - I usually don't check the forum so that email is best.

Best of luck guys,

Adam Litroff, OMS I
NYCOM 2010 - DPC

So I have a huge problem, I was at school when my Finaid paper went home, and I didnt know it had come. I just got home after finals and realized it was due on May 2nd. What do I do? Im so freaked out. Additionally, once I sign and send the paper work, do I have to borrow the money if I get into another school? (I am on a few waitlists).?

Are you talking about the initial applications? I would call them and ask what you should do.

You should be ok. I had a family situation come up so I had to take out loans last minute and I had called them on May 1st they said 1st year students still have time, just get it in as soon as i can and it's not a problem. I guess they only crack the wip after to second year students +. Anways call them but you should be fine just get everything out to them ASAP, and u don't have to borrow any money, it's just a package they present and it's up to u to accept.

I got my NYIT ID the other day. However i cant login, it says my info does not match. Anyone have this problem?

could un please post webboard link i remember generic password.

I'm talking about personal ID. Maybe they're sending them out slowly in reverse alphabetical order? My last name starts with a V, so if they're going backwards and senign out a few at a time, it might explain it.

So, unfortunately, I will be withdrawing from NYCOM soon. I just got into one of my top choices.

I did have a question though, I had sent in the master promissory note for the stafford loan on the due date (May 1st) via the website. How do I cancel the loan, or when I withdraw is it automatically canceled?

New NYCOM students BEWARE:

There's going to be a lot of changes next year...

The administration doesn't seem to listen to student opinion so amongst the changes:

1. There will be no retests. If you fail either the written or practical portion (OMM + anatomy) you will be taking a remediation course next year. If you fail 2 parts OR the remediation course you will be saying "bye bye" to medical school.

By the way, I'm somewhat for this policy because I don't think kids should be allowed to keep failing and retesting, but I think they should give everyone at least one 2nd chance. Also, I would venture to guess that at least 40% of the kids have failed at least 1 test this year and probably 20% have failed at least 2...I don't know about these numbers, but it seems like whatever class you enter with may be significantly smaller than the one that finishes the year.

2. 80% attendance at lectures will be mandatory. They're going to give a quiz every hour (which apparently will also count) and if you haven't been to 80% of the lecture hours you fail the class or at least get docked points. This year attendance was only mandatory at OMM and anatomy (for part of the year). They're also trying to increase our number of lectures so we have less afternoons or no afternoons off.

The administration has refused to listen to any input from the students and these 2 new policies seem anti-student to a lot of us. While I personally didn't find this year to be too difficult in terms of studying I think next year things are going to be at least twice as difficult and second year is supposed to normally be easier for when you're studying for the boards.

If you've just been accepted to NYCOM I would honestly encourage you to voice some concern to the administration right now, especially if you have other options on the table for you. Once you sign on the dotted line, it may be too late for you to influence any changes which in my opinion is pretty sad.

** You need to fail two courses (This could be the written in one thread and a practical in another, two writtens, or two practicals) or the summer remediation course to get dimissed from the college. There is a rainy day clause so if you have a documented reason for missing an exam you can make it up with no consequences.

** They did not say that the quizes will count but they did not say that they won't. I would be very surprised if they did count. They also didn't say every hour...you will be required to attend 80% of lecture hours (not lectures) and Dr Scandalis said that if there is a 4 hour lecture the quiz may be given in the 3rd hour so people don't leave right away.

Don't be too worried, you guys are new so you won't really notice the changes like we will. We're just upset because we have zero say on this stuff and when we tried to voice how we felt at a class meeting the Dean called out the people making the criticisms and put them on the spot infront of the entire class (mainly by saying stuff like 'well if your mother was dying in a hospital would you want her to be treated by a doctor like that or like this'....it was very middle school on his behalf, but very typical of him).

NYCOM is going through the process of getting a new dean but more than likely Dr Scandalis (the guy we don't like) will get the job, right now he is the interrim dean. Things are a lot like the Bush administration at NYCOM right now, day to day life is fine, but when you stop to think about things they make no sense and you realize we're being led by someone who has no business being in charge.

Hi all,

The current first year vice-president will be hosting a beach party / luau for all current NYCOM students as well as incoming students of the class of 2011. The party will be held on Friday, June 1 beginning at 2 pm. There will be two bands playing, starting approximately around 5 pm. The address is: 28 The Boulevard, Bayville, NY 11709. Feel free to bring whomever you'd like.

If you have any further questions feel free to email either [email protected] or [email protected]

This would be a great opportunity to meet some of your future classmates (especially if you are looking for roommates) and upper classmen.

We hope to see everyone there!
Ryan
