NYU Class of 2008

I have an interview scheduled this week. Can anyone please tell me what kind of questions I should expect and is dressing casual or business?

I am really worked up. Do we know if they are still sending acceptance letters??

Thanks

Hello,
well dont worry about the interview as such coz it is one of the most easiest interview I ever had. the interview is really casual and they ask you simple questions.dress wise you have to wear a business attire.
best of luck,
take care,

I am a final year (soon to be... will be in about two weeks) student at NYUCD and would like to extend my congratulations to all that got into NYU. I will be happy to answer any questions that you might have regarding the school.

Regarding the dress code,
It is absolutely important that you wear formal attire to your clinical group practices or scrubs. Scrubs are mandatory during your OMS rotation. But you'd still have an year to go before you start thinking about all that.

I used to have a thread last year for the NYU batch of 2007 that you might wanna check out. I had pretty much covered a lot regarding the interview process, the medical clearance, loans, laptops, vitalbook, about the challenges you'd face as a second year student etc etc.

But, I'd be happy to revisit some topics if needed.

Dr. Hannibal

thanks dr hannibal for taking time out for us.. it will definetely be of great importance to all of us to have some moral support 🙂

can u post your tread link here so that we all can have easy access without searching.

Best Regards,
Saira

Dr. Hannibal,
Ii is great that you keep helping new students with all this valuable info. I have read all ur input even before I got admitted to NY college and found it very, very helpful. Thank you very much!!!! Since it was information for class of 2007 and it has been already more than 1,5 years, would you be able to update all of us on any changes that took place over this period of time? I mean curriculum, requirements, etc. Beside that, would you be able to advise us in terms of what every one of us should pay more attention to at the beginning since we will be overwhelming and might get lost in this pool of information at first and make mistakes. For you, upon looking back on your experience it will be easier to define things that you or your classmates have been trough and which might have not been happened if otherwise you were aware of them at the beginning and which might be solved differently without wasting valuable time and troubles?
🙂
Thank you very much again for giving your time and information to us!!!

Well, lot has changed in the past 1 yr in NYUCD, but the admission process, the loan process, the medical clearance et al remain a constant and prolly wouldnt change.
Anyways, The college of dentistry at NYU was merged with the college of Nursing. Although concerns were raised about this merger... the end effect is that our degrees would read DDS from the NYUCD rather than NYU college of nursing and dentistry. But, as an effect of this merger or maybe not related to this merger, NYUCD secured a grant of 26.7 million dollars from NIDCR a branch of NIH. This is the highest grant any of the NYU colleges has ever secured and prolly maybe the highest grant ever given by the NIDCR. This grant will effectively push NYU among the top 5 dental schools in terms of research.

WE now have a financial quota to meet in clinics, every student in the clinic needs to produce a minimum amount of money for the year.

I'll tell more as and when I remember more about the past year.

Unfortunately, I wouldnt have any answers to that. Its been a while since I visited the administrative block. But, rest assured, I have heard of people getting in to the program a day before the orientation.
Good luck

Hi,
I know this has been addressed before but I need some clarification on two things:
1) What are the specifications required for the laptop? The paper work they sent said the site will be updated soon, but nothing's on the web site.
2) Does every student have an evening lab session? In other words, are you assigned one batch and you stick to it every day (M-Th) for the next 3years? And on the days you have evening labs, do you start your morning session (lectures) at a later time?
It would be very helpful to know this because I am planning on commuting from Connecticut everyday! BTW, anyone planning to commute from Connecticut?

Laptops- YOu could either buy your own laptop or buy it from the NYU computer store. The minimum requirements for the laptop would be a Windows XP OS, has a disk drive, has internet connectivity, preferably a wireless network. Apart from all this, I'd personally suggest you go in for something lighter as you would be carrying it around.

YES, you'll have atleast one evening lab session and a maximum of two per week, the lab sessions are gonna be over 4 days monday to thursday- 3 sessions per day for 3 different batches -A, B and C. Now, if you were, say in the A batch- you'd have one session on monday morning (8 to 11AM), on tuesday and wednesday- you'd be doing the evening session from 530 to 830PM, and on thursdays you'd have lab sessions in the afternoon 1230 to 330PM. This is gonna remain a constant for you throughout your second year. The lectures are gonna be held for the entire class together - M- Th betn 3-5PM and all day friday (8 to 5).

Your clinical years (3rd and final yr) the whole batch is gonna be divided into two batches -A and B- again scheduled for two different clinical sessions. Students are also gonna be part of 7 different group practices multiplied times two (session A and B....), hence a grand total of 14 different group practices.

Hi Soniredy

How was your Interview? Who interviewed you? How many people were there? Did they have Stats similar to you? Did you ask Amy or your interviewer that how much time they going to take about your interview outcome?

Your input highly appreciated.

Dr. Hannibal,
Thankyou for all your valuable advice.
I have a question, will we be getting any holidays end of this first semester. Let's say Sept 1st, 2005 classes begin so will we get a week or 2 of winter vacation this year itself, as I'm planning to go visit family. Is this feasible?

