I work in a practice with 7 doctors. I am in the process of getting my LORs together. I mentioned to one of the doctors that I wasn't sure who to ask for a letter since I have worked almost equally with all of them. She then offered to write one herself! Then proceeded to tell me to ask the owner for another one since the owner's name is well known at my university. Of course I jumped at her offer because, hey, she offered! 🙂
BUT, in hindsight, I wonder if I did the right thing. I am interested in Food Animal and she is a small animal surgeon (the owner is strictly small animal too). She knows me just as well as the other doctors however and I know she would speak highly of me in a letter and on the phone. I also think she would get feedback from the other doctors before finishing off her letter. The other LA doc that I spend the most time with was out of town when this happened, so I haven't had a chance to talk to her yet.
Do, I take the letters and be grateful? Do I ask for three letters from ONE clinic or is that weird? (I also have three professor letters because I have a lot of research and employment under them).
What do you guys think?

If you don't have another hospital to get letters from, I'd take the two you're planning on and then get a third from the LA vet.

One option is if you apply to a school not in VMCAS and then use one of the letters for that school. This way no one gets butt hurt.
Worked for me.

Both good ideas. I did what SOV did and submitted on of the extra one's through the Atlantic Bridge program.

I know some schools have requirements of how many letters you can have. Maybe say yes to all, but rank them in VMCAS; so only your first 3 (or 5?) will count, and the others will be extras? That way you don't hurt feelings, but the ones you want to count the most will?

Decided to bring it up with one of the vets today (one of the mixed med vets) and she agreed that I needed to use the owner. She also said I should use the small animal vet as a letter writer and that she would collaborate with her to make sure that a LA point of view was used as well. Sort of a "group" letter. She said to bring in my notebook where I have recorded all the stuff I have done and my hours and that they would use that to help write about me!!!!
I think it's going to work out! Waiting to hear from school though to see how many letters I can submit.:scared:
