Just got an interview from Tufts today after getting into Penn and declining NYU yesterday.

So confused as to why Tufts waited this long to invite me...my dad went to Tufts and I have a recommendation from a professor who teaches there. I'm from Boston and would have to sell my house that I just bought last year if I go to Penn, it would be a tremendous waste of closing costs. I would appreciate some advice...do you guys think patients really care about their dentist having a prestigious Ivy League degree? I plan to focus on cosmetic dentistry and implants and will be targeting more affluent patients.
I shadowed about 10 dentist, including specialist and spoke to several more. The main advice almost all of them gave me was go to the cheapest school, patients never ask where you went to school unless they are other fellow dentist or MD's... I don't know anything about Tuffs, and got rejected by PENN so this is all I can suggest you...
I know I will most likely pick the cheaper school if they send me an offer.

Thanks for your response, price is not an issue for me. I mostly care about the type of patients I will be getting. I shadowed a dentist who went to Penn and does mostly all implants and her patients actually said "I saw your ad in the Boston Globe, I checked out your website and was impressed that you went to Penn."

I've shadowed 12 dentists for varying amounts of time and none of them have ever been asked what school they went to. Of course, Tufts is a well thought of school in its own right, especially up where you live as I'm sure you know.

Hey everyone! Does anyone have any idea if most schools are still interviewing? And if most classes are full? Specifically Boston, Tufts, Howard, Temple, LECOM, and Touro? This is my first time applying and I haven't received any interview invites yet. My DAT scores are below average for most schools (kind of embarrassed to say) but I did well on my masters program (3.6 gpa). I was hoping my masters degree will sort of balance out my DAT a little but I guess not. I've had many rejections and its basically coming down to those 6 schools. Any advice? I've tried reaching out to those schools a few times but not getting much feedback. I will take the DAT and apply again next cycle if I have to but right now I'm focused on this cycle while my application is still active. Please help!

Tufts Touro and Boston are definitely interviewing. I got an invite from Boston last week and I've seen people from Tufts and Touro getting invites as well.

I only applied to NY dental schools except Columbia, and Touro is still giving out interview invites. According to last year statistics, they accepted 112 students and interviewed about 500. I am assuming the class is half filled and they still have 100-150 left to interview. Hang in there, hopefully you will get an interview soon.

I got a continue review email from them today.

Dear Applicant, Thank you for your application to the four-year program at the Kornberg School of Dentistry. Please be informed that the school continues to process and review applications. At this time, your application remains active until a decision has been made or the class has reached full capacity

Yeah i feel you. I haven't gotten an interview invite yet and I was wondering why. My stats were right at their average if not better (GPA was a 3.7). One of the dentist I shadowed, went to TUFTS, and he spent some time on the TUFTS adco as well. He even wrote my LOC. so I wonder why they haven't given me an interview yet. Ive already had 4 this cycle but I really wanted to go to tufts.

Google "Tufts syndrome" or "yield protection".

I am also from MA and was VERY interested in attending Tufts, but did not get an interview until mid January (after receiving several acceptances, and committing to Penn). I declined the interview because the cost of attending Tufts is comparable to the cost of Penn. I have also lived in several cities including Boston and Philly, and from my anecdotal experience, the prestige of Penn is more widely recognized (even though Tufts is an absolutely amazing program). Penn's facilities are also top of the line with the recent renovations. Feel free to message me if you want to chat about this decision more in depth!

I hope to see you next year! Go Quakers!

Hello people,

Sorry for joining in late, but I just got accepted to 2 schools (very grateful and lucky) and need advice. The two schools are UNLV and Stony Brook. I'm an OOS from AZ and need any advice I can take that will make the decision easier.

How much does each cost?

UNLV is about 270. However, with WICHE, I could deduct 25k the first year and there are always possibilities of scholarships during D2-D4. Stony Brook is about 240k with no possibilities of scholarships. In addition, they told me that a GPR is required upon graduation, which may add cost?

Beyond the scope of tuition is also the cost of living. Vegas is as cheap as it gets while I'm unsure about Long Island, NY.

Sounds like you made a decision. UNLV is closer to home in AZ as well, and doesn't have brutally cold winters like NY does. Congrats on the acceptances!

Why WICHE only for first year?

That is what I am gravitating toward, but at the same time I do not want to make a decision I will regret. I was born in NY and spent years there so the weather is not a burden for me. I just feel that Stony Brook is an amazing school with a small class size and it's hard to decline solely because of price and location

Why WICHE only for first year?
Nevada grants residency after first year so there really aren't many WICHE scholars. However, the OOS tuition for first year is like 95k, which is killer. My plan is to accept WICHE for the first year and then simply take Nevada residency for the next years and accept all stipulations that come with the WICHE grant (practicing in my home state is what I planned to do anyways).

That might be risky since if you change residency they might require you to pay them back...especially AZ... they are very strict about WICHE to begin with...

I asked the financial advisor at UNLV and he said this was fine, but I feel you are right. I need to contact WICHE and ask myself. I'll let you know what they say. Thanks for the advice!

Anytime! I hope it works out for you!

Stonybrook from OOS should be far more than 240k. I'm looking at that amount with IS tuition. You don't get instate tuition until second year of your residency is in AZ.

Long Island is expensive! I went to Hofstra and I refuse to move back to NY. Too much $$
