So, sraj who was your POI? when did they contact you?!! I am freaking out

I received an email this morning from the program secretary inviting me to interview on Feb. 22.

No wonder I haven't been asked out yet ... All this time I thought it was match.com for doctors! slaps head

Empathiosis,
Then allow me to be the first publicly to ask you out! 😍 Of course this in on the condition that you wear the nice twead suit you described on the What To Wear to Interviews Thread which you are afraid to wear to interviews! I am sure others will be asking you out soon - these psychology guys are just shy (not so suave like me😎) and the poster's sex (male or female) is often difficult to determine on SDN unless one is paying attention (I thought Therapist4Chnge was a woman for months on end ). Oh no! Your location is Brooklyn! The BQE, the Belt Pkwy, and the Jackie Robinson are all disasters. Picking you up will be a nightmare! 😱

Actually, you just gave me a radical idea to share with everyone on this Thread. Date someone who has no trouble getting into a Psychology program and who wants to be a professor. Keep dating that person until he/ she becomes a professor and then apply to that school listing that person as your POI! You can break up after you are accepted! It might take along time but from what I hear many people are willing to try anything!

Hi fellow anxious people,

I just broke down and called NYU. They said they will be making decisions tomorrow and that the interview is scheduled for the 22nd of Feb. FYI.

Ahh:idea:

Hello everyone. I hope everyone is receiving relatively good news (I emphasize relatively because I know how dissapointing and frustrating this process can often be).

I have a question regarding interview invites, and the degree to which they improve your odds for admission. Does anyone know what the trend is as far as the number of initial applicants receiving interview invites? Further, if one is invited how much do these odds increase in your favor? I know each school is different and there is no definitive answer to my inquiry, but I was just curious if anyone had information regarding this matter...The particular school in question here is Hofstra, so if anyone knows anything about this procedure, any information you could provide would be greatly appreciated!

I kindly request that you are gentle and considerate with your responses, while also being realistic, as I do not want to give myself a false sense of optimism!

Thanks Everyone,
-Adam

I think I have realized the point of this process. Psychology programs make it really really hard/stressful to get into a doctoral program. By the time you make it in/give up you are in need of mental assistance, ergo they never run out of clientele.

how brilliant and evil.

I really hope their Social program is doing the same. I'm getting antsy...

so, if you have a school that allows you to track your status online, and you know invites have already gone out (but you've not received one) yet your online status is still "complete, in review" do you think that means that you may be sort of wait listed - not rejected out of hand yet in case there is a second round of interviews, or does it mean they just haven't updated yet?

i'm going to guess it could be either, or a heady melange of the two, but i was just wondering if anyone else had info/experience regarding online updates.

This is about Hofstra specifically...I applied there two years ago and was interviewed. I heard nothing afterward and put my deposit in for a master's program. I literally received a phone call ON April 15th from Hofstra, offering admission - clearly they did not receive as many acceptances that they wanted and were probably going through their list of the next people. For other circumstances I turned it down (I didn't really like the school psych aspect) - but the point of this story is that you shouldn't worry if you don't hear back from them right away! You never know what will happen!!

The application process is definitely a pugilistic endeavor.

On-line status check is mainly designed for the application itself (so you know if everything has been submitted). Usually, any on-line updates are done by the general graduate school office. When everything is then handed over to the psychology department, the psychology department takes over in terms of review, invites, interviews, and acceptances. Once the department accepts or rejects you, after time, the information is relayed back to the graduate school which, in some cases, posts an acceptance/ or rejection status on-line. However, usually by the time you read anything else on-line you already know the story from the department. So, no, do not expect any important information such as invites or wait lists to show up on your on-line status. On-line application checks are a waste once you know your application has been submitted.

Recieved a call from the DCT today extending an invite. Interviews are taking place on 2/28. He told me about 15 people are being invited for interviews. Good luck to all who applied!

T4C even got a blackeye from all of the fist flying!

It sure felt like that sometimes!

Actually once I started providing treatment for kids, it got a bit hairy. I got hit by a piece of wood (thankfully it was only a glancing blow), and I had rocks hurled at my head...*that* was a fun day! The girl was bigger than myself, but she had a poor throwing motion so she didn't take advantage of her physical abilities. Research is dangerous too! I also had some pre-schoolers hit me with a flying shoe (they were aiming for another kid and I was caught in the crossfire), etc.

