Today I received my first interview invite!!! 😀😀😀
When I called to schedule it, I was so excited, I left my name, where I worked, and that I was calling to schedule an interview. In the middle of leaving the message, I realized that I wasn't at work, and this wasn't a work related phone call. With that, I started to stutter, said I am so sorry, and hung up!
I WAS SO EMBARRASSED!!!

Has anyone heard from or have any info on Wasington State or New Mexico?

For those of you who interviewed with Emory, I'm not sure how much info they told you while you were here, but I just wanted to let you know that they're not planning on making final decisions until the end of the month/early next month. Just a heads up. 🙂 I also don't think they even know yet how many students they are taking...

The on-site interview dates for Univ. of Washington at Seattle are Feb 26, 27. I received an invitation yesterday.

Just to add another detail, the grad coordinator said "The child clinical area has identified a few individuals to invite for interviews, which are scheduled for the 23rd. They have already invited these people, so at this time they are waiting to see how these interviews go before they decide if they need to continue looking further"

No news yet from WSU. I called the department last week and they were kinda vague about when invites would be sent out. The secretary was nice and said they would be going out soon, but didn't give any kind of timeframe. Since the interviews are on March 6th, it can't be much longer.

I just received an interview invitation from Seton Hall University for their Counseling Psychology Ph.D. Program!!

Interview Date is Friday, February 27th🙂

Jon

Congrats! The date was posted on their website earlier this week and I was wondering about the invites.

Oof, that sucks because I haven't heard anything yet. Thanks for the update, though 😀

I see others have also heard from Stony Brook's and GW's clinical Ph.D. programs now. I got a phone interview invite from my POI at Stony Brook on Feb. 9 and a mass email in-person invite from GW's DCT on Feb. 10.

I haven't heard from UVA's grad school of arts and sciences but see someone else got an interview invite (if I'm remembering correctly, that's the first invite to visit the campus that's been posted about).

I was excited to hear back from a lot of the schools I applied to, but the more I find about, the more I realize that my chances of actually getting in are still not very promising based on the numbers that are invited to interview. One school mentioned that they interview around 80 and end up admitting 12, another school is interviewing 30 for 4 spots, etc. Is anyone else feeling discouraged about these prospects?

Also, I'm worried that if I'm very honest about my interests and where they might diverge from my POI, someone who portrays their interests as matching up exactly with that faculty member will end up with the offer of admission.

Sorry for the rant...

Not every POI wants people whose interests match exactly for what it's worth. It varies a lot professor to professor. Some are looking for research clones of themselves more or less, but some seek out a more diverse lab, and actually want students who overlap but also bring something new to the table. If you want a sense of how your POI functions, see if they provide info on their current grad students (some have lab websites with it) and dissertations they have advised, and also check papers they have authored, particularly ones they are second author on, which may be grad students' work. If you see a variety of topics, I wouldn't assume some divergence is necessarily bad thing, and coming in with ideas and interests instead might be in your favor. Good luck!

I agree -- the number of people invited to interview has been a bit intimidating. At one of my interviews, my POI was interviewing 8 people for 1 spot. But I also agree with cardamom and I can't stress enough how important it is to PREPARE for interviews.

Based on the four interviews I’ve been to this past week (two of which have led to offers at this point), here are my thoughts: Potential mentors are looking for mature, intelligent people who can articulately talk about their past research and about the research they hope to conduct in grad school. It seems that in most cases at clinical Ph.D. program interviews, Professor X is looking for someone who knows a lot about the research he/she has done and who is interested in that research, BUT Professor X isn't looking for a mini-clone of him/herself, but rather someone who will contribute valuable independent project(s) or at least a unique new angle on his/her ongoing research. They want someone who has his/her own ideas.

My advice is to be prepared to talk about a specific project, or at least a specific area, you'd like to pursue in grad school. This shouldn't be the exact same thing your POI is doing, but it also shouldn't be completely disconnected from their research. For example, if your POI studies aggression in second grade classrooms, you might say you'd like to focus on nonverbal aggression. To be super-impressive, you could describe how you might conduct a study of nonverbal aggression. You wouldn't want to say you'd like to study sleeping patterns or binge eating.

I just got an email from TC clinical so I guess they are still inviting people 🙂

i feel you. what a field we're in.

I think this is mostly good advice - you definitely don't need to come in as a clone. Although good jumping off point is using the POIs type of research and identifying what interests you and how you might go about taking a piece of it in a different direction (really, you are a puzzle piece that makes the lab up as a whole). Looking at the currents grads dissertations is a good thing, but don't weight it too heavily.. the reason I say that is sometimes students start to diverge during grad school. It's almost always allowed, but sometimes at a cost. It is more tolerated when the student is driven and productive (productive meaning publishing, posters, etc). Also in some cases (like me) a student may have switched advisors partway through the program and their research may not match their advisor's due to this reason. Sorry, there are just so many "depends".. some PIs have very encapsulated labs, and some have many types of programs going on. So Cardamom's advice is still quite good, just consume the info with some caution.

I know those are like the holy grail for interview weekends.

True enough. I think part of the reason is our internship match days this year are Feb 20 & 23... too much stress do to both the coming in & the going out at once! 🙂

Interview invite via email from POI today for 2/23 or 2/24. woohoo!

