School: lower tier school in US
US citizen
Step 1: 216
Step 2 CK: 251
LORs - One from top 20 allopathic school that is really strong. Rest are from my own preceptors but are strong.
Clinical Grades: Passed all. No honors.
Extra-curriculars: Moderate amount, nothing special

WAMC at matching into a solid University program. Any recommendations of places where I have a good chance?

Perhaps you can give us a list so we can have an idea of where you are looking to pursue?

It's getting close.

Is there any chance somebody who's been through the process could briefly let us know what to expect after we submit our applications on Sunday. For example, when do interview invites usually begin?

I got a couple interviews PRE-MSPE, but most programs will come after that.
majority of interview invites will come october-november.
majority of interviews will be november-january.

protip- respond ASAP to any interview invite. have your smartphone on you at all times. keep a schedule/calendar on you and know when/where you're interviewing- it will save you money and time.

Excellent tip. Interview slots fill up FAST at some places so don't mull over the dates for too long. Just pick something and send out an email or make your selection quickly. Some places send out more invites than there r slots and you might end up in a weird limbo where you have an invite but are waiting for a spot to open up.

Silly question, but does one respond to an invite via email or is there some portal?

Hey guys just another wamc, as we creep closer to D day. Btw I'm a long time member but made a new name for anonymity
School: top 40 mid west
AMG
Step 1- 240s
Step 2- taken but no score yet, CS will be done later this year
Grades- failed and successfully remediated one class during first year. Rest of first and second year grades have been HP and P with a couple of Hs.
Clerkships- Ps in OB and family, HP in everything else, H in my IM sub I
eC-two posters, one research project in Gi which will yield 2 papers, some unpublished bench stuff in undergrad, lots of volunteer fluff
I'm only sticking to univ IM programs, Id like to do GI in the future
So I know the list is super long but I'm worried about the red flag in my app
Northeast-UMass, brown, Beth Israel, mgh, bwh, mt Sinai, tufts, BU, AECOM, Albany, Thomas Jefferson, UPenn, Pittsburgh
Midwest- umich, mayo, Loyola, UC, NW, UIC, uminn, U Cincinnati, osu, Cleveland clinic, case western
South- duke, wake forest, unc, UAB, Baylor, UTSW, Usf Tampa, UF Gainesville, UVA, MCV,MUSC, u Louisville, Vanderbilt, U Tennessee, Emory,

Ideally I'd like to end up in the south, but obviously I want to go to the best program possible
Thanks for all your help guys

protip- respond ASAP to any interview invite. have your smartphone on you at all times. keep a schedule/calendar on you and know when/where you're interviewing- it will save you money and time.

CORRECT.

Stop what you are doing and schedule the interview within an hour of receiving the email on your smartphone. Go to a computer and schedule it (some places have a website with their current open dates or a SurveyMonkey style-thing). There are typically plenty of interview dates to choose from. Don't mull over it. Just choose one and commit.

During your nonsense 4th-year lecture in early interview season, have that smartphone handy. The MGH / Brigham / Hopkins cluster came out in mid-November my year, and when the invite came during nonsense lecture, I politely exited the room, slapped myself a few times to make sure I wasn't dreaming, and then found the nearest computer to schedule the interview ASAP.

The one time I would use your smartphone to reply to an interview is if you are actively on the interview trail. At your early season interviews (November), definitely keep the ringer and sounds off (as you always should), but take those bathroom breaks at every opportunity offered... use it to pull your phone out, check for any new invites in those 2 minutes, then return it to your pocket to make it invisible for the rest of the day...

Your late October - November - December - early January should be as free as possible, devoid of nonsense required rotations... at all costs. Maybe a required class, but one flexible enough that you can jet out for 1-2 days at a time without penalty. Do NOT expect 2-4 weeks off only once to be enough time to accommodate all possible dates. If your schedule during those key 10-12 weeks currently looks like garbage, fix it now.

Correct:

People who had interviews to the coveted top spots who did not have access to their email were promptly shut out of interviews even though they were invited.. but because all of the timeslots were filled up on the scheduling website.

So this is also happening with IM? Wonderful, I thought it was just ortho that was going through those goofy motions of inviting too many people to interview.