I always joked when I worked at an in-patient setting that some days were a "helmet" day, but in actuality I needed a helmet more when I worked with kids in the school system! 😱

(As an aside, I never felt threatened for my safety or anything, so don't be afraid you'll be put in a dangerous position if you work on-site somewhere, it was more of a random incident that I happened to interrupt.)

Today, I received an invite from University of Memphis counseling psyc. program via snail mail. The date on the letter was Feb. 1st. The interview is on Feb. 22nd.

I have a friend who received an email invite from the UNT counseling psyc. program. I think he said the interview date was Feb. 29th. I, unfortunately did not get an invite there (but I'm still hoping that I'm on the waitlist).

So... it looks like some people have started getting invites from GWU. When I started to freak out that I hadn't heard from them either way yet, my coworker told me that schools don't always contact everyone they're interviewing all at once. Is that actually true? Or is he offering me false hope? 😕

If he's right, anyone know how big the window is for hearing from schools that don't call all potential interviewees at once? And will they send me an email if I'm officially not invited?

Also... any idea when BU's going to start contacting people?

I also just received the Miami Counseling interview call (although I think the actual interview day is the 29th).

Just a side note- As a second time arounder I know how disgustingly stressful the process is, but NO one should feel out of the game at this point in time. I heard nothing until this week and now have my first interview on Monday (yes, only like 4 days notice!). So while it is good to have alternative plans (my biggest regret the first time around), it is certainly too early to throw in the towel!!

i just got an interview invite from a scholl that's been on the board for almost a week, so there is still hope!👍

GWU (both Psy.D and Ph.D) is apparently not done yet; however, my apparent non-invited status for the Psy.D is probably a blessing in disguise as I've decided recently that I'm no longer quite as thrilled with the overly obsessive psychodynamic focus (for my taste, at least) the program has.

which school is that? Because I still have some hope in a school that was posted last Friday🙁

My husband is going to be at your interview, he got the invite today. Who is your POI?

I e-mailed about the Cognition and Perception program yesterday . . . no response!
the NYU C&P program won't tell you anything but if you didn't get an invite by now... you won't. everyone has already been contacted. sorry 🙁

Is that true for social as well?

i'm not as sure about social but i'm pretty sure they are having their open house this week or possibly next... but nyu definately will NOT tell you anything about it over the phone or e-mail.

Hi all

I have a not so quick question for yall. Have any of you ever been contacted by a prof who will be interviewing you individually (*after* the invite has been extended by the secretary, before the interview weekend) with fairly detailed information about their research area (ie: specific long term project info) as well as pretty solid info about them (ie: full profile, CV, resume, etc)? The weird thing here is that this person was not my POI, I didn't request any info from this person, and, honestly, was completely unaware about this person up til now (kind of a good thing I was contacted b/c this one is an even better fit and I would much rather work with this one rather than the original POI). It just seemed kind of odd to be contacted out of the blue like that from a (at the time) random prof. Does this normally happen? What, if anything can/should be read into it??

Just a guess, but since you say he's a better f it and you would much rather work with him, perhaps the people on the admissions committee realized that from reading your statement and seeing your experience and decided to act on your behalf. It sounds like a great opportunity!

Your post made my day. I laughed and smiled and laughed some more ... Why would you let a little traffic get in the way of true love? 😍

Hi everyone,
I have been noticing more and more that people are posting requests that essentially discount what others have to say by asking them not to talk about it, or to get back on topic...the whole point of this is to vent and discuss matters of getting interviews...so when people post their thoughts, they are using this for what it should be used for. How can everyone really feel good telling people what they have to say is not important?
Everyone has a point of view, and we wi
ll not al
l agree, so there is no need to argue, put down, or discourage others from posting.

We are supposed to be here for each other, right?

While those who got in the first time may not know how you feel, I disagree that they can't offer decent advice (but note my bias as one who got in the first time). You say that they did not have to "struggle or improve" but saying so is being ignorant of what they went through, just like they may be ignorant of what you went through.

