anyone interviewing April 3rd around 11 am?

Anybody receive an interview invite from NYCOM recently???

Hey,

Does anyone know if we can do the $1500 deposit via credit card? The acceptance only talks about check/money order but I'm quite broke except for credit so yea that would be good if they took master card...

thanks!

Also,

First year NYCOMer's whats your schedule like? Anyone want to give me a day in the life?

Thanks!

so i just called nycom for an "update on the status of my application" (basically for them to tell me whether or not i got in) and the lady didnt even ask for my name she just said they dont give out acceptance notifications over the phone...werent some of you guys able to call and find out?

from what i know, you only hear via snail mail. when i called to ask when the adcom was meeting, the lady told me i'd be the first to find out.

I just got my acceptance package in the mail!! It was postmarked March 25th. 🙂🙂

I just got the interview invitiation/supplemental application in the mail!!!!

Current NYCOM students, interviewees and accepted applicants:

Do you guys have any tips for acing the interview? I would appreciate any advice to make the most of this opportunity! Thanks!

it really is just a conversation. my interview was very laid back, just going through my file and talking to me. they tell you multiple times not to worry and are very friendly. know your file, know why you want to be a doctor, be able to explain osteopathic medicine and why you want to be there. no sweat, good luck.

If anyone can speak to this, I am interested as well. Thanks!!!

It depends on the system. Very roughly (and no guarantee it will be the same for 2012):

Fundamentals - 8 weeks: M-F 8-5pm. 2 anatomy labs and 1 OMM lab per week.

MSK - 4 weeks: M - F 8-5pm with 1 anatomy lab and 1 OMM lab per week. You will get one day a week, on average, where you are out by 12.

Neuro - 12 weeks: MWF 8-12ish T TH 8-5pm 1 anatomy/Neuro lab and 1 OMM lab per week

Heme - 8 weeks: MWF 8-12ish T-TH 8-5pm Done with anatomy!! 1 OMM lab per week. On average, you'll get one day off a week when the other group has OMM

Derm - 4 weeks: ? <--- not there yet 🙂

You're awesome JP!

Thanks so much for taking your time and detailing everything!

Jimmy

The interview was very laid back. To echo what DOitToMe said, just know your file and be yourself. My interviewer actually asked to role play. The scenario we just moved next door to each other and I was introducing myself to him as neighbors.

So, um does anyone know what NYCOM's drug testing policy is? 😳 That is, should I expect a drug test the second I get there? Or when we start our third year?? I think i read somewhere that NYCOM had some random drug testing during the school year (is that even true?)

went really smooth compared to T-NY in harlem, at that school they play good cop bad cop, I went there with a good impression of the school and left with a bad one, with NYCOM it was the opposite, also the facilities are nice and dispite the large class size, considering nyit undergrad in next door, u will never run out of study space

i'd have to look up the specific policy but i haven't been tested as of yet.

Are there little breaks between these modules? If not when do we get restbits from classes? Is there a such thing as summer vacation in med school?

Thanks!

The only breaks you get are the gov't holidays: Columbus, labor day, etc and Thanksgiving (~1 week), winter (~2 weeks), and spring break. Otherwise, each system starts the day after the previous one ends.

Let me be the first to say that having 8am OMM the day after Fundamentals ended really sucked! Half the class was either late or absent/hung over

First year ends ~May 31st, and 2nd year doesn't start until ~Aug 10th. 2nd year ends ~may 15, 3rd year starts July 1st, but you take the boards in between them, so no break. 3rd year goes right into 4th year.

for anyone who plans on taking or has took the USMLE as well as the COMLEX, how does this process work? do you take both after studying for each separately? how much does the material differ in each? it seems quite hard managing to study for both!

Only major difference is OMM. The focous may slightly different some years USMLE was more biochem heavy, but the trends of each change from year to year. Also they say COMLEX uses more buzz words. But most students who take both say the difficulty and questions pretty much the same. For your degree all you need to take is the COMLEX. The school will try to tell you to only take COMLEX but many take both. It is very field and program dependant for which you will need. Anything competative (meaning field or specific residency program) take both or if after two years still not sure what type of doc. you want to be then you are also advised to take both to keep your options open. It will be hard to study for courses and keep up with boards no matter which you are taking.

I just got the interview invitiation/supplemental application in the mail!!!!

Congrats! Have you scheduled your interview yet? (I just got an interview invite, too!)

I remember for my interview that I was asked a lot of questions pertaining to my ways - weaknesses/strengths. hobbies. tolerances.

So it's good to know that kind of stuff about yourself.
MAKE SURE YOU HAVE QUESTIONS!
I read the stuff I got in the mail and got at the open house. 😀

Just got info in the mail today about orientation! To all those accepted, see you on August 18th

is any aware of the prematriculation program? i certainly do not want to be a part of this and was wondering if they notify you of having to be in it during acceptance or after acceptance. i do not want to anticipate this.

They only place you in that program if you are somebody that they liked but were unable to admit directly into the class of 2012 because something was lacking in your application. My friend was placed into that program and she got the letter instead of a regular acceptance letter, so it's not like they'll tell you you're accepted and then send you the letter afterwards. If you already got your acceptance letter, don't worry about it

Still waiting for an interview invite, but the people at NYCOM tell me they don't want me to send any update stuff. I have some nice grades from fall 2007 that they don't have. I sent LOR's to them but no one can tell me if they ever got them.

got my financial aid packet today, so the real business is about to start 😀

You'll get whatever you applied for. So if you put max, you'll get all of your stafford and $30k grad plus.

I don't know how much I actually need. Would the Stafford loan alone be enough to cover everything including living expenses?

noob question, I thought NYCOM only deals with stafford loans and you have to find your own lender for the GradPlus loan.

Thanks. you guys are right. The amount of stafford can't even cover the tuition+health insurance, so the gradplus is a must have...🙁

Is there any specific information I should know about NYCOM going into the interview? Anything about its history, alumni, etc. that is important to know?

You should know that they have a "proud tradition and a bright future". 🙂

Do you think I can get into nycom with 3.6 sci gpa but overall of 3.0 - 3.3 (grade forgiveness)? That is my number one school, will be applying next year!! Also have not taken MCAT

From what I hear, interviews are given all the way out till end of April, so we still have another month. Buddy of ours about 5 posts above here just got an invite. Keep your fingers crossed 👍

They might possibly ask you what you know about osteopathy...and why not MD.
