I am not an IMG but would say you should keep hope up for now. I know it's hard. Period. And it's harder for IMGs.

I would say, look to see if there are any other programs in less popular geographies that are known to accept IMG and consider applying to more programs (if financially possible).

This process can be very difficult. Heck, we are all going through it but have to keep you head up and keep hope up until it's really too late. I dont think it is yet!

I dont have any good feelings about my chances this season. Being a foreign grad, I already know its an uphill battle. I have maximized the limited research resources my program offers, and I know if I was at any other place with the amount of effort I have put in I would have 1 interview by now I feel. Anyways, best wishes for the ones who did get interviews, and please do share any tips/advice on what the rest of us can do.
Anyone know about a Plan B for entry to GI?

I am a current applicant but not GI side. So I really dont know a whole lot about tips/advice to get GI. But I am touched by your post here . While I see that other candidates have gotten quite a number of IV, I still think it is too early to finally throw in the towel like I guess you are doing. It is still mid-August, you never know what will happen by end of the month or by September.
Did you apply widely? I know that IMGs usually apply to at least 20+ places to be able to boast of about 10-12 IV ( I stand to be corrected).
I also suggest that you could try looking beyond your program. If they dont have much to offer in terms of research, can you attach yourself to a mentor in a bigger (closeby center) and get some quality research done? I know people that did it and got great letters. Somehow as an IMG, you just have to do the "extra" thing to make yourself look good on paper.
I feel ya, but still too early to FINALLY give up.

I forgot to add the smileys .........just to brighten your day!!

It's still early in the process...don't get discouraged. It isn't easy to match into GI and once match is complete I'm sure there will be plenty of people willing to give advice (myself included if I match).

Thanks for the encouraging words 🙂🙂🙂🙂 I am trying to tell myself that its still early in the process, and I just hope the silence doesnt mean quiet rejections. I have applied to 35 programs all across the country. I am not giving up, but just want to be realistic and think about other things I can do in the interim. My program doesn't have a GI fellowship, and this is making it harder from my side. Its just that everyone has research, everyone has case reports, so I know all the applicants are of the highest quality and it just hurts when a couple of rejections come in.

Hepatology fellowship for an year may help u in getting into GI fellowship for the next year ...

Is banner health in phoenix the same as VA in phoenix. I merely ask b/c I got an interview today from Phoenix VA healthcare system. Is this baner health or something completely different?

Like I earlier mentioned, I am not applying to GI. So you need to sprinkle some NaCl to whatever I say here.
1.If one can afford it, I think 35 programs for an IMG applying to GI may be on the low side ( except if you have a good CV). I would have pushed it to about 50-60 since you are willing to go to any part of the country.
2.My friend who is an IMG marched in Mayo GI but she had to do bench research while also doing an original prospective study which she eventually presented at a national meeting. I doubt if case report means a lot these days for a fellowship like GI (maybe that's why I did not apply to GI!)
3.If your program does not have GI fellowship, then you definitely need an outside mentor you can work with and get some impressive stuff done.
4. I would still end with this note: it is not yet too late in the season to start getting IVs. Nothing is impossible.

Yeah, I don't know what's going on. I'm an AMG, no invites yet either. However, I think most of the invites should come out this week, expanding through end of August. Majority of programs interview in October and September.

If you're an IMG, you should be applying to more programs than AMGs. The PD at my program gave honest advice to our applicants -- the ERAS stats objectively show AMGs have a 71% chance of matching, while IMGs have about a 50% shot. Again, there are just stats without subjective information about recommendations or residency performance.

Hi Bile duct not to discourage you but To correct your PD numbers, according to NRMP stats for GI (table 2) for 2012 only 70 (18%)positions out of 399 were given to Non US international graduates and if you want to add US International graduates then add 37 (9.6%) positions so a total of 107 positions (27.6%) out of 399 were given to IMGs (All US and non US).

