interviewing tomorrow 12-11-07. anyone else going? and should i be nervous?
 
im interviewing tomorrow in the afternoon section.
 
I think there was also a woman who helps run it. She was interviewing the other half of students the day I interviewed. She mentioned something to our group and I wanted to follow up. Oh well. If anyone caught her name it would be super helpful. Thanks!

I believe you might be referring to Dr. Christine Hutak. She gave the talk around lunchtime about DPC and interviewed as well. She is a big part of the DPC program and used to teach pharmacology I believe. According to the website her email is [email protected]. I hope this helps 🙂

Hey, I have an Interview on 1/24/08 and although I've been dragging my feet on NYCOM...i have to say reading all this has re-invigorated my hopes to stay in state for med school. I'm from Rochester NY and was wondering for all those who needed hotel accomadations for the interview...what hotel did you utilize and how much was it? I interviewed up at UNECOM and they have a discount for medical students interviewing there and I was wondering if Long Island was that cordial. Oh and If anyone else is interviewing on that date pm me so we can hook up before the whole wonderful game of med school interviewing begins.
 
Hey, so i'm from downstate (but go to Geneseo) and just a word of advice if money is tight -- don't stay near the school. stay somewhere a bit farther away preferably off the island or in jersey right across the George Washington Bridge. One of the big topics of discussion on interview day is the cost... they are very upfront with the fact that long island is a pricey place to live (and NYCOM is located on the "Gold Coast" of Long Island) so my advice would be stay somewhere away from the school and just get up a little earlier and drive in. (but budget time for traffic... another wonderful phenomenon in Long Island)

I stayed at the East Norwich Inn, which is literally 5 minutes away from NYCOM. They do give discounts to those students interviewing (you have to show your interview letter). I think it came to ~$100. I don't know if that is too pricey, I don't stay in hotels that often. It is pretty nice though and super close.

I don't know if i would agree with this. Especially if you're in the morning session. Driving over the GW can take forever in the morning. You're better off spending money and not stressing about getting there on time, or getting lost. When I interviewed I also stayed at the East Norwich inn. It was pretty nice. Now that I live down here, I'd say look at the holiday inn which I believe is in Carle Place, or the Hampton inn which would be considered garden city or westbury probably (all the towns are so close, so i'm not positive). They might be a little cheaper, but they book up fast. When I got my interview invite, they sent a list of hotels that offer interview discounts, did they do that for you? If so, go with one of those places.
 
I hear ya - I attend NYCOM and live in brooklyn. The commute can be a pain, but usually not too bad and I love being in the city. I wouldn't change it and move if I had the choice right now.

YUP, this school looks fantastic. But growing up in big cities and living in one now...the idea of suburbia freaks me out...........

Wow...you really drive there 5 days a week and stay in class from 9-5? That sounds ridiculously tiring, especially with the traffic.
 
We don't have class 9-5 every day. That was just in fundamentals. We might be there til 4 (sometimes 5) two or three times a week, but there is always a day where we are out by noon as well.

Just wondering...do you use the library at NYCOM to study? I visited the campus a while back to check it out, and the library seems very small...🙄

It all depends on your preference. Many people use the library (it is small, but there are 3 floors, and the bottom floor is entirely cubicles). There is also a quite study room (where I am now) w/ ~150 cubicles across from the cafeteria. This will be closing for construction temporarily, but will def be open next fall (and hopefully a lot sooner!!!) Some people study in the lecture halls, but i'm not sure what time these close at night. The DPC students often study in the DPC suites. The rest study at home, or their local library. Hope this helps! 🙂

like someone said, it does have 3 floors so it's not as small as it seems. also on campus is nyit's library which is very nice. has a ton of spots to study, including comfy leather couches etc. there are plenty of places to be productive on campus if that's your thing. personally, i study at home.

I love studying in the lecture hall..it's like being in church...so quiet 🙂 The library can get a bit loud at times, and the silent study room is anything but at others 😉
 
Interviewed Dec 2nd, Accepted, Dec 6th (Per Date on Letter)

Just thought that might help people figure out where they are in the applications.

I had an interview on 11/29 and was accepted on Dec. 6 (date on letter). At the time they said it would take about a month, but I found out in two weeks. I am not complaining 🙂 I just got the letter today 😀😀
 
Hi. My AACOMAS was processed at the beginning of November. I was complete at most of the schools I applied to by around Nov. 20. I've received a few interviews at this point, but I am extremely interested in NYCOM and have heard absolutely nothing from them except that I'm complete. Is this a lost cause or am I, like everyone else on SDN, freaking out prematurely? Also, what is/are the secondary questions like for NYCOM?

They take forever. Especially if you're out of state. And only those who are offered an interview get a secondary.
 
does anyone know what date the adcoms usually meet this cycle? i'm wondering if i have to wait for a long time to hear back post-interview (interviewed 12/11/07).

They said that they won't meet before the holiday season ends, and it will be after January 2nd. We were also told that if you don't hear from them before the end of January, then you should contact them. I interviewed after your date, so all this info will probably be useful to you as well.
 
Anyone send in a deposit yet? I think i'm sending mine at the end of the week.

I was complete around NOV. 15th last year and I didn't get my Interview Invite until Jan. 6th and had my interview Jan. 16th. Just hang in there. If you don't hear from them in a few weeks you can call the admissions office and tell them about your interest in the school. They may even tell you where they are upto applicants wise. Recently the school has been getting many more applicants than previous years. Last year it was 3800+ which was a 400 application increase from the year before and this year they are expecting more around 4000+ applications.

This is most definitely a nerdy questions 😛, but to all the current med students reading... what do you reccomend doing the summer before entering med school (other than enjoying your last batch of free time... ever) Do you think its worth racking up more clinical hours? Any books you suggest reading? etc. Thanks!
 
i interviewed december 11 at nycom. my interviewer was a laid back D.O. general surgeon. he was really cool about it and the questions weren't abrasive at all. somehow we got off topic and talked about UFC and gracie jiu jitsu. it was by far the most fun interview i've had so far..

From what i've heard it was laid back for everyone in my group too.
 
yea i interviewed with you man and i definitely agree it was a good day to be interviewed. i just really hope to hear back soon.

You're all gung-ho to get things done before summer....review biochem, volunteer, learn anatomy....but when it comes down to it- DO NOT DO A THING! This is the last time to yourself that you will have for a long, enjoy it.

does anyone know if the committee met for the people who interviewed in the first week of december? or do I have to wait til Jan?

did anyone who interviewed in early december hear back yet?

Don't do anything. You're already in, no one gives a heck what you do now. Just relax, enjoy seeing your friends and family. If you want to save up some money get an easy job, but that's about it! Read a lot of leisurely books, because once you're in school, you won't have time.

i stayed at the fairfield, which was nice, was ~$150 for the night, and about 10-15 minutes from NYCOM, tho my taxi ride was a little slower due to inclement weather. you might have to adjust your travel plans accordingly...

I tried calling earlier today and also earlier this week but got no response so I thought the admissions office was closed...guess not

don't worry about it, that happened to me too. You will know sooner or later.
 
i assume that letters went out or will go out soon (unless holiday closures become the bottleneck) because the adcoms definitely met some time this past week.
