I have an interview tomorrow and I didn't think about parking...can somebody tell me where I can park? Is there street parking or do I park on some lot on campus?

Thanks
Yeah same here, I interview tomorrow and have no idea where to park, probably just find an empty space on campus somewhere...

Just park in front of Riland...anywhere except the patient parking 🙂 Good luck tomorrow!

Wait, you were asked to submit your secondary before the interview?! when I called them, I was told to bring my completed secondary application along with a $60 dollar applicaton fee on the day of the interview. Is everyone who is getting interviewed doing the same thing? bringing their secondaries with them along with a $60 dollar fee?

^-- that was my plan. thats what I was told over the phone from the admissions office when I scheduled my interview.

good luck to everyone interviewing! :luck:

if any of you guys want to sit in on a lecture, or if you have any questions, feel free to send me a pm and we can work something out 🙂

For anyone who is interviewing this week, anybody else staying at the East Norwhich Inn?

heh good answer🙄

I am guessing it was not as "laid back" as you thought it would be, eh?
not really... the school is pretty sweet tho. the robot, pbl, anatomy labs were sweet (we got to see some sweet crossections and a cadaver). I pmed you, pretty sweet school, prob. where I'll end up if accepted.

mysta, who were you today? wow, so totally did no expect that interview...

Tall guy with the blue shirt/blue tie...and you? lol

My interview was pretty short so I don't know if thats a good thing or bad thing. She asked me where I applied, I told her I applied to MD Schools as well. She asked me if I was happy with my mcat (28R) and I told her no...

RE-LAX... it's not all about GPAs and numbers. You got an interview for a reason, so go interview with confidence and put your best face forward. That's all you can do...

ya hopefully i won't screw up the interview
thanks a lot

I interviewed today also. It was a lil stressful, but i think it was supposed to be that way. I asked my interviewer a lot of questions which helped me understand my interviewer better. I even asked him how i did on the interview. He said i did fairly well and even went on to say that he is one of the hardest interviewers that people will see. Overall i believe it went well and i think that they want to challenge ever interviewer to see how they react to questions. If you try to stay relaxed and answer your questions with confidence i think you will do fine.

Tanner i wish you luck. I hope you get in. I think that he was trying to stress us out before the interview and then when we had the interview it wasn't as bad as i thought it would be.

Hey,
Congrats to everybody who has been accepted. I was hoping you could give me some advice since NYCOM is my 1st choice school. I am a senior at a very prestigious university that is known for its intense pre-med program. I am from Florida. Even though I started off college rough, I have had a steady increasing GPA trend and I have made the Dean's List for the past two semesters. Right now, my GPA is around a 3.3. Hopefully by the time I graduate this May, it will be higher. I have not taken the MCAT yet, since i want to take a year off. What minimum score should i aim for taking my GPA into consideration. I have several strong LORs, both clinical and research experience, several leadership positions, involved in extracurriculars, have had a paper published in an international journal, and I have studied abroad.

Since you have been accepted, what places should I realistically apply to? Any suggestions? Especially for NYCOM.

27 or over mcat with 3.5 or over gpa should almost gaurantee as long as your interview goes well. try applying to pcom as well - their avges are lower than nycom's especially in terms of mcat (their avg is around a 24-25).

thanks.. so I take it you were the girl who said the dressing up as a clown comment... lol... it gave us all a good laugh. but he was tough on everyone, im sure you did fine, you thinkin bout matriculating if u get in ?

hey i saw the tuesday PM group walking around! hope everyone had a great day. did they tell you when you would hear back?

good luck!!!! :luck: :luck:

I interviewed today. I was really impressed with the school. The interview was pretty laid back, different story from the tues. Group it seems. Good luck to everyone interviewing in the future!

anyone going to their open house next week?

I'm a first year, and I went last year, and its a good networking tool. Make the effort to speak directly to Ms. Zaika and Ms. Croot. I chatted with them both, and they both welcomed me to email/call them. And that is exactly what I did, until I got interviewed, and then again kept up contact after I was waitlisted. I feel it kept my file towards the top when I may have been in limbo.

Plus, it always nice to come see the school 🙂

This school is very good, I really like the pBL curriculum!, the interview was very laid back ass well, man I hope i get into this school.

What's so good about the PBL? It seems like you could do med school education by yourself at home now if you do PBL... except for the anatomy lab and omt.

How long does it take for NYCOM to respond to you regarding your application?!? Its been about two months since I sent in my primary.

But in reality, most of med school education IS by yourself at home. The few hours spent in lecture every week are only the tip of the iceberg compared to how much time you must spend reading / studying either on your own or in a group. I think PBL is good b/c it recognizes this and puts the emphasis on reading on your own and then group discussing. The main reason for going to class for most lecturers (not all) is not to learn (it's very hard to do that at a talking rate speed) but to see what is important, what to highlight, what will be asked on the test and to guide yourself and generate interest in your own reading at home. Mandatory attendance is a PITA; I've been ill lately and having to get to school everyday at 8 to click in for attendance has been a major pain. PBL meets 3x/week for ~2 hours + labs. Even when I go to class, I rarely ever pay attention. Most days I will put my ear plugs in and read on my own during lecture, then go home and stream the material at double speed, thereby getting through it in half the time. Over the course of a month, this adds up to many extra hours of studying! Think about it - if class is 8-12 x 5 days / week. If you save 2 hours each of those days by streaming it at double speed that's 2 hours x 5 days x 4 weeks = 40 extra hours of reading / month. Use your time wisely.

Besides , if you wanted a lecture on the subject while doing PBL, you can always get it from the video site.

I forgot to mention the PBL first time Step1 pass rate this year was 97% (29/30) vs. 89% for lecture based. Take into account the small sample number for PBL and that lecture based includes EPP students (emigre physicians). Something else that must be taken into account is any student that applied for PBL must have had the drive to fill out an extra application; some of the less driven students would have been lumped in with lecture based. Still even after all that, 97% says something...

👍

I'm not totally sold yet on PBL tho... I'm just not 100% sure that I would be able to learn best on my own. I think I might accomplish more by being told you need to know x,y, z and then learning it. That being said, I think that PBL gives students a big advantage because you constantly discuss, and present infromation in groups. One would think that this would give you a huge advantage on rotations and rounding... The Dr. who presented the PBL curriculum at NYCOM (a DO surgical pathologist) was very impressive.

Hi Guys,
Has any OOS folks received an interview / secondary?

👍

Dr. Elkowitz is in charge of DPC (aka PBL); I believe that is who you are speaking of. He is also one of the best lecturers we have. 👍

have u guys heard about a fixed 7% increase in tuition yearly !!!
and a mandatory health insurance with 10% increase in cost yearly:scared:

As for the health insurance -- it is mandatory unless you have comprable coverage through a spouse or parent. What it means is that you can't opt out of theirs and get some crappy plan on your own, which would be way less expensive I'm sure. There's money in the living expenses budget for it.

Not sure abotu the fixed 7%, I was under the impression that they overshot it and gave us a projected 4 year tuition chart, but that was last year, and NYCOM loves to bring things up on us suddenly 😉

It's a good school regardless, I'm happy here.

Yeah that's how I interpreted the handout they gave us. It's not a fixed increase on tuition, it is just showing you that tuition (and insurance) will increase every year. I think the 7%/10% rates they used are on the high side, but they just want you to know what you are getting into.