I started researching this process my freshman year and worked since then to improve my application. I worked for three years doing research at three different universities, I gained clinical experience in the summers, I studied my butt off on the GRE, etc. I can only speak for myself but saying that I have no idea what it is like to struggle and improve I believe is ignorant, just like I am ignorant of your situation.

I think those who are currently students in PhD programs, regardless of when they got in, can offer some solid advice on what to expect, what professors are looking for, and how to get in. This is especially true since many of us have talked with our grad school advisors and know what they are looking for in applicants!

I do agree that anyone who is in a program regardless of how they got there is an asset to describing the program and what to expect. I probably feel that they cannot offer much advice on how to get in because I was doing research in a lab with 4 other good friends of mine since I was a freshman, they all started after me and were second and third authors on my posters and even my one manuscript. We studied together, and worked our butts off, staying up all night, and they all got in and I did not. 2 of them graduated wither their phds this year. We all stopped taking a few years back when they kept looking at me with pity and their advice started to sound like they were telling me to find another career because I was not good enough for the one they got. Along the way, they could not tell me how to improve, because my app was really better except for the GRE, hence, I was very disgruntled. This is not meant as an argument, simply to elucidate for those on the site who may have taken offense at my comment. I support everyone, really it was not meant as an insult.

Hi,
I was one of the ones who received an interview for Clin. PhD at GW. It came on 1/29 and asked that I respond by Feb. 5, and that if I could not come, someone else would take my slot.
So, I would guess that GW may be considering a second round of interview invites right now, so don't lose hope.
(The email was pretty general and not from my POI but from the DCT, so I would guess that the first round of invites went out at the same time.)

Shut up.

JUST KIDDING. I agree, it's pretty annoying. This site is to help each other out. If you don't like what people are posting/talking about - then don't read it. Geez.

Hi. I know Binghamton and UMass Boston are posted as having invited, but as far as I know my POI hasn't invited anyone yet. If you wouldn't mind sharing, has anyone been invited by Romanczyk (Binghamton) or Carter (UMass)? I'd really appreciate it! 🙂

I just got a call from a program admin to let me know I was invited to interview with them. It seems they are interviewing people over the next two weeks (Feb. 11-22 excluding President's Day).

I am waitlisted at three schools:

Miami Ohio
Depaul
Bowling Green

Does anyone know my relative chances? Or is it a formality before rejection.

How do you know when you are waitlisted? Do they call you? Did you call them?

I know some people have gotten rejection letters from some schools but I have not, but have not been offered an interview either. Is that when you assume you are waitlisted?

THX

how do you know that you've been waitlisted? did they contact you with that info, or did you call/email them after invites went out to see where you stand?

if so, i wonder if i'd want to find out. right now, if i don't hear from them, i try to get comfortable with the fact that i won't get in, but not totally squash all hope.

To be honest, my anxiety got the best of me and I called the graduate secretaries at each school. DePaul actually had sent out an email, but had a wrong email address. They resent it after I called.

Miami and BGU didnt explicitly say I was on a waitlist, but said they were still reviewing my application/making a decision. And I know their invites have already gone out, so for those two I am just assuming...

i see, that makes sense.

FromTheHip, love you icon! that movie still vaguely holds up!

Traditionally the "Interview Invite Thread" is meant for people to know who is sending out invites, interview dates, and is a comprehensive listing of up to date information. Venting and what not is best done in another thread, so as to not derail important information that may get lost in the shuffle. It isn't that we want to tell people not to share, but to share in a thread where a proper discussion can happen and not bring another thread off topic.

eep! good luck! i applied there too but right on the deadline... i hope their interviews are spread out! lol

I saw on the boards a while ago that people have gotten status updates from Yale.....how do you know if you are out of the running? I haven't gotten anything yet, but haven't heard about interviews either. Did people hear directly from them or am I just the only one who doesn't know how to check status online?

You should ask your relative status on the list (i.e high, low). You will know if you are waitlisted, the school will tell you. You should not assume you are waitlisted unless told so.

Your chances depend on how many people are in front of you on the list.

I don't really know when they will have sent out all of their invites. There is a possibility that they will interview after the 22 (you never know), but the only options she gave me were for Feb. 11-22.

My husband is going to be at your interview, he got the invite today. Who is your POI?

My persons of interest are Matthew Martens and Suzanne Lease; I hope things go well for your husband at the interview. Who is his POI?
