Official 2018 SHPEP thread

Hi all, does SHPEP accept students on a rolling basis? Does it matter if you apply later rather than sooner?
If I remember correctly it's usually on a rolling badis, however since there was just 1 deadline this year I don't think it'll have much impact!

How do you all know what school is your "match", "reach", and "safe"
A "safe" school is a school that you feel most comfortable applying to, in other words, its a school that you know will have a high chance of accepting you (i.e. your credentials surpass their requirements). A "match" school is an institution to which you are comfortable applying to, and your grades etc "match" the schools requirements exactly. In some cases, a persons grades may be lower than the "match" schools requirements. "Reach" schools are institutions that have requirement standards that surpass your credentials, they tend to be highly competitive schools where the acceptance rate is low. Someone may apply to a reach school just out of curiosity of acceptance. The types of schools that people label as "match", "reach", or "safe" can vary depending on their outlook of things.

Yes! Couldn't agree more with that last description about match, safe, and reach. For me my i feel like my safe one is UF, match is University of Texas, and certainly reach would be Columbia. So excited for next week! Countdown: Eight!

Loo

Yea, when the SHPEP people from UF came to my school, they said they would look at every application! So no worries, I'm sure things will work out 🙂

What school do you go to?

To be honest, since the SHPEP program has the same standards for all schools, whether or not you have the idea that they’re a “reach”, the schools go by the same procedure to accepting students, 2.5 GPA and all that. Trust me, if these schools were a reach, they would be requiring 3.5s and above.

Idk about anyone else here but Ik I consider Columbia my reach based on how many applicants apply each year compared to others vs. how many actually get accepted.

I second this! Do you happen to know how many apps Columbia usually gets?
Here's a post that they made back in 2014. I feel like the number has increased since then, though.

I have heard a couple thousand somewhere but then again I can't really back that figure up. I suppose it also depends on what field you are applying. I found another that says 1,400 (credit to premed0431).
So, I just read an article from the Columbia site that SHPEP shared in FB and they said that they usually get around 1400 applications.

Lol I guess I'm not going to be accepted

Approximately 80 applicants are accepted (meaning that around 5.7% of applicants are accepted at Columbia based on the 1,400 statistic). Keep in mind that even if that 1,400 number is correct I don't know if that takes the different professions into account. That is all I could find, maybe you guys will have better luck. Regardless of the site, they offer similar opportunities and I would be thankful even if I do not get into Columbia. So no matter the outcome, good luck!

If I’m not mistaken, I believe the same amount of applicants are chosen from each school, each year. But good luck!

Oh yeah I’m pretty sure it’s the same 80. I’m talking about the fact that they get alot more applications compared to the other schools.

Anyone know how competitive University of Washington and Nebraska is? I applied to University of Washington, Nebraska and New Orleans. Washington is my dream haha.

And only a week from today until we get the results!!!

I should have rephrased it; I was wondering if the 80 number was split evenly between all the professions at a single site (medical, dental, etc.) or if they had a certain number of positions for each. Of course, I do not think anyone would be privy to that information, so I was just making educated guesses. I suppose there is no need to make predictions but I can sense the anticipation, and it as good an outlet as any.

I go to UW (u-dub)! But didn't apply to my own school haha. I can't speak for the specific stats, but know that 7 of my 8 friends applied and got in last year. I heard it's quite competitive in general, though. Also, idk if they give more priority to in-state students?! I honestly personally feel like they lowkey lowkey do, and it's probably the same for every site as well. Anyways, best of luck! 🙂

Hi guys! This is my first time posting on SDN. I got an account just so I could keep up with this thread haha.

I've noticed that this thread is much, much shorter compared to past SHPEP/SMDEP threads. Does this mean less people are applying or something? Strange.

Do you know your friends' general stats? Sorry just really anxious for next week and curious

Probably will pick up more steam closer to the date?

Hey guys, I need advice. I'm torn between SHPEP and taking another class this summer. Taking this other class will significantly free up my fall especially in that it will allow me to focus better and figure out what my study habits are and what makes me more effective. Any advice?

It would depend on if you are a freshman or sophmore. If you are a sophomore I would go with SHPEP unquestionably since you won't have another opportunity to apply.

Also during SHPEP you will generally be taking classes that you will be taking the upcoming fall semester, thus it should help lessen the difficulty of your workload in the fall.
SHPEP also devotes time to help refine your study habits. Honestly, the more I think about it the more I would go with SHPEP, unless you think you would not do well in an unfamiliar environment.

Overall, I would go with SHPEP, though I think you should personally weigh your own options.

Hi all, does anyone know if the essay system cuts you off at exactly 600 words? I submitted mine, and it displayed the full essay in its whole 687 words. My essay never got cut off (atleast what it looks like on my end). When I called SHPEP, they said that going above the word limit is okay.

I don’t think the system cuts you off. I copy/pasted my essay from a word doc that said I had 636 words, and all of my essay made it in there. I wouldn’t worry about it!

Nope, the system doesn't cut the essay off. I actually sent an email inquiry about this. They said we can go over the "600 words" limit as long as the space in the essay section permits. And I believe the limit was actually 5000 characters this year.

But we're pretty close already! I don't know..
I thought the same thing! I followed this thread last year but i got a job I couldn’t pass up plus I found out about SHPEP too close to the date that I decided not to apply. But yeah last year’s thread was so much longer and I still think that’s weird and hopefully it does mean less people applied so it’s easier for us to get in 🙂

Exactly! Past year's threads have been around 20 pages long or more! We're only at 4 haha.
I found out about SHPEP super close to the due date too, and applied late :nailbiting: I hope that doesn't ruin my chances.

I think so, too. However, I believe the same number or more applicants applied this year(application numbers increase every year). Maybe these applicants may not be aware of SDN, or don't want to post on here (which is understandable).

Hi all, was there 1 essay or 2 essays to complete for SHPEP this year? Im watching some youtube videos about peoples experience in the program from the past years, and they say theres 2 essays.

There was only one essay this year. Though the year before there was two - one personal statement and one talking about diversity.

So does anyone know what time they put the results up? is it exactly at midnight or later in the day?

UM also has a similar program, I applied there as well to be safe.

Also, I need someone's opinion. I just got into Duke's Biomedical summer institute program, which is duke's version shpep. If I get into UW SHPEP, I don't know which one to choose. I know Duke is more prestigious and may help me more in the long run, but I feel like UW will provide a better experience for the summer (hiking, mount rainer, big city, etc.) Someone give me incite.

Wow congrats! I feel that I would go somewhere where I can be happier and get a full, well-rounded experience. Both programs are great, regardless. This is your summer vacation, after all, and as much as you want to enrich it with academics and whatnot, you should try to have some fun too and enjoy where you travel 🙂

I have a question for you...did you apply to Duke priority decision or regular?

Honestly, I would look at the description of Duke's program. I'm not familiar with it, but if they are giving more research and shadowing opportunities I would say go for duke. I chose UW because I'm really passionate about learning how to become a better healthcare provider for underserved communities and they seemed like they where going to be giving a lot of opportunities for shadowing and clinical experience.

Hey guys, did you write more of a compelling heartfelt personal statement? Or an academic/ researchy type of personal statement? Mine was a heartfelt personal statement.
