Official 2020-2021 GI Fellowship Application Cycle

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Can someone who has started interviewing share the general vibes of the interviews? I remember IM interviews were very conversational, but I've been told that GI can be much more formal. Has anyone found this to be true?
I think it depends on the place. I had 1 interviewer last year asked me to walk him through all of my publications. This year, one interviewer asked about the biggest two publications. Overall, I think the questions are still friendly of course but more involved and more specific but I would not describe them as formal. I had only 4 IVs last year though so the sample size is small.

This season I've had conversational for the most part with some of the higher tier places asking a "curveball" questions just to take you off guard a little bit. Each interviewer has only been able to ask about one publication or research project. There's only so much time so they can't ask about all

anyone got interview from rush with date other than 9/30?

Were you able to get in touch with the coordinator on the phone? When I tried to set mine up it just kept going to their office voicemail.

does anyone know when programs meet to discuss setting there rank order? I know each program will be different but the general deadline

also cant seem to find the timeline of other events (ROL, match day etc). If anyone ahs a link thank you in advance

Program dependent, but sometime after all interviews have taken place. Most programs have not revealed their meeting dates, the one that did was reviewing week of October 19th. (I am interviewing through the end of October. If I decide to rank a program 1st that met earlier, my letter of intent may arrive too late to make a difference).

ROL: November 18
Match Day: December 2nd

It's GI, You can see everything you can think of, from one program where the chair will tell you to "impress me" over the next ten minutes to a 4 hour sales pitch to a an actual pimping session...Good luck

I keep hearing this 8-10 numbers. Does that come from somewhere? What are the chances of someone matching with 8-10 IV?

Not really much behind it other than their guess and prior match cycles, for AMG average ranks for those who matched was ~10

Fellowship interviews are the last time there will be this obvious power discrepancy. Tables turn and the game changes drastically for jobs. Especially if it’s a clinical academic job but really almost any job.

I think I might have found it. NRMP Charting Outcomes in the Match. People who rank > 8 programs have > 85% chance of matching if I read it correctly. I guess that is a pretty good percentage.

Yes that's the one. I posted the links to the charts and documents earlier in this thread. There are different charts for american MD versus DOs versus IMGs

lol at Baylor Dallas. It's supposedly the 6th wave and I have missed every single one LOOOL

Anyone else having difficulty with the "gut feeling" or how to rank programs during this virtual season?

YES!
haven’t been able to get a good sense of any program, since on paper, most programs are similar. Hard to get a sense of what the fellows are like too....

Its kinda like whats better Nike Adidas Under Armour. Depends on what you're looking for and where you want to go. I'd get nike for running and bball, Adidas for soccer Under Armour for compression shorts

On a separate note, have louisville Thomas jeff u arizona tucson sent out invites yet

What does one do when they receive an invite for a program but there are no slots? Do some programs send out invitations to more people then they have interview spots?

This seems like a dick move, though I wouldn't be entirely surprised. If this is on ERAS/thalamus, definitely sign up for waitlist day(s). Might also be worth reaching out to the coordinator to express your commitment to interviewing at their program.

Has anyone gotten confirmation of interview date email from USC?

Were there just two interview dates this year? Or did they give some people different dates?

anyone interviewing at Baylor HOUSTON on 9/24 ? did you receive your itinerary yet?

Have new york and new jersey sent out invitations yet? (aside from coney island and Mount sinai).

NYU, Cornell, Columbia, Mt. Sinai, Northwell/LIJ, Stony Brook, Montefiore have all sent interviews. RWJ and NJMS have as well

If you spend some time reading the previous posts and notice people intermittently posting a long list of programs sorted by applicant type, you can actually see that oh hey there's programs from NY/NJ that have sent invites. Boom question solved. Ctrl-F is also a really helpful keystroke to find your favorite Empire/Garden State program

4 dates initially, had a Google sign up form which I did but no confirmation of date so far?

I will never understand the motivations of toxic individuals who hide behind their keyboards while treating strangers with such disrespect and malice, but it betrays an utter lack of class. Good luck next year, though your patients and colleagues may need it more.

seems like half the GI applicants are socially challenged based on my zoom interviews thus far. Some sit there staring at the screen without saying a word or responding to simple greetings from the coordinator in the “group” setting. I can’t imagine how they would be in person interviews.

That mean your pogram is interviewing high score people!! lol

Are people getting interviews still or this is end of season?

Also could someone tabulate common question which has been asked in interview? like tell me about yourseld and why GI?

Have any of you done the zoom happy hours offered by some programs?
I've done one- it honestly wasn't half bad. Largely depends on the fellow and whether they can keep the conversation going when the interviewees get awkward lol.

Well that escalated quickly. If what I said (actually pointing you in the direction of posts in the thread that answer your very question) is what you consider 'disrespect and malice' 'toxic motivations' and 'lack of class', I have no further comment. Good luck to you, your patients, and colleagues too!

I believe UCR is suspended this year from taking fellows

Thank you very much!!

Is this the consensus of this sub that there are more interviews offered this year compared to other years due to zoom? I think we had a discussion above: if the number of spots and number of applicants are almost the same as last year, the number of interviews offered by program will change the number of IV needed to have a good match.
If the total interviews offer are the same or only slightly more --> number needed to match is probably less (can use 8-10 as baseline) if we assume top candidate will go to more interviews. If the total amount of interviews are A LOT more than usual --> need more than 8-10 to match. Thoughts?
