NYCOM Discussion thread 2007-2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I don't think it would hurt you to call, I interviewed on the 28th and called this morning, they told me all letters were mailed out on the 12th, then I went and checked my mail and I had something. I'm sure it depends where you are but I'm sure you will hear within the next couple of days. Good luck!😉

thanks, JessicaLynne. maybe the key is calling and the letter will automatically appear in my mailbox 😳
congrats, and best of luck.

I was in that boat also last year. People who interviewed the same week as me got there letter first and I began to panic. Mine came two days later ten days after I interviewed. Just hang in there I am sure its coming. Maybe we have the same mailman my mail from NYCOM always comes two to three days after everyone elses mail.😀

Somebody had mentioned that NYCOM is on Spring Break this week so they will not be conducting interviews. Does that mean that no decisions are made this week either? Does the ADCOM still meet?

Usually if they are not having interviews they usually don't meet either. Though I don't know forsure. Generally the school is pretty quick with its decision. For me I recieved my acceptance ten days after I interviewed. But they should get to you with a week or two after the interview. If not you should check with the school to see where they are.

I interviewed on the 19th of February and still haven't heard anything. NYCOM is my top choice. Anyone interview that day and heard anything yet? It's making me nervous that people who interviewed after me have already gotten acceptances and I still haven't heard either way. =(

If I were I would call admissions to see what is going on. Just because people who interviewed after you got an acceptance doesn't mean anything. It could be your interviewer never submitted his or her evaluation to the admissions office or that your file wasn't processed for other reasons. Make sure they are not missing any information like LOR's, transcripts, etc... I hope you are accepted to NYCOM. GOOD LUCK!!!!:luck::luck::luck:

I called admissions this morning. They said that a decision hasn't gone out yet and that the admissions committee hasn't even reviewed my file yet. It's frustrating because it doesn't make sense to me that people who interviewed after me have already heard and yet my file hasn't even been reviewed. Has this happened to anyone else?

For those of you already accepted that received your healthforms, I called admissions this morning to ask what they wanted for ID #. I was told to use my social security number and that we'll receive a new ID number at orientation. Just thought I'd share the info.

JessicaLynne,

Is that your dog in the picture and is it a chihuahua? I have been dying to get a small dog this past year, preferably a chihuahua because they are well adapted to apartment living and I think they are adorable. Are you worried about having a dog in med school? Everyone around me is adamant that I do not buy a dog because I will be too busy with school, any thoughts????

I'm just curious...has anyone received a REJECTION letter ??

The dog is a miniature pinscher, the absolute love of my life😍! He is our family dog we got him Christmas of 04', so he stays at home with my parents, but I will occassionally babysit him when my parents go on trips in medical school. They are a great dog for smaller houses/apartments also because they feel safe in small places. I love him, he has so much character and is so funny, you find yourself watching him instead of tv at night:laugh:. Although, I have to warn you they are very very very hyper, hysterical but hyper and then DEMAND your attention, they love to play and they do bad things when you don't give them attention, such as steal anything they aren't supposed to have and flash it in front of you and then run off and hide under a chair where you can't get them. I wouldn't reccommend getting a min pin in medical school just because you really have to be there to train them or they will be devils and they just need constant attention, they are very loyal!!!!! I mean its a throw up, I love dogs so its hard for me to say don't get one, but a lot of dogs need human touch and attention so maybe you should hold off til after medical school. But, if Chihuahuas dont demand much attention then why not!...look you got me to ramble on about my obsession with my dog!!!! Good luck, let me know if you make a decision.

NYCOM screens before they give out interview invites/secondaries so if you've received an invite chances are good you will be accepted. I forgot what the exact percentages were but if you do a search on here there's a excel sheet that has all of the DO schools and their acceptance rates.

EDIT Found it:

Applied In state/OOS; Interviewed In state/OOS; Accepted In state/OOS; Enrolled Instate/OOS.

NYCOM: 660/2637; 367/353; 286/254; 198/112

So if you're instate and invited for interview, you have a 78% chance to get in 🙂

For current NYCOM students, what is the dress code in OMM lab? During the interview I was informed shirts and shorts for guys and tank tops for girls. However since then I've heard some go shirtless, I though this sounded alittle swanky for future medical professionals, anyone shed some light on this for me?

Shorts + T-Shirt for guys. You can wear sweatpants or scrubs over it all if it's cold. Shorts + sports top or inverted buttoned shirt for the women.

You go shirtless (for guys) if you're palpating or working on the spine. You never have to remove your shorts

it's only swanky when they flip off the lights and turn OMT into a club, a disco ball drops down and they play hard core techno. it has a mykonos sort of feel to it...

I have been waiting since october to hear anything from NYCOM. I've called a few times but they always say to just wait b/c they interview really late. I mailed them some letters last week and called just now and an admissions counselor told me there is no way for her to check if it has been received and when my file is reviewed they'll let me know if something is missing. How is it that they can't even tell me if they got my letters?? Is there a particular person I should contact at the school that I can send an LOI to or something rather than sending it straight to the admissions dept?

Has anyone accepted for the fall received anything since those health forms??

I had a funny interaction with a patient I was working with that asked me about my arm patch which reads Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) and what I wanted to do. So basicily I went into a unnesarly long an abit confusing explaination of what a is DNP and how I am now going into osteopathic medicine, then was asked to explain how no the doctor of both of them have no relationship in term of the path to both educations, followed by the osteopathic explaination.

In short what do I respond to patients who ask what school I'm will be attending when time is a constraint. NYIT? New York College? I am just the guy who changes sheet? or just confuse them with quick NYCOM and run?

