Official 2020 Step 2 CK Experiences With Scores Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Wow, so my testing site caught on fire and they estimated 30-45 days to remodel. What are the chances? This affects most of the step/level 1 people at my school since their testing dates are in June. I'm taking in July though, so still hopeful.

If there was a comment that sums up Prometric in 2020, it would be this comment. Glad you're safe though! Sounds like you should be good to go for the July exam.

Never did a check-in post so here goes:
DO student
Step 1: mid 240s
Step 2 goal: 250+, not gunning for a competitive specialty but limited geographically
Test dates: 6/29 and 7/6 (Comlex)
I'm about 80% through UWorld (70% avg but going up) and plan on doing it 1.5x then will reset with however much time I have left. My only other resources are OME and Tzanki. I'll make my own anki deck towards the end with things that I have trouble memorizing. Did my first NBME today and got a 232 (apparently equates to ~252 according to the reddit equation)

Mind saying which site? Feel free to DM. Heard about this but not the location. Think it’s also close to me.

Studying for my NBME IM shelf coming up in a few weeks. Getting a bit antsy as CK is around the corner at the end of June. What do people think -- end of May onwards to June 26, should I do UW incorrects + new AMBOSS / UW incorrects + Anki reviews that have built up from the year based on UW incorrects / new AMBOSS + Anki? I will have about 1300 UW incorrects, I'm sitting at a 60% correct right now with 20% of it left to go as I go through UW mostly on untimed, tutor mode.

My NBME shelves throughout the past year have been either average or below average. Hoping my IM shelf bodes well for me as I feel good about it. For me, I'm just using Cheesy Dorian, UW, some AMBOSS, and lots of Anki. Instead of using a textbook or review book, I've been utilizing AMBOSS library a lot and have found it pretty helpful. Still wish I had FA of sorts to refer to.

Post like these make me feel like I need to move my test back. 6/19 with about 1800 UW to go.

Are these resources adequate?
U-World + OME for core studying. FA Step 1 to refresh myself on the basic sciences (e.g. drug mechanisms, biostats equations, etc.)? Issue is I am 6+ months removed from core clerkships.

Sounds reasonable. I also recently started using the FA book for Step 2 and I actually love it more than the master the boards or Step up to med books. The FA for step 2 flows just like the step 1 and it feels better using it for me.

Do you use anki?

Thanks for the advice and I'll look into FA for Step 2. I'm using Z anki for Step 2 right now too.

Hey guys. Need some advice!

I tanked step 1. Like totally tanked. Scored 210-215. I had some pretty intense family stuff going on at the time, which I attribute my score to. I did OME throughout m3 and stayed caught up with Dorian reviews, scored average or above average on all of my shelves. I want to improve 30-40 points on step 2, as I'm geographically limited to a popular part of the country.

I took NBME 6 as a baseline a few days ago - got a 241!! I was thrilled.
I'm 90% of the way done with my first pass of UWorld at 71% correct. My test is in just over 4 weeks.
Matured 70% of Dorian and do my reviews daily - i also think this is a huge part of my baseline score so i plan to continue my reviews throughout dedicated.

As far as study plan, do I just reset UWorld and go? I have AMBOSS and really like it, but everyone swears up and down to just use UW during dedicated. AMBOSS has a 30 day Step 2 CK program which goes block by block. I'm considering condensing that into 2 weeks, and then using my last 2 weeks to crush through UWorld (OME recommends doing this as a 'taper' and to get yourself ready for doing 8 blocks on Step day). Obviously, you don't thoroughly review UWorld with this plan

So - do I try and find a way to do both amboss and uworld? Do i Ditch amboss? I really want that >240 step 2 and dont want to mess this up.

Edit to add: I spent most ~5 hours today reviewing 2 blocks of the NBME, which took way longer than I thought it would. Am I spending too long on that? My step 1 dedicated is such a blur/disaster I don't really have any good strategies to build on from that, so I'm kinda clueless.

I don't have a strong opinion on doing Amboss (new questions) versus mastering UW and think that is something that takes self-reflection to understand what will help you more. That said, I just want to say with 4 more weeks you are in a great position and keep up the hard work! You are doing awesome and you are well on your way to a solid score!

Any progress and reviewing will help you even if something else might help you marginally more. Try not to lose sight of that. You got this!

@Gurby where you at bro? Strumming the ol' banjo?

Good to hear from you, I miss the Step 1 thread crew! I'm a little bit worried because I went guns blazing all through M1-2 and worked outrageously hard, but I've really been coasting academically through M3. Mostly riding what's left of my Step 1 knowledge to 70-80th percentile shelf scores. Haven't touched Anki since the Step 1 days :ninja:

I guess my target score is ~255 on CK which is 74th percentile - should be achievable I think if I start putting in work at some point. Been trying to do 20 UW questions/day through quarantine, am 600 questions into it at 72nd percentile on first pass.

I'm planning for a late CK - I feel like it can only hurt me at this point so I may as well push it off until after ERAS goes out. If I crush it, it doesn't change my app at all - people will just say "yeah, we know you can take multiple choice tests", but if I bomb it that would be sad. Especially with the COVID situation, it probably won't even raise eyebrows if I take it in Oct/Nov.

I've been neglecting the banjo sadly, but I just put some new strings on the geetar today! Trying to learn this awesome Tommy Emmanuel song and giving myself arthritis in the process. I'm not used to using my thumb on the fretboard like he does, so it's been really fun/difficult to learn that skill. Trying to work up Fig Leaf Rag on the piano. Been playing a ton of video games - Oxygen Not Included, State of Decay 2, Starcraft 2, Warcraft 3.... Got a rowing machine and am hitting that every day, pushups pullups situps... Living my best life!

How about you man?

My man, are we the same person? Definitely feel like I've been coasting off step 1 knowledge throughout third year - which is fine, because it means I have more free time and time to actually take on clinical responsibilities. But also means I'm planning on taking step 2 as late as I realistically can.

Also got back into starcraft 2! I had forgotten how hard and addicting this game is. Really trying to break back into masters but kinda hard capped in D2 right now.

Same here, I focused way more on the clinical side of things (when that was a thing) and just hoped for the best on the shelves pretty much. Glad to see someone else drawing the same conclusions and on the same plan as me.

I've been watching some SC2 on twitch and GSL on youtube. I've always liked the idea of playing and being good at 1v1 but I'm too much of a wimp right now - it's super stressful! I made it to platinum back in the WoL era, but never got to the point where I felt in control of the game - I always felt like I was just frantically clicking buttons at 200apm until either the opponent died or I did. Lately I've just been playing co-op mode with friends from home and hunting after campaign achievements. Maybe I'll give 1v1 another shot though, I feel the itch a little bit now!

Oh man, GSL has been really good this season! Still haven't made time to watch the whole group but the Dark vs Taeja series was GREAT.

For our grading scheme I definitely think focusing on clinical was the better move - our shelf grades were only 20% of the total grade, but you had to hit a certain percentile to make honors, so they could basically only hurt us but getting a 95th percentile vs an 80th percentile didn't really matter.

Pogchamp - I just watched the first game of Dark vs Taeja before checking SDN, pretty epic!

Hey folks! First time posting on here. Was looking for a Reddit score thread, but as I couldn't find one, figured I would troll around on here with y'all.

Background:
-DO student
-Step 1: 244
-COMLEX Level 1: 709
-Step 2 CK: 08/03
-Comlex Level 2: 08/07

Honestly wasn't looking for much on Step 2/Level 2 till recently, as I switched focus from IM to EM, so I'm hoping for at least +240/+600. We'll see how it goes. Might try to push up my exam date if they actually let us back in the hospitals soon (trying to get a SLOE asap). Definitely had a more regimented studying schedule for Step 1/Level 1, but, for shelves, mostly been using OME/Uworld/Combank/Comquest + Amboss, Sketchy, reviewing B&B. Honored most of my shelves so far, so hopefully that'll mean something come test day.

Good luck to everyone taking exams in the coming weeks!

@Gurby if you don't mind, what specialty are you applying? Will you have any auditions/elective/rotations to go to in between before sitting for CK?

I've been toying with the idea of pushing my CK back until September/October timeline, but for EM -- which is what I am applying to most likely -- half of the programs apparently won't interview a candidate w/o a CK lol. Like some of the other posters on here, I did reasonably well on Step 1 (243), but for some reason have struggled on my shelves usually scoring a few points below average on all of them. Gonna be taking a NBME in a few days so I suppose that will help the decision!

Planning to apply to Vascular Surgery! I had been planning for 1 home subi -> 2 aways -> ERAS -> CK, but it's looking like aways aren't going to happen this year given NSG and Ortho canceling theirs. More likely I'll do a home vascular subi and then a home gen surg subi? That leaves me with some extra time so maybe I'll take Step 2 at that point, on the earlier side... So much is up in the air at this point.

For a specialty like EM that cares a lot about Step 2, you're in a tricky spot... Maaaaybe you could get away with not having it early given the weirdness of this cycle, but maybe that would still be held against you... ~50th percentile on CK is ~245 which seems reasonable, though I don't know what's going on with EM competitiveness lately. Definitely something I would ask more knowledgeable people about. Hope your NBME goes well either way!

As a DO, you need more data points in your favor. EM focuses on step 2 heavily as you know. Take the exam. Delaying step 2 applies for MD students going for fields like neurosurgery that do not give a damn about step 2. The advice on here relating to that isn't relevant to us.

Yeah, I wish they would announce if ERAS gets pushed or not. Then I'd do it in a heartbeat haha

Yeah, the idea literally did not cross my mind until I texted an EM-bound M4 who said he actually wished he had taken CK after his auditions in EM. I had not ever considered the benefits of EM towards taking CK, but the way he said it it was surprisingly pretty helpful. And with not having done my IM clerkships due to Corona, it was something I've been ruminating on the past few days. Somewhere on EMRA, they say 50% of programs require CK for an interview, but on the recent EMRA hangout the PD said they expect to waive that requirement given the fluidity of Prometric center availability. Man, this cycle is such a s**t show already!

I'm only one opinion but I don't think you need IM rotation to do well on CK. I would put my 2 months of IM/CC up against anyone's for quality but it isn't helping me answer UW questions any better than studying. Most of the learning on IM isn't particularly relevant to tests IMO. It's an important rotation because it is broadly applicable and teaches you academic workflow for the wards as well as some social work/dispo/clerical/functional aspects of the job. The medicine itself isn't something you can't learn on your couch lol but we do it because the other skills help you function as a doctor not an encyclopedia. The test only rewards encyclopedias.

Hello everyone, checking in from the other side of things for a quick review on my experience with Step 2 CK & Level 2 CE:

Step 2 CK:
-
felt like UWSA2 & Free 120 had a baby
- only a couple (1-2) complete oddball questions
- almost all content covered in UWorld somewhere
- a few VERY FAMILIAR CONCEPTS tested from NBMEs in SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT WAYS
- only a couple Step 1 hardcore science questions

Level 2 CE:
- several repeat concepts tested, sometimes within the same block
- weird law questions
- several VERY vague questions
- aside from the above (which is to be expected, lol), honestly not bad

Both Exams:
- mask got really humid & made my ears hurt
- check in/out is a lot shorter with the new COVID rules
- exams functioned great

I'm only one opinion but I don't think you need IM rotation to do well on CK.

I second this. I had my IM rotation first at a new hubsite for our school, and it wasn't the greatest. I haven't taken Step 2/Level 2 yet, but despite a poor experience in the hospital, I still honored the shelf.

Hospital vs. test are completely different things.

I had a NSG resident tell me last week I need a 280 on step 2 to apply for NSG as a DO with all the covid stuff lol. He then preceded to say he was joking and then said I actually need a 270. Going FM now because pandemix got me bummin.

Hi

I'm taking Level 2 in 2 days. Would appreciate the answers/advice

1. Did you take any of the COMSAE's? If so which ones?

2. What you suggest I should focus on these last two days?

3. How did you do on COMATs?

4. How did it compare to COMATs?

5. Did you do COMBANK or Comquest? If so how did it compared to that?

I am 7 weeks from test day- I was thinking about taking a baseline NBME (probably 6), but not sure if it is too premature. When do people typically take a baseline? I just restarted UWorld today so it will be a true baseline

Hi

1. Did you take any of the COMSAE's? If so which ones?
No

2. What you suggest I should focus on these last two days?
Do the TurnUpToEthics/Law deck from Reddit; bust it out in your last couple days; will pay off

3. How did you do on COMATs?
105 - 114 range; never studied using Combank/Comquest though, only ever used TZanki/UWorld & some occasional OME

4. How did it compare to COMATs?
The actual medicine felt pretty easy; the ethics/law was the difficult stuff

5. Did you do COMBANK or Comquest? If so how did it compared to that?
Have not used.

I answered above; good luck!

Anyone take the exam(s) recently willing to share how it was taking the exam with a mask? Any advice on comfortable masks to wear for a 9 hour exam?

Make sure the strings aren’t too thick. Mine had very thick strings and they hurt my ears real bad at around the 7 hour mark cause the noise cancelling headphones smash them up against your ears the entire time.

I wore masks for hours every day for work. The key is to focus on slowing your breathing down just a bit. It will become natural after a little while.

I haven't actually cared enough to look and I know this is a lazy question, but does it matter what kind of mask we wear? Does it have to be an N95 or can we just wear a surgical mask?

It does not say anything about n-95 that I could find. I will be wearing your garden variety halyard brand surgical mask tied very loosely.

I feel like it’s dependent on your comfort and what you want to get from it. Are you coming off IM and/or feel ok, and expect you’ll do OK? Or do you think you’ll need a lot of review and have an intense 6 weeks of supplemental material and questions ahead? Do you need a kick in the ass, or do you want the test to make you feel better about your position?

I took my first test about 6 weeks before my planned date following my IM clerkship. I would have waited another week or two probably if I was feeling less comfortable and thought I needed some time to get in the right headspace. That said, I also don’t plan to take all of the exam since I want a buffer/extra one in case my exam gets cancelled and pushed back. So 2 NBMEs, 2 UW, one free 120...

Regardless, I’d say you only really have a week or two leeway before you should take one to give yourself time between exams to do something...

May 26. Pretty pissed as I've already had to reschedule COMLEX. Prometric is a waste.

Update: Was also finally able to get in. Picked a May 29 date, entered my info to sign up and then it had me pick a new date with May 29 no longer available. So June 24 it is. This is fun.

Mine was may 27. Can't even log into the prometric website I have been trying all day.

Update: I scheduled for May 20th now. Meanwhile I will keep looking

How are you guys handling the new changes in the exam sometime in June (ramping up legal/professional/ethical etc. to 10-15%)?
Are you trying to take your test before this change? And if not how are you studying for it, are the first wave of testers going to get screwed?

I took NBME 7 yesterday and took an 11 point score drop. From searching, it seems this is super common. I went from 241 -> 230. Despite searching and finding its very commoon for people to drop about this much, I feel discouraged. Just looking for a morale booster I guess - test is in 22 days. Shooting for a 250.

Not to freak anyone out (although I sorta am already), but the Harwin Prometric site in Houston is closed until further notice (bc the owner is delinquent on rent).
