NYU D1 Complete! AMA!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
If NYU had somewhat respectable admissions standards there's no way they could fail out that many people. Their average gpa for accepted students is 3.07 which means roughly half of those accepted have a gpa below that. For comparison, Iowa's average incoming GPA is a 3.75.

The 3.07 GPA is for the program for international Dentist aka those who already got a dental degree from international dental schools.

The average GPA for the normal dental program is around a 3.3 from what I remember.

I thought it was a 3.5 for NYU?

Yep. This was a change for some of the courses for D1. Many of D2 courses were moved to D1.

Having one exam is not really an issue. It shouldn't be an issue - why would it? Just study as you should. These courses are not long. But of course, there are students complaining.

What students complain about more is the number of credits assigned to them. Each of them is 1 (neuro was 0.5 until the week of the exam). The workload of embryo was definitely doable. Neuro, though, is a kick in the nuts. Even for one credit, it's A LOT of material. We have a course to evaluate peers - and that's 1.5 credits. It's a joke.

If you study, you'll be fine.

I posted this somewhere else in the forums:

There is a huge revamp in the courses for D1 this year and it's a disaster. Faculties sometimes don't know their own lecture times (ex. there was one lecture at 8AM when the instructor didn't appear to the lecture, lol), courses are dissected and offered as separate courses, etc. The workload and difficulty have definitely gone up at NYU than before.

We have so far confirmed about 40 students who will have to repeat the year (not remediate. they failed the year) and 50+ who will have to remediate a course. These numbers are only up to the end of last semester. This semester will have more, with some of the difficult courses moved from D2 to D1.

Support for dental students is minimal. Overcrowded study spaces. Some faculties think the students are all *****s. The dean of academics, Smithey, is a complete nutcase - she has no respect for the students.

If you are coming to NYU, be prepared. I am not kidding.

OMG lol I heard all about this... do you think NYU Dentistry faculty realize their curriculum change lead to sudden spike in remediation and retake, so they may have to change the curriculum again for the incoming D1 for this Fall by any chance? And since there’s so many people retaking a year, are they studying with the incoming D1’s again? Because that sounds like $$$ + $ lol

Maybe. I doubt it. If they really cared for the students, they would have done something about this already.

Yes, they will be studying with the incoming D1s, if they decide to go back. I know someone who's applying for medical school instead... etc.

I think it'll mean less acceptances due to reserving spaces for these failed D1s coming back. And yes, they have to pay the full tuition for the failed year.

Btw we just had a neuro exam. 1 credit course, 1 exam.

I am preeeeetty sure we added at least 20-30 into the number of fails/remediates. It was difficult.

I would avoid this school.

sadly no. message me, i know dental students/pre dental students love rumors and cannot dictate the truth ever and end up playing telephone amongst 400 clueless souls.

I know enough about nyu from about 2011-present. scandals, drama, etc. I still suggest no one go there. Especially now. I was president of ASDA/involved in the schools student gov and organized dentistry at NYCDS, do not go.

It says I am unable to start a message with you. Can you message me first?

Just stumbled on this thread, and as a D1 at NYU, I have to admit that this is one of the biggest regrets of my life attending this dental school. Everything that has been said in this thread is not a hoax and has been true. It has been absolutely horrendous here! I cannot stress that enough.

I made SDN to primarily warn you of this school and how it has changed so negatively. I would do anything and everything to not attend.

Many won't listen, and will see for themselves. Good luck everyone!

Hey can you message me and give me some insight on why you think such thing about this school? I applied there!

We can only say and do so much, I genuinely believe that all of us D1 students from NYU are doing everything to help new comers and warn on this chaotic situation. If given an alternative option, do not hesitate on taking it and be grateful to have another option.

messaged, we in this together
I did not receive your message probably because how my privacy was set up before. Just fixed it now! Would you mind messaging me one more time please? Thank you!

The change in curriculum has been bad i agree. The academic dean needs to go. However, if you STUDY YOU WILL PASS. Out neuro exam had 3 curves. 3 TIMES the professor curved to help most of us pass. Alot of courses have these extra credit, 10 percent quizzes to help you jump from one grade to the next. But the way the school is organized is a mess i agree

So...the moral of the story is don’t go to NYU. Check.

The academic dean, Smithey, announced that the student representatives giving us reminders of upcoming exams, events, due dates, etc to be terminated immediately because she thinks it is unprofessional.

is that the same as the students who fight to get back points on exams ?

What the hell? It's common for every class to have people give out reminders to classmates.

It’s prob bc her job as academic dean is in jeopardy and she’s just trying to exercise whatever leftover power she has left (aka power-trippin’)—I wouldn’t be too surprised...there are def crazy ppl out there lol...

All NYU schools, including nursing, Langone medical, engineering, undergrad, etc, have closed and gone remote for classes starting tomorrow due to COVID-19.

Except for the dental school, which the dean thought it would be a wonderful idea to keep it open.

Something is seriously wrong with this school.

dude, just do not go to NYU. Want to message me? I bet you I will give you some real knowledge about that place. You will want to message me.
Hi! I would love some real knowledge about NYUCD. Currently in the strug boat.

Yes, can you speak about the suicide of your former dental classmate Gabriella Giachetti? Why did she commit suicide, why NYU swept it under the rug, and how is the school helping current students to deal with this tragedy and to prevent it from happening in the future

Those waitlisted/accepted and have another offers. take any of the other offers - take what others have stated with confidence and absolute certainty. Its time to make wise decisions before its too late.

Idk why you keep saying 650k. Someone coming out of the school with 650k would have to be spending insane amounts of money during school. The tuition with all fees included is 94 per year for NYUCD=376k. There’s no need to constantly be advertising 650k to make the school sound worse than it is. If someone wants to get an apartment and room with someone they’ll be in another 70 grand for all four years. The 650k is an unnecessary statement, for a student to get that deep into debt they’d have to be living the luxury life as a student, which would put them in debt at any school they went to.
376 alone is still extremely expensive, but it’s completely not right to continuously advertise people not coming to the school for a “650k” price tag.
You factor in that accrued interest and the annual 4-7% tuition increase?

@Student Loan Planner, care to weigh in? You see the damage first hand.

Its very close to 650k, unfortunately for someone starting in Fall 2020-Big Hoss is correct. Even if you eat Ramen, you will end up with at least 600k all in including origination fees, accrued interest.
Its financial suicide and basically the only way you're paying it off without living like a slave to the government in terms of paying back loans is by specializing-which will also lead to even more loans unless you do 4 yr omfs.
If you want to a general dentist and only get into NYU dental, reapply and wait for the next year-many people have done this. If you again only get into NYU dental, then pick another career (again if you plan on being a general dentist).

Student loan planner is a genius I follow his articles and have seen podcasts with him. In terms of 4-7% annual tuition increase tuition; for the entering class of 2020 through the entering class of 2024 the tuition has been maintained at 94k fees included. This is by no means a good deal but it also isn’t the 650k people make it out to be, esp if one can save on Living costs or commute and live with a parent. Loans will accrue interest as soon as Dental school starts, but this is the case for any graduate study loans and when ones earning a pay check there’s numerous routes to take to pay these loans. Everybody’s experience will be different, but setting a standard and advertising a 650k price tag just isn’t right or accurate in my opinion.
Student loan planner said he was seeing around $550,000 for the class of 2017 and he now projects it will be around $673,000 for the class of 2023 without any financial help.

It’s funny, It was actually cheaper for me to go to NYU than touro since I can live at home with NYU. Other private schools I looked at had the same/even higher tuition.
