University at Buffalo: Stay Away

This post echoes many earlier sentiments of the UAB OMFS post with similar concerns and poor training being a recurring issue. This isn't one-off but a chronic issue with numerous posts historically. Due to issues with retaliation and unwarranted harassment, this posting is anonymous. This public service announcement comes not as a complaint but a warning for those interested.

At UB, the resident experience is defined by a lack of personnel, vision, and training. It is nothing new, but comes from a history riddled with coups, residents transferring, and undue transfer of power to a faculty who is terrified of removing teeth. This left the program in disarray so it appears as if it just started yesterday. A dearth of faculty and indecision among them clouds the place like the plague. It’s a unique experience in that you can attend an entire OMFS program with your instruction primarily from other residents and fellows. Meanwhile, the attendings focus on tantrums, berating staff and trainees, and their own social clout.

Forget about Jaw-in-a-day, this is the home of jaw-for-a-day. Where complications are galore, the unique scenarios and traumatized patients are vast. Surgical training is lackluster at best with impatience and frustration leading to most residents not being able to reach their operating potential. Similarly to the UAB situation, residents are faced with academic remediation or probation rather than actual mentorship and guidance.

Nothing speaks louder than a program or institution’s response to anguish. Numerous attempts were made to address concerns within the program. Despite a façade of investigations and perceived interest in resident concerns, UB is more interested in its reputation. Their ability to ignore the issues regardless of the transgressions and effect on patient care is astounding.

Be aware: ask the questions you wish to freely and get the truth during the social and interviews. Talk to the residents: past and present. There is no question that's it's wise to focus on avoiding this program unless you long for a place where you end your days unfulfilled, without learning, and a life in the deathly hell that is Buffalo winter. The wings are alright. And remember, you can graduate this program without cutting a single case.

Internship Opportunities​

This internship is a great opportunity to get exposure to full-scope OMFS including Trauma, Infection, Pediatric craniofacial, Dentoalveolar, TMD, Head and Neck cancer, etc. There is no difference between non-categorical interns and residents. You are part of the team. A lot of OR exposure assisting in cases. Doing local anesthesia cases in the clinic. Call schedule - average q4~5 with post-call at noon sharp. In addition, the non-categorical intern will rotate at a community dental clinic with full autonomy developing extraction skills, patient management, and working with other dentists. Compensation is PGY-1 salary with benefits. Great OMFS matching rates after the internship. Great team to work with.

You will not hear from medical schools. If for some reason, the medical school had an issue or concern with you they would relay that to the PD. Programs have their own way of finalizing their list…but, at the end of the day, the PD will create and submit the rank list.

Not having a bachelor is going to be a problem.

You should look up the medical schools associated with residencies you want to apply to and see what their specific requirements are.

You have to be accepted by the medical school to be eligible to match into residency at a 6 yr program.

Is this bachelor requirement from the medical school department? Just wondering how much of a hurdle I would be facing when it comes to 6-year program directors assessing my application if I never completed a bachelor.

The way I understand it is that typically MD schools like to review your undergraduate degree/GPA. I was told that they like to see the GPA similar to the average incoming class. How factual is this…I think there might be something to it. One thing I’m 100% sure about is that most PDs are very well respected in their respective hospital system so what they think about a particular applicant really does matter.

Typically for the 6-year MD route I see that they require a bachelor degree to be considered eligible while the 4-year usually doesn't explicitly require that.

Have not gone through the process (currently in it), but through many conversations;

• From what I understand, post-match becomes a scramble with everyone frantically emailing programs for the unmatched spots. I have heard of those programs offering same day virtual interviews, so have your suit ready in that case.
• Similarly with internships, you can begin reaching out to program directors and coordinators to begin the process after match day. A lot of them will make posts on SDN as well.
• I definitely think an OMFS internship is better than an GPR/AEGD.

I know of a resident in a 6-year program who never completed his bachelor's. He contacted programs while he was in undergrad to see if it was a problem. So yeah I think the best thing to do would be check with the programs.

I read this in the internship thread

"GME funding originates from the federal government and may have limitations on the number of resident positions (PGY) they can support. If you participate in a GME-funded internship, the hospital (specifically in a categorical residency program) has to start you at the PGY2 salary level when you match for your categorical spot. Non-GME programs do not rely on federal government funding. This allows them to hire you as a PGY1 directly into their residency program, potentially making you a more attractive candidate alongside your other accomplishments."

Should this be taken into consideration when choosing a non-cat? Does going to a GME non-cat make me potentially less competitive and should I favor non-GME non cats?
