NYCOM Discussion Thread 2010-2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Nymed you are correct about med prep. But in addition to what you pointed out. In order to be considered for med prep. You have to declare yourself educationally or economically disadvantaged and provide proof.

is that what they changed it to now? good to know... It used to be a program NYCOM put many people into, and made them pay, knowing most wouldnt make it out... I believe now its free or reduced, and NYCOM got a government grant to run it, which would explain the changes

I know of people accepted with a 25 MCAT and lower GPA than yours so I wouldn't completely lose hope. At the time that I interviewed I had a 3.8 and only a 24R on the MCAT (I also have an extensive list of ECs), but have since gotten my Jan MCAT back and got a 27R. I am still waiting to hear back about acceptance.

All in all I would not count yourself out, but I don't know what your ECs are.

Great Job! I would fax out your new scores immediately anyway to be sure its in your folder for consideration

Wow. That's scary. Lol. Yea it def changed. Now that they have the grant. They pay you!! They'll give you a stipend. I'll copy and paste part of the email I got.

Students who are admitted to NYCOM and meet the HCOP criteria will be provided with a variety of services geared towards promoting success. Some services include:

Thanks! And I made sure I did that the moment I got them lol

Whats funny is you might have held up all the considerations for that day, as it seems nobody from Jan 3rd received any news, and NYCOM reviews each days interview files the same day as each other. They also need to wait for the official score update from AACOMAS, so they might have waited to review the entire days files to get your scores in, to give you a fair shot. Works in your favor though

I don't know y it was cut off but here it is:

Anyone have Dr. Kumar as their interviewer? If so, how did that go?

Hey NYEMMED, I don't know if you would know this but when they review your file are they only comparing you to the other people who interviewed that day? Or are they comparing you to everyone else within that week/month? Sorry to disturb you and thanks!

Im not really sure how they compare people or make their decision but I know they like reviewing the applicants one day at a time because its easy to tell who the interviewer liked by comparison of the notes...other than that I have no clue

Hey guys

I just got back from my NYCOM interview. I liked the school, but what really interested me is their DPC program (that is what they call their PBL program).
Sounds very interesting and seems like a great way to learn-depending on the individual.

Dr. Leheste interviewed me and he was incredibly friendly and very laid back.

Dr. Leheste is AMAZING on so many levels, you definitely have nothing to worry about as far as the interview is concerned re: acceptance, etc. He interviewed me as well (1 year ago today, also!! Haha), and couldn't have been nicer. He's also a totally great lecturer with a genuine interest in the students & making sure we learn the material. I could go on about him forever, he's just the best! We're 2/3 through Neuro right now and he's a god-send in that department! 🙂

DPC is definitely not for everyone, though. If you prefer learning on your own, working in very small groups, etc, then go for it. I certainly didn't even consider it! lol

So while some of us wait in anticipation of decisions and others get excited about starting med school in a few months, can any current students talk about life at nycom. During the tour& lunch with ambassadors, they talked about classes 8am-5pm. Is it like that for both pre-clinical years? How does OMM dress code work? What else is key to know before starting school in August?

No, the 8am-5pm everyday thing isn't totally true. During the first few blocks of the year, there will be quite a few 8-5 days per week. The first semester, because you're taking OMM and anatomy lab with lectures are rough.

Second semester is rough for different reasons. There's no more anatomy so you have less of those 8-5 days, but you enter the 3 month hell that I'm in right now, Nervous System & Behavior. But the schedule/workload is generally lighter once you get through the first half of first year. That being said, don't let me terrify you, it's do-able and way worse than it sounds - my classmates and I are still alive, after all.

OMM dress code is basically shorts for guys, and shorts & a tank top for girls. You usually wear scrubs over them and just undress depending on what part of the body you're working on that day. It sounds & feels super embarrassing the first few times, but after awhile you realize that everyone feels the same way and after awhile, everyone is too focused on learning the techniques, etc to care about what you look like in your OMM gear.

What's key? Don't spend all your money on books. Chances are you won't even use more than half of the recommended books - just get a copy of Grant's Dissector, a good anatomy atlas, and the anatomy text at first (we used Gray's Anatomy for Students, I don't know if they'll use it again next year).