Step 1: 210
Step 2 CK: 232
School: Mid Level MD program
Grades in Clerkships: HP is all clerkships
AOA: No
Research: Several papers prior to medschool (2nd author), 2 poster presentations, 1 oral presentation
Letters: Dean, program chair, 2 attendings
Extracurriculars: volunteer at a free clinic, help out with other organizations

I'd like to do some fellowships later in life.

I was thinking somewhere around the southeast, carolinas area, maybe rural new england. I was going to apply to Utah and Colorado. I'd be okay in Texas and the midwest perhaps as well.

So this is also happening with IM? Wonderful, I thought it was just ortho that was going through those goofy motions of inviting too many people to interview.

Every specialty always invites more people than they have slots for. The response rate is not 100%.

Step 1: 239
Step 2: 255
School: Mid tier MD program
Preclinical Grades: All pass, except conditional pass in practice of medicine course due to missing a few mandatory sessions (high 80s grade in class)
Clerkship grades: Honors in Peds and OB-Gyn, HP in surgery, medicine, psych and primary care. Honors in Medicine Sub I
AOA: No
Research: NIH research in undergrad and Post bac year. Poster presentation, and undergraduate honors thesis based on research performed but no publication, oral presentation at regional conference. Letters: Department chair, Cardiologist (worked w/ for 3yrs), OB-Gyn attending, Research mentor (Cardiologist)
Extracuricullars: Founder and president of interest group, VP of student organization, Various outreach events for high school students, Intramural sports, Tutor,

Interested in Cardiology fellowship. Due to personal reasons, would prefer to be in the northeast (mainly NY, DC, MD, VA, NJ). Not really familiar with programs and what my chances are. I would SINCERELY appreciate as much feedback as possible. Thanks in advance and good luck to everyone else!
Current list below and reasoning

Georgetown (heard they rotate through washington hospital center which has a pretty reputable cardiology program)
George Washington (Seems to be less regarded when compared to georgetown? unsure)
Johns Hopkins ( figured i give it shot, do I even stand a chance?)
Hopkins Bayview ( also seems solid, but still a community program)
University of Maryland (Seems like a solid program)
UVA
VCU
UPENN ( give it a shot)
Mass Gen Hospital program
Brigham and womens
Cornell
Columbia
Mt Sinai
Montefiore
NYU

Thanks again!!!!!

Where's the other half of your list? 7 out of 15 of those are reaches. Also if your MSPE mentions anything about missing the mandatory classes as being "unprofessional" then some programs might take that as a big red flag! Even without that this is how i would divide up your list:

Very Unlikely:
Hopkins
Penn
Mass Gen Hospital program
Brigham and womens
Columbia

Unlikely:
Cornell
Mt Sinai

Maybe:
NYU
UVA
UMD

Probably:
Bayview
GW
Gtown
Monte
VCU

School: Mid tier
Preclinical Grades: All pass,

Letters: IM attendings, including former chief, Dept chair
EC: lots of volunteering, mentoring

I'm a Canadian citizen and would need a visa. I have reaches and safeties, although with the Visa issue, I'm not sure if anything would be considered safe. Hoping to stay in midwest or go to east coast. Not set on going into a fellowship in the future, but maybe?

Any insight to my list would be appreciated. Anything that would just absolutely ridic to apply too, and anything I've missed and should add. Thanks =) 🙂

Briefly on stats:
US allopathic grad, Step 1 < 215, mostly passes in courses, no course failures. No special extracurriculars or awards. Letters of rec are solid, not outstanding though.

Currently shooting for applying to 60 programs. Should I add more? Also, how many community programs?

Thanks.

Class Rank: Top quartile
Grades in Clerkship: honors in half, including IM; overall GPA around 3.75

Would like to end up midwest or east coast.

Applying to:
MGH
BWH
Yale
Hopkins
Penn
Duke
UNC
U Chicago
UIC
Northwestern
Vanderbilt
Mayo Rochester
SLU
U Michigan
U Wisconsin

Not sure what is within reach, to be honest. Any insight is appreciated.

Add BIDMC, where your chances will likely be better than at MGH/BWH.
It appears you are a NYC-phobe. 👍
How about adding UVA, Case Western, and Wash U St. Louis.
Provided you aren't a jerk, you'll grab a spot at a Top 25.
Good luck!

Man, some of these programs downloaded immediately... on a Sunday.

aPD stated elsewhere that his PC was coming in today (against his recommendation) to start downloading. It takes a long time to download hundreds of apps from an overloaded server.