Hi Dr hannibal,

I have not taken part 2 yet. I would like to know if i should take it before i join or wait till the end of 3rd year and take it? Do you think it is better to wait till we complete all the courses ? Will we be better prepared to take part 2 and get high scores? some say that we wont have that kind of time to prepare for boards once we join the program! and some say that courses and clinics will shape us well and help us score better!
what do the rest of you all think?
Adivice is highly appreciated.

Interview was pretty cool. I was interviewed by Ms.Novella Jones. She was extremely sweet and I got a chance to meet the Dean as well. Since I have some business background they seemed pretty impressed but then again you NEVER know. There was one more person for AP program and he had 86 on part-1. Ms. Jones did mention that they received 800 something applications this year and they have 125 seats.

Ms.Amy Knowles said we will be hearing from them in about 2 weeks. So I am keeping my fingers crossed.

Blue army- Nice avatar- I mean 'office space is one of the funniest movies I've seen. Now for your question- Yes, you'll get about 2 weeks off before christmas and extending into the new year that'd be your winter break. Apart from this, you'd get a week off as spring break somewhere in the first week of march ( talk about spring, it was more like extreme winter during the spring break that we got this year). You'd also get two weeks off as summer break -end of august. This would be all the break that you'd get.

Snow drop- a very interesting question. Well, lemme put it this way- I havent taken my part-2 boards yet. You'd definetely have very little time to study for boards. As for your actual question, there are pros and cons both ways. Yes, being in the school would definetely help. Some of my seniors swear by the questions that they got in the tests at schools being repeated word to word on their board part-2. hope this helps. Please do lemme know if you want me to say anything more in specific about this topic.

Hardwork 80- People from other countries who have been vaccinated with BCG usually show a *false* positive PPD skin test. And, any positive PPD test needs to be substantiated with negative chest xray reports. So as long as you've gotten a chest x ray within the past year and have gotten a clean chit on your PE from your physician, it shouldnt be a problem. I would also suggest you go through my previous thread ( I had started a thread a year back for the NYUCD class of 2007) where I've covered everything that you need as far as medical clearance is concerned.

Oh by the way, some people thought that I was gonna graduate in two weeks. What I was trying to convey was that I would be entering my senior year in about two weeks. I still have another year to go before I graduate.

Shaliraj- Well you could jus come to school in the evening in that case. But, just to let you know.... you are gonna have seminars and conferences apart from the lectures and attendance is mandatory for all seminars and conferences. Also, when you start lab, you're gonna have to put in a lot of extra time practicing and trying to meet your submission deadlines.

Second year is probably one of the toughest years but you dont have to put in a lot of school time. The third year would get overwhelming as you are in clinics and final year is gonna be spent trying to pass the boards etc. Oh by the way, I've heard 2007 is gonna be the last year for the NERBS although at this point in time, it could just be a rumour. New york state is pushing towards having a mandatory one year residency after graduation from dental school ( again could be another rumour). But, even presently, people who've not given the NERBS can still be eligible to practice in New york state by doing a one year residency like the GPR or the AEGD.

what do u mean by last year for NERBS ?r they(ada) putting in effect the
"one common exam for all" concept?

one year residency ,is there fees for that too? :scared: how useful will it be in future to do the 1 year residency?what are the pros and cons of having this change?any comment would be helpful.

thanks in advance.

hi shaliraj..
check this thread out.. its about the common exam one for all(ADEX)... found it in the dental forum:
http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=194938:

hey! as now i guess interview process got over with the end of april lets hope to hear something from nyu

Well, I was jus tryin to say that the NERBS are gonna be replaced. And, as far as NY state is concerned, we hear that NY state proposes a one year internship as a possible alternative to this since this is one of the accepted means by which a person can practice at ny even presently. So, in a nutshell, they are pushing towards a common licensing board or in the other case a dentist who's done atleast one years worth of experience in the form of GPR or AEGD. Think of this as simillar to the one yr internship we all had back home. And no, shaliraj you dont have to pay for the extra yr but would be paid for doing this.

dr. hannibal

Hi Dr Hannibal,
Thanks for your time and all the useful info.
I received the curriculum details/like a rough timetable for the first year at NYU last week and there are no doubts that it is a pretty intensive program.
When do we have to take part-II national boards? In your opinion is it wise to start preparing for them now as most likely there would be a time crunch during the three years of the program. Please advise.
Also this news about the replacement of theNERBS by one year residency,I feel that the students should be informed about it before they enrol for the program as I'm sure many students will have time & finance relted limitations and sudden changes like this can come as an unpleasant surprise. Also Iassume that we will be paid a stipend during the residency, but its going to definitely be very little in comparison to the salary you would earn at a private practice and that matters a lot in those initial years when your goal is to payoff most of the student loans with high interesr rate.
Your opinions and advice is appreciated.
THanks
