Is it appropriate to ask fellows how much scut work they do? or does it come across as lazy?

pardon my ignorance but what exactly would be scutwork in GI? Wheeling the scope cart over? Cleaning the scopes after procedures?

Along that note, does anyone know of other important questions to ask the fellows?

I have been asking about scope numbers. Whether they can get certified in ERCP or EUS. Most private practice jobs want certification in ERCP and some programs still offer that without doing an advanced endoscopy year.

Who knows. Looks like 2/5 of their PGY4s are from NYU and 4/5 are from Manhattan programs themselves
Oyy sounds similar to Jefferson to me. This year programs may like their own residents even more because known commodity is better than unknown

I got to say I did love the UMinnesota email at 3 AM. So glad my email ring tone is loud and obnoxious

How are IMGs doing so far? I see the IV list but I'm wondering if the majority of those IVs are going to a few folks rather than distributed more evenly amongst the IMG population.

It has been disappointing so far. I have only one invitation so far. I did not apply to most of the places mentioned in AMG section.

The correct way of saying what you are asking, is how many scopes should fellows have to achieve COMPETENCE? So lets take a look.

Since when it comes for getting a job, the credentialing departments have a set of numbers and some states state credentialing needs per ASGE, ACG, AGA set guidelines.
Most hospital credential officers have a book with all these numbers, for GI I was fortunate to have the ranges but I will tell you my ranges also.

Programs and hospitals want:

Colonoscopy: 750
Upper End..: 700
Flexible Sigmd: 25
ERCP: 255
EUS: 255
EMR: 25
ESD: 25
Capsule: 25
Motility: 25
rFA: 25
TIF: 300
Bravo: 25

Me: I suggest this below.

But what you will get If you train in your training at a VA (6 months at Va)

Colonoscopy: 350
Upper End..: 300
Flexible Sigmd: 25
ERCP: 5
EUS: 5

Your Main Teaching Hospital: (22-24 Months)

Colonoscopy: 1200
Upper End..: 1200
Flexible Sigmd: 50
Capsue: 200
EMR: 50
ESD: 50
ERCP: 10 to 255
EUS: 10 to 255
Motility: 25- 50
ph: 5- 50
Bravo: 5-50
IBD: over 300 Patients contin clinic
Hemorrhoid: 5 to 50
Endoflip: 1 to 20
rFA: 100
TIF: 300
POEM: 1 to 100
Anoscopy: 1-20
Baarx: 5- 25
HetT: 1- 25
_ I am sure I missed couple but they all 25 or under.

The exception is for those who get ACG Second Year Hands on Certificate, Medtronic/ASGE hands workshops, ASGE first year, and ASGE 2nd-year Hands-on experience, CME from Hands-on Programs, CME from Motility, IBD, and Liver.

Can anyone switch a Univ Wisconsin Madison interview? I have 9/25 but would like to switch to 10/23/2020.

Also looking to switch a USF interview date. I have 10/9, but would like 9/26 or 10/23.

I can throw in some cash for switching also.

Thanks!!!!

What is a good # of scopes fellows should have by the end of their fellowship?
i was part of a busy fellowship but our turn around times were terrible and so we didnt end up with 2000 procedures, etc. My total count was around 1200, out of which 700 colon, 400 egd(interventions included), rest were capsule, ERCP, EUS, stent, etc. I am in practice where I am scoping ~1800-2000 cases a year. My efficiency got dramatically better after 6-8 months in practice and I can do 3 colons an hour if i had good turnover now.

What I really liked about my fellowship is the variety of cases, diagnostics, EMR, banding, dilations that I was comfortable right out of fellowship. we also got good exp with conscious sedation which is tremendously helpful if the practice you might join doesnt have CRNAs.

you can do 1200 screening CRC and do polypectomy in 500 and these skills u ll anyway get in community practice. focus on variety of cases and settings than number

Mayo graduates do 200 egd and 200 colon to give you a comparison. they do more research

To whoever posted in the excel spreadsheet about UT Houston clearly being a second wave invite, I know that last year they only interviewed on one day so they may be doing the same this year.

I emailed the PC if there are any other dates or if I need to rearrange my schedule. Didn’t get any response. I was looking forward to that interview 🙁

Hey guys, has anyone had a situation where you got an interview invitation message but don't see the scheduling option under "interviews" on eras? I'm not sure what to do.

Have three interviews on the same day and will need to cancel two. Between USF, Stanford and George Washington, which interview would be the best to keep?

Also, how would you rank these programs?

Stanford
Columbia
Mayo Rochester
MetroHeath Ohio
Univ of Wisconsin-Madison
George Washington
USF

Would definitely keep Stanford unless you have a strong inclination not to be on west coast. They’re fantastic

How do you guys feel about courtesy interviews? I am from community program "affiliated" with university nearby and despite how hard they push the "we are together" narrative, we get subtly discriminated against at every chance. It has been > 10 years since they accept anyone from my program for a spot in GI and yet they keep interviewing us year after year. Such a waste of time. Not to mention, there were probably some people wasting some favors by asking mentors to call thinking they might have a shot while the rank list never had their names to begin with.

How should one interpret not getting rejection email from program x y z when spreadsheet says they sent out them. Is this like we might like you flirt with us more, or do I need to call the ghostbusters

They have to fill the list with someone right? It probably just depends but no program wants to go unfilled.

What do you guys think is the number of interviews needed for IMG to match this year?

Send an e-mail to the program coordinator.

Agree. The only exception would be if you know you want a purely clinical career - their reputation is for having low scope numbers. That being said, I'm sure that if you go out of your way to find opportunities to scope I'm sure you'd be just fine.

Thanks, you were right. I contacted the program coordinator and got it straightened out.

Story of my life. While a lot of candidates have too many interviews and need to cancel, some of us barely have any. Pedigree is everything.

Anyone have a rough estimate percentage of interviews that have been sent out by programs? Or a guess on how close we are to being “done” with the first wave of offers?