I just got an invite to Pacific University (oregon). Funny thing is that I was calling to check the status of my application because since I hadn't heard anything I figured it got rejected. The admissions counselor told me they had sent an email last week inviting me. I'm glad I called because I never got the email. It didn't go to my junk/bulk mail or anything. And I've been checking ALL my email folders religiously. So I guess the moral of the story is that as much as I hate calling the department to ask about apps, sometimes it is a good idea.

I have to second this - it happened to me at a different school!

Is it okay to check with departments a few times? I contacted departments a couple weeks ago. They got back, but I haven't heard of any decisions since. When would a good time be to bother them again, if at all?

Just got a phone call from Northwestern Feinberg, I am on the waitlist for the interview. I've never heard of this before, but I don't think it's too promising. Does anyone know how many people they've waitlisted, or how many they're interviewing? Anyone who applied there last year have any words of wisdom?

Has anyone heard from or have any info on Wasington State or New Mexico?

I got an email from my POI at WSU on 2/5 to set up a phone interview. She said she would let me know soon if I was going to be invited out to interview...

Hey everyone:

I apologize for the list not being updated. I am trying to post the updates but for it won't let me since the text has become too long. I'm trying to figure it out so hang tight!!!

🙂

A few more places where I am interviewing that were not mentioned yet:

Adelphi University PhD clinical psychology

Alliant, SF, PhD clinical psychology

University of LaVerne, PhD clinical psychology

I wish I could get into a fully funded program, but did not do well on my GRE. Only my safety schools called me :-(

These are my stats graduate psychology GPA 3.85 (research MA program), undergrad GPA 3.3 (general) and 3.8 psychology--- my general GPA is low, but I went to Yale, and had a hard time my first year. My GRE is 800 even-- I guess I do not test well. However, I have done a great MA thesis (and am seeking publication) and worked in the psych dept at a state hospital for 4 years.
I guess I should be happy to get in anywhere....I am just scared of the debt!!

Does anyone who got an invite at Stony Brook mind PMing me with their POI? Thanks!

I know it's hard waiting, but I'd resist the urge to calll. I've heard program assistants badmouth students who call them numerous times to check on what's going on. They may assume you are over-anxious and cannot tolerate the waiting process. Be patient, and call if you feel you must!

Good luck everyone.:luck:

Do they conduct phone interviews prior to extending invites to the interview day? Their website says invites will be sent out the third week in February.

Yep. They're conducting some this week, but I don't think being passed over for a phone interview excludes you from being offered an in-person interview (or vice versa). I'm not 100% on this last part, however.

I can see this being the case - but when I've called programs, I almost never give my name. I have called and just asked if invitations have been sent out.

I had mailed these to the List, but since there is technical difficulty experienced by Lucyguard, I will post them here in case anyone needs the information.

1. University at Buffalo, SUNY - Ph.D. Counseling and School Psychology, interview date Feb. 20th (not sure of other dates), via e-mail.

2. University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, Developmental Science and Cognitive Psychology Ph.D.'s in Experimental Psychology Department. Phone interviews weeks of Feb.9th and Feb. 16th., via e-mail followed by phone.

Thanks for sharing giantsteps!! I've edited the list in a thousand different ways but the fact is: we have a record number of schools/programs!!! It's awesome but it just won't allow me to update it. I'll let you guys know as soon as I figure something out!

hi guys,

has anyone else heard from Adelphi? it looks like there was just one post on Tuesday. I also wonder if they have altrnative dates...

Email invite from Program Secretary for an interview at St. John's clinical psych PhD program. Interview dates are 2/27 and 3/2.

And I am officially done waiting for interviews! Nice feeling, except the whole waiting for acceptances thing. 🙄

Has anyone received an email from Nova or Howard or Jackson State either yesterday or today? I've pretty much given up on Nova... 🙁

Anyone hear from NYU Steinhardt?

Email from dept. Interview either Feb. 27th or March 2nd.

Uh ohh I think I'm going to have to change my sdn screen name to "St. John's REJECT"... hoping they're not done... but congrats and good luck of course!!!!!!

ST John's guys, I'm assuming you were both GENERAL (not CHILD TRACK) right?? Not sure how this would help me but...

Hey , long time lurker, first time poster. I caved and emailed some programs (all clinical) I have not heard back from. Here is what I've gotten back so far:

URI - Invited have still been going out this week. She didn't seem sure that they would be finished this week (as they were supposed to have been last week).

Syracuse - Extended some invites, but still reviewing applications. Applicants should here in the next couple of weeks.

UIC - All invites extended.

SUNY SB - Applications still being reviewed through mid March.

U Washington - Some Adult Clinical faculty have extended invites, but not all. She was the most helpful and informed me that neither of the two POIs I specified on my app have begun extending invites.

I'm still waiting to hear back from UMBC, but probably won't until at least Monday, so I thought I'd post this info now. Hope this helps! Good luck everybody :xf:

I received an invitation today (2/13/09) via email from the program secretary to interview with St. John's University in New York for the PhD Clinical Psychology program on either Friday Feb 27th or Mon March 2nd.

Does anyone know how many people St. John's is inviting for interviews?

Also, has anyone else besides that one post heard from Adelphi? I am confused as to why he/she heard from a POI as when I emailed professors there last semester, they all told me students weren't picked by POIs, but rather were accepted as a class of students and mentors were assigned later.

Every professor I have spoken with at Adelphi also told me that they select students as a whole group not based on research interests...also I spoke with the DCT today and he said that as of Wednesday afternoon professors were still reviewing files and he had hoped to have them back today, but had not yet received them (this was later in the afternoon today).