Yeah, I read on another forum a big list of them (Stanford, UMass, UConn, etc) some downloaded even before noon.

you'll probably be fine with this list but there are a three strong mid-tiers that are noticeably missing from your list: jefferson, BU and monte ....yet you have GW and Gtown on there

How does Bayview compare with Maryland?

Different kind of program, more focused on general IM but with plenty of good sub-specialty opportunities. I think they're the #2 and 3 programs (the order is irrelevant) in the DC/Bawlmoar area with the various Georges at 4 and 5.

How long does it take for programs to usually start sending out invites. I can see that most of the programs on ERAS have downloaded my step 1 score and then a few hours later the rest of my application.

A few will start trickling in before the MSPE goes out (I think I got a few before it went out), but the vast majority will be after. There's an old thread here that lists when/where people got invites last year for your reference, and I imagine one will be done for this year.

Guys, is there any way to update your application after submitting?

For example, if you publish something new?

Thanks.

We say this every year but nobody ever believes us. It happens. I got my first 5 invites the first week after applying. No MSPE, no transcipt, 3/4 LORs.

noone said it doesn't happen but people shouldn't freak out if they don't hear anything until october 1st. also more programs wait for the MSPE now that it's only 2 weeks between app submission and MSPE rather than ~1.5 months like it was when you applied 8 years ago.

i dont think so.

Step 1: 242
Step 2: 256
School: allopathic mid-low tier
Grades in Clerkships: Honors in Family med. Honors in SubI. HP in everything else so far.
AOA: no
Research: 1 first author abstract/poster. Manuscript typed but not submitted anywhere yet
Letters: letter from Family Med rotation, one from subI, one from chair.
Extracurric: nothing special. No leadership roles

BIGGEST QUESTION: will my letters hurt me the most? Having only one internist letter? I am afraid of asking for a 4th letter right now (currently med elective) because it might not be strong....since I have been HP most everything.

Anyway, what are my chances at mid-tier academic places?

So far applied to:

GWU
Georgetown
Loyola
Rush
UIC
Tulane
Tufts
UMass
SLU
Rutgers
Albert Einstein Montefiore
Penn state hershey
Jefferson
Temple
Drexel
VCU
Med college wisconsin

if the FM letter is strong that's all that matters....no reason to submit a weak letter for the sake of having another one

also you should apply to BU ....it's a much better program than tufts and UMass and you probably have a decent shot

Quick question, how many programs for weak candidate?

Briefly on stats:
US allopathic grad, Step 1 < 215, mostly passes in courses, no course failures. No special extracurriculars or awards. Letters of rec are solid, not outstanding though.

Currently shooting for applying to 70 programs. None of the top-20 programs, but about 80% university programs. Should I add more? Also, how many community programs?

Thanks.

there's no formula but that's likely way too many. i'm sure you can easily cut out 30 programs and be just fine as long as you are applying to less competitive programs

Hi everyone. i have not really asked or spoken to anyone about my chances, was wondering if I could get honest feeback about my chances of getting an interview.

US-IMG (well-known carribbean School)
Step 1: 230
Step 2: 245
Step 2 CS: Pass
Step 3: will take in a few months

Research: 1 in undergrad (no publications)
No special awards or anything
AOA: not applicable to foreign grads
4 very strong letters of recommendations

I applied broadly, around 60 IM programs, about half are university programs from all tiers, and the other half are community/university affiliated programs. What are my chances?

Hey guys, appreciate your input here!

AMG, relatively well-regarded (Top 40-50?) Midwest state school

Step 1: ~245
Step 2 CK: Taking in a few days
Step 2 CS: Not yet

Preclinicals: Mostly HP, occasional H and occasional P
MS3 Clinicals: P in Medicine 🙂eek: ...it was my first rotation), surgery, psych; HP in everything else
MS4: H & HP in 2 medicine electives so far... no sub-I score yet

Letters: 4/4, including 1 from my school's IM PD. I would say they're solid, but don't really have a reliable frame of comparison.

Publications: 3 poster presentations, one during med sch

Objective: University based program with good fellowship placements

My list

U Arizona
U Colorado
Mayo Rochester
Wash U
Dartmouth
U New Mexico
OHSU
U Penn
UT Southwestern
UT Houston
UT San Antonio
U Utah
U Washington
U Wisconsin

What do you think? Is it too reachy?
