Anyone got any suggestions for what aspects to hit on for Georgetown's essay? I've looked around and I can't really find too much to write about in terms of why I want to go to school there. My reasoning has kinda been that they have a large class size and I am competitive there, but I don't think that's what they want to hear. I'm looking for strengths of the school and appealing aspects. The MSAR and the website don't offer to much information on either of these, and the school is unranked by US News so I can't use that as a source. Plus all the threads regarding Georgetown on these forums seem to be dogging the school for issues they've had in the past.

Either way I've gotten about 2500 of the 5000 character limit, but i'd like to write a little bit more before submitting.
A lot of people have said that if you can't find a real reason you want to go somewhere, you should not apply there. If you're not interested in SOMETHING about the school other than "I'm competitive there," you may not be happy there. Of course, this is not MY belief necessarily, just what I've heard.

I want to go to school there because they have a medical school and I stand a chance to get into it. I'm a California resident with an average GPA, good MCAT, and decent EC's. The only thing necessary for me to be attracted to a school is that I have a chance. But that really doesn't convey the right message to them.

If you can't find anymore good reasons, then you shouldn't try and force it. Besides, 2500 characters is sufficient enough for a "why this school" essay.

For Vermont, they ask about speeding tickets . . . is "failure to adhere to a clearly marked sign" the same thing? I was speeding, but the cop didn't bust me for "speeding", but rather for the aforementioned charge . . . cheaper ticket, and no points on my license.

So do I have to list this? It's technically not a speeding ticket . . .

Anyone complete at Iowa yet? My rec letters have been posted through VirtualEvals for a while now, not sure how long it takes them to process it...

This is probably a silly question, but on the Dartmouth paper secondary, their instructions start out with "Please type or word-process your responses to these questions...". Does this mean we can't just fill out the form in pen? I plan to type out their essay questions on separate paper, but I feel like the rest of the form would be easiest filled out by hand. Maybe I'm just reading too much into their directions, what did the rest of you guys do?

Woot!!! Got Drexel and there is no Essays =P

Woot!!! Got Drexel and there is no Essays =P

Yeah, after ~15 other secondaries (almost all of them having multiple essays), receiving Drexel's yesterday was probably a top ten moment of my life.

Joking. Kind of.

complete at pittsburgh, yay! I guess they are now DLing letters.

Still waiting for completeness from AECOM, Columbia, Harvard, Northwestern, UCLA, UCSD, and Rush (although I only submitted yesterday) but being complete at 18 schools isn't too bad.

I got Dartmouth's as well. I just went to their secondaries site and typed my responses on the website. Then I printed off the filled-out secondary and sent it in via snail mail. I think it's a lot neater this way, though it certainly wastes that nice green paper on which they print the secondary. 🙂

is in - its an email invite.. no real essay questions unless you have gaps in education experience...

any OOS applicants heard from UW yet? I got their "Initial Letter" acknowledging receipt of my AMCAS on July 6th, but haven't heard anything since...

You may want to specify that you mean the University of Washington with that question...

You probably know this, but Washington is a very difficult school to get into OOS if you aren't from Idaho, Montana, or Alaska...

Just got NYMC and that was the fastest I have ever spent $100...well, sorta.

i wonder if its a negative to not have any relatives who went/work there

but yea, $100 = gone in 2 minutes

They have 10,000 applicants... how many ppl do you think have relatives that went to, or worked at NYMC? I'm sure it's a mild positive if that's the case, but otherwise it's probably not a big deal.

Has anybody received SUNY Upstate's secondary login and password recently? I've been verified for two weeks and haven't heard a peep from them.

ive been verified since mid-june and I havent heard from them either... hopefully soon though!!

This came up in part 1 of this discussion thread, but it seems like no one got an answer from Columbia about the discrepancy between their online form and when you preview their app in PDF. Basically on the site it asks you to list how many years of coursework you will complete prior to Sept 2007, but in the preview it asks prior to Sept 2008. Makes sense to ask for 2008 since that's the year we'll be enrolling, but I just wanted to be sure.

I emailed them last week, and from what I've been seeing, they either never get back to you or take super long to reply. Has anyone else asked Columbia about this, and whether they want 2007 or 2008?

