Since we are going to officially be students in a week, I figure posting in the pod students forum is appropriate😀!!! Anyway, I was wondering if any OCPMer's would be interested in meeting up this weekend...it's the last chance we have before being chained to a book...:scared:

I think a "Welcome Back" party is already planned for the Friday night during orientation. Look forward to meeting you. How are you liking the Cleveland area so far? To be honest, I am surprised that I like it as much as I do.

I've lived in Cleveland most of my life, so I guess I'm kinda used to it 🙂 The winters SUCK here though!!!

Cleveland is pretty awsome. I had no idea how much there was to do there and how cool the people are. Is the party a school function or something separate the students are doing? Also, have you guys purchased any books yet?

I don't wanna hijack your thread but I was wondering if you guys know the status of the new OCPM facilities (ex: is it completely finished/updated). I believe they moved in in late July but did not hear much about it. I saw the independence campus in January and it looked great. If you guys could comment about the new place (building itself, anatomy lab, etc) when classes start up it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks and good luck with the upcoming year!

Sweet!

yes there is in fact a party for the students on friday. i think they are all going bowling. the building seems nice, except for the 72 seat cafeteria, which is nice, except for you cant take food outside that area, and there are close to 130 first year students coming in, good luck finding a place to eat your lunch. and for the faculty and staff..............they are dropping like flies. the best DPM's we had left and went to the VA. it might be great here in a few years once they figure everything out, until then, i wish i could finish the next couple years somewhere else

Are you sure about 130 new students coming in to OCPM? I thought the podiatry organization tells each school the maximum amount of students allowed in each class. From what I understand, NYCPM has the largest "cap" at 126 students. Please correct me if I'm wrong

The administration said that they were capped at 130 people, I don't know if they filled all the billets.

Oh yeah, and it is possible to finish your schooling elsewhere so if you spend your energy changing things you desire to be different you will have less to complain about. Unless you're one of those people that ALWAYS complain no matter what, then I guess it's your bad, I feel sorry for you.

actually tleg, i'm one of the few people at this school who does anything to help fix everything that is wrong with this school. i came here already in love with the people and the school, well that drastically changed. but there are many things that cant be changed. to name one we have an administrator that has a huge stake in the loan company that all the students are told to use, and if you want to change loan companies........good luck

So what's the story with OCPM and the class of 2011? How many students really are there? Any other info would be appreciated, thanks.

i think theres about 114 new students in the class of 2011...

You could learn a thing or two from OCPMOSU. I understand that you love your school, but it doesn't hurt to be critical when appropriate and it really isn't good to make ridiculous claims like your school is the best in the country.

To start, from my understaning you guys graduate around 80 students a year, i.e. ~40 students a lost per class.

its possible... also, some people switch to the 5 year program. don't be one of those people.

how many students did azpod lose last year again?

I was talking to a 4th year and they said only about 80 people were in the class of 2008. Of course, I don't know how many were added by the 5 year program and how many they started with. My comment was only made to show they may start w/ 130 but it does not stay there.

my class started with about 110 and we are down to about 70, and there are currently 114 one of four year students and 14 one of five year students. If you ask me I think the five year program is just another way for the corupt administraion to make more money. this is why we dont get equal treatment with the MD's and DO's, they dont get to take the easy way out (5 year programs), if there is that option for them that is news to me and maybe someone can tell me if that is an option for them. but if we want equal treament we need to have equal standards

no matter what institutions is being discussed, they all have their problems. overall we make our decisions and we should deal with that.

so far my experience ocpm has be positive. its had its up and downs but it has been worth it.

standards do have to be raised though.

the standards really need to be raised. if you dont get into med school or dental school, oh you can still go to OCPM. that should not be that way. we should not be taking the rejects of the other schools. yes there are a large number of people who could have gone to med school but WANTED to be a podiatrist. but there are a number of students who flat out got rejected and knew they could get in here, and they did. i've said it before and i'll say it again, if we want to get treated equally, we must be trained equally. and if you cant get tinto med or dental school, you shouldnt be able to get into podiatry school. i would rather see each school graduate 10 QUALIFIED DPM's every year instead of 80 who should not be allowed to carry a scalpel

rejects of med school/dent school can get into any pod school. its not just ocpm.

Not without a MCAT. OCPM is still taking the DAT. And in my opinion any school that takes the DAT, OAT, GRE or anything other than the MCAT looks desperate in comparison to the programs that have made a stand.

i just meant that dent school is almost getting more competitive than med school and the people who are rejected should still be good enough students to get accpeted to podiatry school, regardless of the means.

im not exactly sure how i stand on podiatry schools accepting the DAT. i did take the dat and the mcat and i felt the mcat was much more difficult and required critical thinking. however, the dat still tested the science background of the individual. i would like to see pod students be required to take the MCAT, but i dont feel that the dat is so far different it shouldnt be acceptable. the GRE on the other hand is a whole other story...

ps- not that kaplan is the best test prep by any means, but i used both the Kaplan MCAT and DAT prep books to prepare and the entire chem, orgo and biology sections were identical

I would agree that there is very little difference, but the reason why the MCAT alone should be accepted is for comparison. While the DAT is similar it is not the same. So to compare student with a 3.5 GPA and a MCAT score A to a 3.5 and a DAT score of A, it is not fair to either student.

With one test comes an equal comparison from student to student and from school to school. When a school says that the average MCAT is #, you know that includes every student in accepted into the class. Therefore students, organizations (CPME, AACPM), and schools can track these classes and possible see trends which can be used to improve the quality of podiatric students.