So anyone else get an acceptance lately? I Just got back from checking my mail, still nothing in my box from nycom. Two weeks and counting...

if people who are familiar with the ny area ask me, i say nycom. if people at home (ma) ask me, i say nyit's osteopathic medical school.

i think that i pretty much avoid confusion that way.

I want to first and foremost thank everyone on the forum for answering all my questions with much detail.

I just received the application for the Doctor Patient Continuum and wanted to see if anyone was already in the program and can detail what their day is like as well as their week. How long are their classes, and how do they prepare for class? I'm actually excited about the program and wanted to understand more about the involvement and time commitment to learning as well as teaching it to fellow students if thats what happens.

Thanks again for everyone's help.

I have a feeling we won't get anything else until interviews are over and the class is more or less established.

From talking to numerous NYCOM students about the DPC, I can tell you that:

-The vast majority of participants love it.

-Test results on board exams and performance on rotations are identical between DPC & non DPC students.

-You will need to work hard regardless of which track you are in.

-Do not apply unless you are inquisitive as a student.

Hey I wanted to know if NYCOM had a pre-matriculation summer program. If so how long is it, what is it, is it helpful...some pros/cons please.

From what I understand, there is a prep program for people who were liked by the adcoms but didn't get accepted post-interview because their application wasn't strong enough due to a lower MCAT or GPA or some other reason. These people get invited into a summer program where they cover some of the basic med school material (I think first year stuff) and they can enroll into the following fall semester if they pass this program. My friend did this program last summer and it was pretty challenging just because they cram a lot of stuff into a short period, i think it was less than 2 months long. But as long as you pass some exam at the end, you're good to go. Hope that helps!

When you say the following fall semester do you mean for the next entering class or the same entering class??

What if you are already accepted and you want to do the program, will they allow that?

Why would you want to kill yourself right before med school starts? 😕
There's plenty to study when school starts.

The summer before the year that they plan on entering. Meaning student applying for the class of 2012 will spend this coming summer in med school prep.

What if you are already accepted and you want to do the program, will they allow that?
If you want to start killing yourself over the summer go ahead and ask if you can. But you should know that the course that is taught is not necessarily a course that you will be taking in first year. I spoke to students in last years program and they were taking Cardiology with some Respiratory. yeah if you will remember it by second year great but it won't help you much with first year material.

If you want to do it check and see what system is being offered. In first year you take Fundamentals Course, Muscular skeletal system, Neuroscience and Behavior System, Immunology/hemotology System, and Integumentary System. If any of those are being given and you really don't want to spend the second to last free summer of your life doing something other than medicine then see if you can do it.

hey does selecting dpc or lecture base effect your chances to get into the school? or do they accept you first then look at with program to put you in?

you pick after you get accepted.

Hey,

I was in the later (11 AM) Feb. 27th group and got letter about five days ago w/good news 🙂 If you were in the later session, I feel that we were all REALLY qualified... I felt like the school was more selling itself to us than anything. Keep us posted and best of luck!

Do the DPC spots get filled first come first serve or do they wait until they get all of the applications? If its the first I am screwed because I think I will be getting my acceptance letter towards the end or in a few more weeks. Also, when do you find out if you are accepted into the DPC program or how long until after you apply do you find out?

I heard from a current DPC student that pretty much everyone who applies gets in. Last year they had 45 spots, while only 35 students applied.... So don't be worried!

Thanks a lot! I'm in the BS/DO program and our interviews weren't until a week or so ago. NYCOM hasnt recieved our letters of recommendation yet from our advisor...so it will be a while till we are accepted...just wanted to make sure I had a good shot at getting into the program😳

No prob man, good luck & see ya in the fall!

Quick question, does Dr. Muller still teach in undergrad? 😡

Dr. Muller retired last year, but people still whisper his name around Hummel's office. Did you have him?

This all depends on the year. I believe there were students in the current 2nd year who applied for DPC and didn't get it. As the program grows (this is only the 3rd year), it will be harder to get into I'm sure. They have a set # of spots, but I am pretty sure they wait until they get all the applications and then select.

Hey guys.
I got into NYCOM on February 19! I am really excited. My name is Mike. 🙂
I decided to do the traditional lecture-based option. 😀

I am anxious to get this financial journey started! And whoever said they haven't gotten anything since the immunization sheet really helped me feel at ease so thank you!

I am stuck on deciding to dorm or stay home. <--- this needs to happen soon!

For me it came down to dollars and cents and therefore I live at home and commute to school from Queens. It depends on where you feel you will be able to do the most studying. For me it is at home. Some do all there studying in school and like to live nearby. I know a few who started in an apartment and moved back home and there were also people who did the opposite. It really is a personal preference sort of thing. Congrats on your acceptance. Welcome to the NYCOM family!!!

i've heard from many people saying how NYCOM students have trouble getting residencies...any feedback on this issue?

One of NYCOM's strengths has been the matchlist. I am a bit surprised people have been saying that NYCOM students are having trouble.

Do a search on here for the residency match list thread. NYCOM has done quite well in the past. We have a good representation in a lot of the strong NYC programs across various fields (St lukes Roosevelt, Mt Sinai, NYU, Lenox Hill, etc)

Thank you Kappy1! 🙂
Where in Queens are you?
I feel like if I am studying at home and everyone is out and about doing their own thing - I am just going to positively hate life. I feel I would be better surrounded by students doing the same thing as I am (or similar). It was like that for the MCAT - I hated watching everyone around me having free-time.
But maybe starting out in an apt (experimenting) is a good idea. Thanks a lot. 😀