I am still dreaming that I am carrying an endoscope on my shoulder but can not get a position to start using it. Applied X 3 now to more than 80 programs each time.
Did I do research? Yes I did Masters in Research and with 2 good manuscripts published and many posters >15.
Since I am doing this for years now........I think there is a trend in selecting most of the applicants by programs.....just visit each program's Fellows page and you will have a little idea who is taking whom!

I think we all IMGs need to do research on how to improve an IMG chance to get into a GI fellowship? And what are programs really looking for? Whom matched with what program and why? These are just 399 positions it is not tough to get these stats.
I am frustated with this selection process......but still hope and still dream that one day I will ultimately use my dream endoscope:laugh:

I agree with you 100%. Basically, there are just about 107 seats for IMG's. How about an IMG with the Green-card????

I think the importance of letters is underestimated. I have heard from multiple PDs that LORs are paramount. Not b/c they want to read glowing praise about you, but that they regard highly letters from colleagues they know or are familiar with. This favors AMGs at more well known programs (in general). I have seen more than one IMG match after doing a GI nutrition fellowship year at a larger program. This gets them the letters they need from key faculty.

I think the two most important factors for IMGs to get IVs are LORs and research experience. However, to get matched in GI program, it is also important which residency program are you coming from. I missed my chance last year with a decent number of IVs, part of it was being from a community program. For IMGs, this is an uphill battle, sad but true!

Is anyone on here a D.O. at a community hospital (that has a fellowship)- a good amount of research/pubs/posters/institutional service. I think Im probably facing a similar uphill battle as IMGs. Any thoughts???

I'm really hoping for texas interviews...good to know that they're starting to send out invites. Anyone going to Vegas in October for ACG?

Nalbs, this pretty much describes me. University affiliated community hospital. 2 interviews so far, still hoping for more in the coming weeks.

Right off their website...
How many slots are available?

Each year we offer 1 position. For 2013 we anticipate one available slot.

Hey bile duct - that's for their research pathway.. I think they have 3 or 4 slots for their clinical pathway.

They take 5 each year, 1 research and 4 clinical, so spots are there for those that applied.

sorry, i stand corrected. i had done a quick skim before applying.

Yeh Baylor in Houston has 4-5 spots. Baylor in Dallas (?community program) has 2 spots.

Hey everyone,
I just spent 30 minutes reading all the posts!! Feels great not to feel alone in this.

Briefly, IMG, green card, Chief resident, 3 publications, 2 submitted, 3 abstracts (one ACP winner), and 3 ongoing projects one of them prospective trial in GI, and good letters!!
applied to 54 programs: 4 rejections so far (UVA, UMIssouri, Uwash, Mount Sinai)

Let's not loose hope it's still a bit early!!

Good luck everyone!

Yes, Good Luck everyone and best wishes both AMG & IMG's! 👍
It looks like we may hear more from the so far silent programs in next 2 weeks, hopefully.

That's encouraging! My hospital is also university affiliated. Obviously our chances are best at our own institution but it's nice to have a chance to see other places. So far I've only heard from mt Sinai. (no interview obviously!)

"I won't be taking my talents to South Beach"...University of Miami rejection

Rejection from Miami too

Do any of you apply to the university of South Florida?

Rejection from the U as well. Didn't expect that to be my first rejection, especially not having heard from places like Mayo where people have already been turned away. They can have their hurricanes and scandal ridden football program for themselves anyway!

Add my name to the list of rejections from university of Miami

I forgot to add interviews I had gotten earlier. Interviews at VCU and Baylor (Houston).

U Miami rejection too, we should join and have a drink guys! no good news

Hi Everyone -

I am new here, no luck with just William Beaumont IV so far. I have one program that has not even downloaded my application yet (applied in the first week). One of my friends is in the program and he says that they pretty much have always given internal candidates, even though they solicit outside applications. Can I sue the program for not taking my application? Their website says they're open.

Does anyone know if university of south Florida is open for applications?

UTHSCSA interview today. And a second rejection from University of Miami as if one wasn't enough.
