Official 2019-2020 Endocrinology fellowship match

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
How would you all rank the Virginia programs in terms of overall training: EVMS, UVA, MCV/VCU?
Depends on what you want but overall

UVa>MCV>EVMS

UVa is a 3yr program and research heavy
MCV fairly large program and probably has a nice balance of clinical and research
EVMS smaller and more diabetes per se, but Dr Vinik is there so if you are neuroendocrine, there really isn’t anyone better to train under.

The list already has where I’ve been invited to interview—looking forward to getting started in a couple weeks. Has anyone interviewed yet?

I imagine I’m not alone in thinking information like rokshana’s above would be excellent for all the subspecialties within endocrinology.

Would you or anyone else be willing to comment on either specific programs or faculty to consider for each field?

There aren’t many Endos here on SDN and we only know details about places we have been involved with, but that said

If you are thyroid interested then Boston university is one of the best places you can be...dr braverman just passed, but his influence is, well...still very strong and many of the thought leaders in thyroidology are there. UCLA is also very strong for thyroid as is OSU.

Osteoporosis and calcium ...Columbia and MGH, particularly if you are interested in hypoparathyroidism, Loyola in Illinois

Transgender-Emory, BU though Dr Safer is now at mt Sinai in nyc so they probably will be fairly strong soon.

Research? Especially as a physician scientist...any 3 year program will have strong emphasis on research.

Diabetes...BID since the fellows rotate at joslin...look to see places that have separate diabetes and endocrine clinics...you get better exposure to difficult diabetes pts if the focus only diabetes. But overall most places, especially in the south(diabetes belt) will have good exposure to diabetes.

Some places will be great no matter what you want to do...Mayo, CCF, MGH...

Hope that helps

Is there a huge benefit with programs with 3-4 fellows per class versus 1-2 per class?

And, on top of that, how come invite in weekend ?

Anyone heard from other Boston programs yet? BU, BW, BID?

q1> what are the top programs in the country that are their fellowship are clinical focus (not research) ?
q2> what should you expect calls in endocrine fellowship? frequency ? call from home vs in house? burden ? weekend coverage?

As usual, this is program dependent...when you are inpt consult you will be on call everyday you are on service, home call for the most part , though rarely you may have to come in at night. You will get sugar calls in the middle of the night.

Anybody heard from UPMC?

Not yet. Was hoping to hear something.

That's weird. I applied to UM and haven't heard of an IV or rejection yet. Was it an e-mail through ERAS?

Yea eras. Email was from PD

Anyone else frustrated with lack of invites last 2 weeks ? Dang

Been over a week since my last. I figure from previous threads that lots more follow in latter half of August.

Probably they are busy doing prior authorization ;-)

I noticed at U of Wisconsin, FRIEDA notes 3 fellows per year, but the NRMP match data shows they do alternating 2-3-2 matching and should be accepting 2 this cycle. Does that imply FRIEDA is off (which it very well could be) or UW offers pre-matching to 1 person alternating years?
