Hi everyone. I am not sure if this is the right place for this thread. I will be starting podiatry school at OCPM this fall. does anyone know what are the better apartments in that area. when should i move to that area.
also i was looking at their website and they have mediasite. my friends in the caribbean school tell me that they just watch the lectures on mediasite and don even go to class. do most students at OCPM just mediasite from home?

thanks

Hey podpm! Welcome to OCPM! I am a current 1st year going on 2nd year and would be more than happy to answer some questions you may have, I sent you a private message about some housing around here that may be helpful and feel free to contact me about anything else, also anyone else that has OCPM questions or OCPM housing questions feel free to contact me!!

I'm going to be going to OCPM this fall also!! I'm also starting to look at apartments so I'd appreciate any suggestions/help! I just want a clean, fairy new/nice, and safe place to live in.... that's close to the school, of course. I don't have any pets or family so no restrictions there. 🙂

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Don't listen to the school's recommendation. Parma is a hole. I would stay in Strongsville, North Royalton, or Broadview Heights. All nice areas with a lot of restaurants, shopping, or whatever you want. But keep in mind that the clinics are downtown (although there is a brand new one at school now). So if you want to be close to school and clinic then you need to look at Cleveland Heights or Beachwood area.

lakewood is also a good option
15 mins from midtown clinic
15 mins from school
near the lakewood with metroparks, and is pretty safe
great family environment as well

i'm starting this year too...I signed a lease in North Royalton, I have family in the area and they gave me the advice to NOT move to Parma--I did my own research and found some great apartments. Forrent.com and apartmentratings.com are a great place to start. I have a few restrictions (large dog, I wanted a washer/dryer, etc) and found a decent rent price and pretty decent apartment size with a few hours of work online. Strongsville, North Royalton, Broadview Heights, and Sagamore Hills are all good areas to look.

I'm moving the middle of July, I'm really familar with the area but I would suggest moving at least a week before orientation so that you figure out where everything is. 🙂 only a few more months!

I'm going to be doing a search next weekend for housing. I've narrowed my search down to Strongsville, Lakewood, and Broadview Heights. I am not from the area (raised in Chicago, undergrad in Minnesota) but have looked extensively into these areas and they all seem to offer the safest and more pleasant environment for the next four years. The only problem I see with Strongsville is the commute to Cleveland Clinic third year. But, it might be worth it to live near all of the central shopping in a nice community.

Might wanna look into coventry/cle heights area also. Close to clinics and offers lots to do.

Make sure you consider your commute time. Having lived in several areas around the school, I'd make sure I live as close to the 77 or 480 freeways. Once the snow hits, the commuting time gets very taxing. Independence, Seven Hills, Brecksville, Broadview Heights are excellent areas and are very close to school. North Royalton & Strongsville are great newer areas to live but the drive will kill you. I made that drive my 1st year and moved so I'd not spend so much time in my car! Good luck & welcome to OCPM!

Yes Mediasite is BIG here. Go to class or not is up to your learning habits.

LOL not going to class? Sounds like a great idea so you can miss all the announcements and stuff going on at school. Plus then you can take your board exams a couple of times because you missed so much information given out before and after the record button is pressed. Mediasite is supposed to augment your studying, not take the place of going to class. And you can't ask questions to a video.

That is very true. There will always be a negative impact on you if you don't go to class. However, some people are able to pull it off by staying at home and listening to lectures all day long. Pausing the lecture and rewind when the materials are complicated. In the end, it's up to your studying habits.

A couple things to keep in mind... 1.) Renting a house in the areas 10 minutes or so away from the school in areas like Brooklyn, Brooklyn Heights, Parma, Parma Heights has become exceedingly cheap. The greater Cleveland area currently has 1 out of every three homes listed as vacant and the number of vacants is growing. Meaning you can find a house rental for around $600 - $800 per month as landlords become desperate to make money off of vacant property. Sure you'll need to keep up the yard work but you won't have noisy neighbors to contend with while studying or sleeping and you'll have much more space. 2.) Once in a blue moon do profs ever give out information when Mediasite is turned off. The fact of the matter is that OCPM administration does not allow that to occur. That being said there has been a couple times (2 to be exact) where test/board hints where given out after media site was turned off and Mediasite does malfunction (though there is a backup archive from last year). Just a funny statistic for you to consider... There is one class that I Mediasite every single time. It's the 8am Radiology class. So far it's the only class I have straight A's in. The other classes which I do attend in person every time my grades are considerably lower than that. Just food for thought. So don't let people freak you out about using mediasite. As long as you stay on top of it and set a schedule you'll be just fine.

Important announcements are always e-mailed. There are only a couple times I have encountered extra information being presented before or after recording. And it wasn't even really extra information, it was just TQ's the prof went over. You can always e-mail questions to professors. I've had no problem doing this. Mediasite is used for whatever you want it to be. Get off your high horse. Different strokes for different folks 👍
