Official 2015-2016: Oh no, I don't have a single Interview Invite thread!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just discovered this thread not too long ago, & I have to say yall's perseverance is amazing! Wish I would have found this earlier, because I'm in a similar situation to many of you. I applied to only 5 schools (financial reasons and an extremely low MCAT limited my options). I didn't get my first II until the week before Thanksgiving. Was really starting to lose hope by that point. Well, fast forward to March and the hopelessness came back. Wait listed at my top choice last week and still waiting to hear back from the only other school I interviewed at.
Good luck to you all! You all truly deserve an acceptance.

I got an invitation to interview at Jefferson. I didn't get an email and the portal didn't update about the interview, but I got one.

I'm not lying, just predicting the future.
Welcome aboard. I'm in charge of neuroticism around here. Side note, you got two interviews out of five schools? If 40% of my schools interviewed me I'd be rolling in interviews right now.

Thought I would be hearing back from some schools today. Nope. Just more waiting. ><

QUESTION!

In discussion with some of my rejection schools it was recommended that I go back and take some "addition science units". They recommended that I just do it open, saying I don't need to enter an official masters program or anything. They said science courses i haven't previously taken would be sufficient.

So to the question: should those be undergrad (lower or upper) or post-bacc courses?

I was looking at courses like hematology, immunology, applied neurobiology, major organ biochemistry.... But the school also has odd courses that are technically physics
courses, but seem too easy like stars and galaxies and astrology haha.

Any thoughts would be helpful!

How are you guys getting feedback from rejection schools- all pre-II? Do you just call the admissions office? I'm not sure if I should wait until the end of the cycle. Would that be too late?

I just sent out a bunch of emails, few said they'd give me feedback haha many said no. If it's of interest to anyone I have a list of which schools said yes and no

Does anyone know how one would put a list together for next cycle? Would you re-apply to the schools that rejected you pre-II? Or post II that rejected you? OR waitlisted you? I dont want to throw away money if I dont need to. I know gyn has said their school does not re-interview. So I was just wondering how to go about this? My app has changed quite a bit since last year. Thanks!

I'm curious about this too. I'm not sure if I should apply to the school that rejected me post-interview. When I was at that interview, another interviewee had interviewed there the previous year but maybe he had been on a waitlist? For post-interview rejection it's weird b/c on one hand, they obviously liked me enough to interview me, but on the other hand, they either didn't think I was a good fit or just didn't care for me haha. As of right now, I'm going to eliminate the schools that were dumb choices that I applied to this year and then add some new ones (I didn't apply anywhere not on the east coast this year so I'm going to expand my location range to anywhere in the US. Oh and add some DO as well

Also, for reference to the point about applying to schools you applied to the first time, in my cousins 2nd cycle, she didn't interview anywhere she had interviewed in her first cycle. So maybe schools won't repeat interviews? Idk I'm guessing it depends on the school

Personally, I would apply to schools that your changes are more tailored to, if that makes sense.

Personally I'm doing both email and call so I can start planning out what I need to do now.

Wait is that from Thomas the Tank Engine??🤣

So I'm on the wait list for my top choice and I know someone who's affiliated with my lab who has ties with this medical school. Do you guys think I should get a letter of rec from this person? If I do, how do I go about submitting this letter? Should I just have this person attach it to an email to the admissions office?

Have him call or email the person he knows, not an LOR at this point. A personal touch will be more effective. Otherwise, it looks like a shotgun blast at all schools where you are still under consideration.

Thanks! I'll ask him to do that.

So one of my LOR writers is a physician I shadowed and is also a former member of the admissions committee at the school I'm wait listed at. It would be amazing if she could put in a good word for me. But I don't even know how to go about asking for that or if that would be appropriate to ask her to do. Thoughts on how to go about this??

EDIT: and how much weight do you think that would hold, as far as helping me get off the WL?

It's from Jay Jay the Jet Plane, a low-budget and terrifyingly scary ripoff of Thomas the Tank Engine.

Thank you for bringing Jay Jay the Jet Plane back into my life... going to see what trippy stuff I watched when I was younger.

I'm on HPA at Upstate and my NYMC interview is late April. The other 4/6 rejected pre interview, Buffalo being the last.

Have you told her that you are on the waitlist? Because I feel like if she could do something and had wanted to, that might have been something she would have offered to do at that time.

Yes, I informed her that I was on the waitlist. The response was pretty much "stay positive and I'm wishing the best for you"
So I don't know if I should ask or not.

If she knew someone and was willing to call, she would have offered at that point.

2 more rejections today -more fuel for the fire .

I have so much motivation to knock it out of the park next cycle. If my only interview doesn't turn into an acceptance, I'll be making some serious life changes asap.

Agree with this so much. My failure this cycle has made me want it so much more and I'm actually kind of excited to see how my app comes together for this next cycle

What do you guys have left?

I have Howard left, Penn State [but they stop extending interview invites by this upcoming Thursday], Drexel [where I am on preinterview hold], and two more but they are pretty much done so I don't even count them.

🙁

Honestly if I get one interview and one acceptance to any of these schools, no matter which ones they are, I am going with it. I just want to start learning already.

Also for those of you who are thinking about doing a masters who improve your undergrad GPA, don't. I think someone else has mentioned it on here, a post bac is better. That's what a lot of admissions committee members are telling me when I ask them why I got rejected. They say it's because I need to improve my MCAT [which I get] but also that my undergrad science GPA is low[which is really frustrating me]. I explained I received a masters from an ivy league school with a much higher science GPA which is on my application, but that didn't end up meaning anything. One school even told me that now even though I have a masters, I should now go get a post bac for the next cycle, so what I get from all this is either do an SMP or a post bac. Don't do a masters, as much as I am proud of myself for going to this school and working as hard as I could to show I can handle the work, I feel like I just have so many loans for no reason after hearing all this from adcoms.

There are times when I am so optimistic to like really revamp my application, but there are also times when I am like I gave it my all this time, and now to apply again for a 4th time, am I chasing an impossible dream? It hurts but not sure if you guys could tell, but I won't give up. That's not who I am. I am dedicated to pursuing this and if it takes a 4th application, then so be it.

i do have days too when it's hard for me to be optimistic. i know my app wasn't the best it could be this cycle though. i was in such a rush to apply after junior year (i honestly have no idea why) that i rushed it too much. i definitely learned from it. i can tell how passionate about medicine you are and i know that you're going to be a doctor 🙂

Hey, just want to give you some encouragement and reassure you that your masters degree, while not helpful for med school admissions, WILL benefit you later in your professional life when you're a doctor! I don't know what it's in, but regardless, someone will look upon it favorably someday

I was just offered an interview at NYMC and declined it. For those of you waiting to hear back, there are 11 interview dates left from now until April 21st. Hopefully one of you will get it!

Oh yes I know it will benefit me in the long run. I learned so so much but it just was shocking to hear that it didn't make an impact on the adcoms, and for those of us where money is an issue, I just want to say if you want to improve your grades, it may be beneficial to put that money in an SMP or post bac, rather than a masters!

I've learned there's always a positive in any experience I've had, even when faced with the most difficult ones! Thank you for your kind words!!!!!!!

well temple just rejected me 🙁 this one was the first one in awhile that hurt.. my cousin goes there so i've seen first hand what an awesome school it is!

edit: make that VCU too, had to check the portal for that one though

I think jefferson gave out its last interview today. I've had such high hopes for this place. A chance to interview would've seriously been so incredible.

I think he is right. My friend sent an update letter, and one of the doctors responded saying they have no interviews left. This was yesterday.
