Hi all!

I'm a 3rd year planning on going into a rotating internship and eventual surgery residency. I was wondering if anyone has had experiences with Ocean State Veterinary Specialists in either an intern or resident capacity, or knows someone that has. I would appreciate any info!

Thanks y'all!!

Yes, let me message her and see if she would be okay either giving her contact info or receiving your contact info. Give me a few days.

I went there for a 2 week externship and absolutely HATED it. I had planned to use an externship to scope it out (as on paper it was one of my top choices) and then to apply for internship after. I didn’t even apply there.

So, for reference and qualification, I went there in 2020 in the height of Covid and shut downs where all ER’s were struggling major. And obvs everyone’s experiences and opinions are different. But on my externship, I saw it’s by far the busiest ER I’ve ever seen in my life (and I have seen a TON of ERs nationwide- east coast, west coast, Midwest, south). The ER doctors were constantly being rushed by admin and not really permitted to do what they wanted and the nurses wouldn’t keep up. Patient care was truly suffering. The interns, while being told it was like 40% ER, we’re realistically doing 60-70% ER. They all said they were learning a ton, but didn’t have much supervision at all. Every single intern and ECC resident I talked to, when asked if they could go back a year and change their decision said that they wouldn’t go to OSVS.

I have since talked to 3 other critical care residents from different hospitals who all interviewed and all have the same opinions. One of their lead criticalists and head of the internship/residency program is rough and very very hard to work with.

The program might’ve changed but I doubt it. And some people really do love the hospital. But I would never go back.

I interviewed with them, but was unable to visit the site due to COVID.

Definitely hands down the sketchiest interview I had all match season, and hopefully the last of my career. Interviewer was late, left the interview for a significantly long phone call, and was admittant of not reviewing my application packet in the slightest prior to the interview. I understand they get a lot of applicants, but if you're interviewing everyone without reviewing their basic credentials, they are just looking for people with a pulse.

The hypothetical questions she asked me were sketchy, along the lines of "what would you do if you managed this stable case blatantly inappropriately and found it dead in the wards?".

It was clear she was unprepared and disconnected from my interview, when I brought the opposite to the table. Hard pass, it was the only program I did not rank.

Thank you!! That is super helpful. I'm an RI native and have used OSVS during covid on the owner side of things and have seen how it is essentially always busy, so I was wondering how they handled that. It sounds like they don't really handle it. I super appreciate you sharing your experience!

So...as a current intern I disagree. Yes the ER is busy, all ERs are busy. I think this internship provides a lot of structure and support and I am 100% a better doctor for having come here. I have a QOL and genuinely love my colleagues. Everybody loves teaching here so I highly recommend it.