Thanks!

I remember reading someone's post after an admissions person at Columbia had gotten back to them regarding this question. They are aware of this problem and said it doesn't matter how you answer it. Put it for either 2007 or 2008, it won't make much of a difference.

Columbia Secondary Application

4. About how many hours per week, if any, did you spend in work for which you were recompensed during the college year?*
LIMIT WRITING TO 200 CHARACTERS. Do not use return or enter.
5. What sort of work did you do (include summer employment)?*
Enter your response in list format using commas. LIMIT WRITING TO 1100 CHARACTERS. Do not use return or enter.

Ok, so basically if you only worked during the summer, leave question 3 blank and answer question 4, right?

Do we need to include the dates, hours of employment, etc. for the summer employment in question 4?

Congratulations!

finally received drexel
no additional essay 👍

Does anybody find the Vermont secondary a little odd in the "Pick, which classes YOU consider to meet our minimum requirement" question. Is this a question to see if you know how to read directions. Should you pick the course if it's on their "Recommended List?" I only ask because on their mini AMCAS course list they have things like "Yoga" on it and are missing courses like "Sociology." They don't have a math requirement, and yet those things are on my list....very peculiar...if I answer the question literally then I will only list a year of bio, chem, o-chem and physics...

Am I the only one who still hasn't received Drexel's secondary? Should I be worried?

Mt. Sinai has a status page? And that's a really early submission... I didn't even get the e-mail until July 18th.

Oh my bad, I thought you guys were asking about Pittsburgh. I called Mt. Sinai on Monday to find out I was complete. Their designated status check days are Monday and Wednesday afternoons around 1-2 in the afternoon I believe.

If I haven't heard yet from a school that screens pre-secondary, would it be a good/bad idea to call and ask about it? I'm referring to Wayne State, if that matters. If I do call, is there any chance they'd tell me if I'm going to get a secondary, or are they pretty much going to tell me to wait and see? Anybody know?

One school let me know and one didn't...just depends on the school or who answers, I guess. Probably couldn't hurt as long as you're polite. (Not that you wouldn't be.)

Kecs, you don't have to post it in every admissions thread you run into. The invite thread (as opposed to two secondary thread) would be appropriate enough.

And you just said you haven't received a secondary yet and were wondering if you would?

i apologize in advance... i have a ******* question about the nymc status page. am i complete if it says:

"Secondary Application
Your verified AMCAS application was received.
A unique Login ID and Password to complete your secondary application were sent to you via e-mail on 07/26/2007.
Your application fee of $100.00 was received on 07/26/2007.
Letters of Evaluation Received
In order to view your received evaluations your secondary application must first be processed by the Admissions Office."

or do they mean that my LORs haven't arrived yet? 😕
thanks guys

And you just said you haven't received a secondary yet and were wondering if you would?

You should call. I didn't hear from Loyola for a long time and I got worried so I called. It turned out they had sent me a secondary some time back. I guess it got lost in the mail or something...

I'm just worried about how to word the question. I don't want to come off as assuming I will get a secondary.

Yes young lady.

Nevermind my previous post. I just called the office and they said "As of today, it was posted that they are no longer considering your application. A letter was sent out in the mail today." 🙁 I wonder if the girl felt bad at all saying that to me. Especially when my tone went from hopeful to completely dejected. I'm really upset about this. I was hoping to at least receive a secondary from Wayne State. I'm an in state applicant. If they don't want me in state, I feel like I don't have much chance anywhere else. This sucks a lot more than the other rejections I received.

And you just said you haven't received a secondary yet and were wondering if you would?

Both of the schools had notified me previously that they received my AMCAS. About two-three weeks later I called and said something like, "I received an email X weeks ago saying you received my AMCAS. I'm just calling to inquire as to my status and if I may be able to provide any additional materials." (Something like that...I'm nowhere near that eloquent.)

I wouldn't ask if you're going to receive a secondary. Ask about your status and you might get additional info. One school told me I would be receiving a secondary soon (EVMS) and the one that didn't tell me anything sent me one a few days later (VCU).

Hope that helps.