I agree with the above, I can add on info about 2nd year... 2nd year starts off with a bang in cardio/resp, its a lot of information and its fast paced, but the teachers in these courses are amazing! like Dr. Chaudry He is the president of the national federation of medical boards, writes part of the USMLE, and is a commander of the USAF medical flight division, and he teaches extremely well. There is less class 2nd year, for the most part you will be out by 12 everyday except OMM lab days. Its not free time though, you need to study for your boards during this time. 2nd years also start a week or 2 before the 1st years and get out for the year around april 30th, again a month off to study and take the boards by the end of June, Luckily NY state has a rule that you only get 3 shots in your entire lifetime to pass the boards.

Textbooks- Definitely like Christina said get the grants dissector it is essential. The other books on the list however, when you get it, dont buy them, wait to see what you need, and you will also meet your big brother/ big sister in the summer when you start class, they can tell you what to get. I would also recommend First Aid for the USMLE, and Costanzo BRS-physiology, clinical microbio made easy, and the savarese OMT review book

Just posting to say that my friend just got the acceptance envelope today. He interviewed on Feb. 3. He lives in NY so perhaps those of you still waiting who live further out may get it tomorrow? Good luck everyone! :luck:

I was born in NY and lived here till middle school then moved to Cali, and just moved back to NY last year. I like both! I know that NYCOM has a long list of great hospitals its affiliated with though.

thats gonna be a pretty hard decision then. i know western is a great school as well. good luck lol.

This thread has been silent! Lol. Seems like most of February has heard back. I suppose us March people are up for review soon 🙂

Sorry, even the one week wait so far has been killing me.

You're March 1st, right? I'm from NJ, so I guess I'll hear a day after whenever you do lol.

Who knows what they are doing at admissions. I haven't heard back from Feb 22, but a person from Feb 15th has heard, but my friend on Feb 3 hasn't heard back, while someone from Feb 9th also heard back. So 2-4 weeks is VERY tentative it seems. I just want my acceptance!

They mentioned at our interview that since Feb. was such a short month, they didn't meet as often. I'm sure you've heard that a hundred times already though lol. But yeah, I don't get the out of order from interview thing. Chalk it up to the short month, I suppose.

I interviewed Feb 23 with Dr. Plummer. She was extremely nice and made me feel at ease. This was by far the most comfortable interview I have been on. No news yet though.

Cool, keep us posted. It'll give us an idea of the adcom's progress with applicants.

I had Dr. Kumar as my interviewer. He definitely asked some interesting questions based off of my secondary app. Anyone else have him?

Dr. Plummer is such a nice lady 🙂

Feb 23rd? People who interviewed on the 3rd still haven't heard back, so don't get all freaked out yet, it's only been 2 weeks!

hey guys, so i interviewed a few weeks ago and i have not yet received an acceptance or rejection letter. however, i did receive an email about the HCOP program which includes MedPrep. does this mean that i will not be accepted directly but only if i can complete medprep?

No worries, I just figured I would chime in so we could try to keep track of the adcom.

hi guys. I live in western NY in buffalo and have an interview in late march. What is the best way to get into nycom from here? Bus or train and should I find one that goes directly to old wesbury? Or do I need to transfer from NYC?

also does anyone know the address for the interview of the serota academic center, i'm having trouble finding it.

Try looking up NYIT @ old westbury NY (there is no # on the address, just NYIT, or NYCOM on northern boulevard), its the same campus, once on campus find NYCOM and the Serota building.

As far as trains, you can go to the city and then hop on the LIRR, the school is literally 5 driving mins from the station. There is also a Amtrack but im not sure of its route.

Not sure of buses. There are public buses that go right onto campus, but you need to find which bus line that is.

Driving would be long but easy, We also have a girl who lives in Buffalo in my class, she flies home out of JFK, that is also a possibility for you, if you land at JFK take airtrain to Jamaica, queens, then switch to the LIRR to go to the school

Does anyone know when they stop interviewing?
I applied late (in late December), and I haven't heard from them. I figure that I probably made myself less attractive by waiting so long. I figure that if I haven't been invited to interview by 3/15, I am toast to them.

i called them a while back and they told me they interview till april... but by that point your most likely interviewing for waitlist spots

just called them and they said they're interviewing until the END of april because of snow days and the huge number of applicants.

Is there a spring break or anything going on now at NYCOM? If so, does anyone know if this will slow down admissions decisions?

Spring break isnt until end of April... and admissions should be almost done by then, so it shouldn't slow anything...

Thanks for that clarification. I just know that many undergrad/med/dental schools are on break this week, so I was just worrying if it would affect any decision time. Lol. It must be nice to have a spring break when it's actually warm.

Just thought I'd try to keep this thread alive. Today is the 2 week mark for us 3/1 interviewees. Hopefully good news is on its way soon :xf:
