This residency doesn’t seem popular or interesting to others. What’s up with that?

As an example:
# of OMFS programs = 100
# dental anesthesiology programs = 9

It’s already competitive as is, so it sets you up with a small applicant pool, less known and talked about. Amazing profession.

This, plus dental anesthesiology wasn't officially recognized until 2019. The number of applicants has been doubling every year since, so it's been getting very competitive.

You are a DA?

Where ? Tell us more about it. I am interested in the future job prospect. There doesn’t seem many jobs posted anywhere.

sure! Here’s a basic rundown:

The major career pathways you can take are:

1) mobile anesthesiology - go from practice to practice where dental offices will line up a bunch of GA/deep sedation cases for you in a day
2) operator anesthetist model - you do the induction and have a trained member supporting and monitoring (credentials vary here by state etc, but usually a nurse) while you provide the dental work. Here you usually work at
3) academic - work at a school or teaching hospital

the goal of the field is literally to provide advanced levels of sedation to those receiving dental care. We do this because wait times are long for hospitals so we r able to help improve access to care + this can result in less fees for patients

The career is awesome if it’s something you are interested in - if you find yourself able to read through pharmacology and physiology textbooks and take enjoyment in it. That’s how I knew something like this was perfect for me and I couldn’t be happier I made this choice. DA programs are very rigorous but the environment with staff and colleagues has made it all worth it. It’s a small field, you will get to know many of the specialists across the country which I find awesome.

job prospect varies by state but all of the people I’ve known or talked to have been successful. Nobody is struggling to put food on the table. You can either join an anesthesiology practice or just start your own from scratch if you find the right environment. Jobs are usually by word of mouth, again, because there’s so few of us in the country that they don’t really need to be posted online. It’s more common to find that with medical anesthesiologist practices

A good culture is definitely a priority for me when considering a program! May I ask where you are doing residency?

We certainly have no one interested in this forum this year.

Two informal meetings were conducted via zoom. They seem genuinely nice group of people at both places. Any thoughts. It looked about 60-70 people in attendance. Minus faculty and residents, I think there will be about 55 people applying this year.

If I heard correctly, Stony Brook said they have 63 applicants this year

that sounds right. Not a record but much higher than usual. Stony brook is going to conduct their interview in oct. I’m guessing the programs directors are working to avoid overlapping interview schedule.

I didn't apply to stonybrook/chicago but anyone have a link or short summary of what was discussed?

Has anyone heard from any programs during this application cycle that they will be requiring CBSE for applicants starting next cycle?

I don't think CBSE will be "required" in the near future. Link to StonyBrook informal meeting (it was recorded) is available, but only with a password. To summarize, both StonyBrook and Chicago programs were about how the daily life for the residents is like and sort of procedures they do, which may not even matter when the residents are out in the real world. Who would be doing epi-dural on pregnant people as a dental anesthesiologist? They were both informal and casual during the meeting. Some Q and A sessions, also casual. Nothing serious. It was literally get to know the program session.

StonyBrook will invite applicants for interviews on 10/10, and the actual interview will on 10/28, 29. It will be virtual. There will also be a in depth session on 10/27, for what I do not know. Chicago program didn't specify the date (I was late for the meeting so I might have missed.)

I know at least a few programs will require the CBSE starting next cycle, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they all require it.

That’s news to me. Does anyone else have more questions or something to contribute? This is the least exciting post-grad thread I’ve seen.

I think we’ll see more activity once interviews are granted. Judging from previous cycles, the next three weeks should be when the majority is sent out. We’re all just anxiously waiting and hoping for the best (at least I am) haha
