Hey everyone! I'm starting OT school in the fall and wanted to make a thread so that you guys can discuss the application process together and can all follow each other's progress during this process, ask questions, and support each other along the way! I saw a thread with this same idea a few years back and thought it was a really simple way to do just this! I have provided a general outline below that we can all start with. Good luck everyone!

Hey! just wondering Did the schools you applied to not require a cum GPA of 3.0 or higher? or did they still consider your app since your prerequisite gpa was so high? you heard back fast I wish I heard from schools already.. I am worried about my stats lol

ALL the schools I applied for required a cum GPA of 3.0 or higher! I think having a strong prerequisite GPA and a strong personal essay really helped in my case. I also volunteered over 300 hours in 3 different settings and had strong letters of rec from my OTs and professor(all more than a page each) Don't worry too much about stats because some schools take a holistic approach and don't strictly judge based on GPA! Especially, if your stats are close (min science GPA: 2.8+), you might be able to receive some interviews like I did.

Hi this is kind of unrelated but I was wondering what your experience was like at your NYU OT internship. I was looking at the Health Career Opportunity Program at NYU Langone's Rusk Rehabilitation for OT and it sounded similar (like maybe it was the same one lol). But ya I was wondering if you had any insight on the process and how you liked it !

Hi @findingmyway1200 the Health Career Opportunity Internship is the same exact one I was in lol. Honestly I did it in 2019 and it was an awesome experience. So worth applying for, the OT department is so nice and supportive. Just remember to get your hours form signed by the OT Supervisor before it's over. You will most definitely need it signed for your application for OT school.Good luck with everything!!

I sent mine in at the beginning of August! I applied to the Phoenix pathway so it could just be a different timeline. If you check your admissions portal and it still says your application is under review then I think you are still under consideration and they should contact you soon! I heard from an advisor a couple of days after that message on my portal went away. Good luck!

My situation is a bit more unique for Stanbridge because I applied last minute to their Summer 2021 Cycle in April 2021. I got waitlisted then and was in constant communication with their Admissions Director. My application from Summer 2021 automatically rolled over to this cycle, didn't have to interview for the Riverside campus (my interview points were apparently high), and got accepted around the beginning of September 2021. Still waiting to hear back from Loma Linda, which is my top (!) but glad to be officially starting my journey to becoming an OT :) If you have any questions, let me know and I'd love to answer!

I was planning on applying there but I applied to programs that were on a rolling basis first and was going to apply to more if I didn’t hear back from those schools soon. I graduate in December and just got accepted to a program that starts in January so I think I’ll go there :)

Hey! How long was your process for USA? From the time the app was submitted to the time you were accepted.

Hi guys. I just wanted to hop on and say that if you can, avoid going to USC and go to a state school. The price isn’t worth going to a private school. I ended up reapplying to different programs because I didn’t understand the financial burden initially.
Of course, if this is your dream school and you can afford the price tag go ahead!

That sounds easy enough except when your consider the limited number of spots at state schools and the large number of students applying it can be really hard. I can tell you in California it’s harder to get in to CSUDH and SJSU than it is to get in USC. I think very few actually turn down one of the 2 CA state schools for USC

Can I ask if USC offered you any scholarship money at all? I’ve been told they offer descent scholarships. The debt associated with going to grad school is very overwhelming. There’s no easy answer. Apply and pray is my strategy.

I also am interested in USC offering scholarships - I have heard they have many and seem to be one of the only (big and top ranked) schools openly advertising large amounts of scholarship money. For example, Belmont has a total program cost of around 120k for an OTD without ANY financial aid, whereas USC racks up to about 185ishk (not exact) for an OTD, but seems to offer a lot of graduate assistantships and scholarships. To be honest I cannot afford either of those options currently and have applied to both, just hoping and praying for aid, but I would think that some of the USC Scholarships/Job opportunities could bring that price down to nearly that of Belmont. So, just a thought.

For example - the Research Student (2 year program) worker scholarships (linked here: USC Chan Division of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy ) Offers 8 units tuition (about 15k per semester), and a 6,600 per semester stipend. That would bring the cost of tuition and fees down by 15k x 4 semesters - so 60k plus the 6,600 stipend x 4 so plus making 26,400 over the two years, which in that case would cover most living expenses and make the OTD 120k. Just something to think about - obv most people don't get scholarships but that isn't too far off from alot of the other schools I'm considering.

Oh absolutely. I think it’s ridiculous there’s only two affordable options in the entire state of California. I just know that a lot of people like the idea of a big name like USC (like me) and didn’t even consider how expensive it would be long run.

I was offered a 4000 dollar scholarship for the year. All things considering, it made the cost of the entire program plus living expenses go from about 140k to about 132k, lol. Another good option is to apply out of state, which can still be substantially cheaper than a private school in CA.

Hi! I just got my interview with Stanbridge-Irvine campus scheduled for Friday! How long after did you hear back after you interviewed?

Probably Stanbridge University! I am not confident in driving/living in LA for West Coast University (it will be around 2hr commute with traffic). For USC and Loma Linda, I was more interested in a master's program (not interested in research/teaching in the future) so honestly, doing 3 years for a doctorate with the super expensive tuition (~120-145k) is not worth it to me anymore. I talked to countless of OT's and everyone's telling me school doesn't really matter and to go to the cheapest one. With Keck Graduate Institute... well it's a completely new program and it's also a doctorate starting at 120k tuition so I withdrew my application. If cost isn't a issue then I would say research each school's resources, pass rates, and connections to choose whats best for you!

Is there a reason you did not apply to SJSU? Seems like with your gpa and hours you’d have a great shot? The program is excellent and you can’t beat the tuition? Are you just trying to stay in So California? You could also consider waiting for CSUDH for Spring 2023. Seems crazy to pay $100,000 plus when you have 2 great $30,000 options that you should be very competitive for. Also FYI if you’re looking for a doctorate they announced at the last information session for SJSU Doctorate coming spring 2023.

Is there a reason you did not apply to SJSU? Seems like with your gpa and hours you’d have a great shot? The program is excellent and you can’t beat the tuition? Are you just trying to stay in So California? You could also consider waiting for CSUDH for Spring 2023. I am planning at living at home and commuting. All the schools I applied to are within a 40 miles radius. I am hoping to get some scholarships. I prefer a Docturate, so I have the option to teach later in my career.

I am hoping to get some scholarships. Since it will be the first Cohort for the OTD program at Loma Linda, USC and Keck they are more likely to offer scholarships.

I just got the acceptance letter when I opened my portal today! I'm still so surprised right now honestly, like I wasn't expecting to hear back so soon and I did get a C in one of their pre-requisites. But I'm mostly just happy because this was my top school.

Hi thank you so much! for west coast it was an individual zoom interview, maybe 6-8 questions, most were super straightforward and OT related(why do you want to be OT?, define OT, etc.) and some behavioral situation questions! Then she gave me 45 min writing prompt to handwrite at the end. My experience was great because I was interviewed by the Director, Stacy Willis, who was super sweet and encouraging during my interview. Hope this helps and goodluck :)
