So I have been wondering. How many of you alternates have sent emails to your schools updating them on your experience and classes? I have been debating if I should or not...especially since we have only ten days or so left to wait!!

If you have new experience or things to add, I would. Personally mine hasn't changed - my job is at a SA clinic, and I've got to pay the bills! I will be sending in my spring semester grades when they're in, if I haven't heard, since Tufts doesn't rank applicants. I also had a few extra letters of recommendation - since Tufts only has space for 1 veterinary and 2 academic on their application, and I had 2 academic and 3 vet to choose from. I had the other two vets send along theirs, and a good friend who is also a professor and knows me through a barn program that I used to manage wrote me a personal reference. Frankly I'll take all the help I can get!

I sent in my fall transcripts, even though Kansas said you didn't need to, and I contacted them via e-mail to confirm that any classes I haven't finished yet are the correct ones for meeting their requirements. I did not send any update on experiences, but that is because I am at the same job, so there isn't really any update there.


On a different note...only 9 days until the 15th! will you (referring to any/all alternates that have been posting on this thread) be posting on this thread, Waitlist Survivors, or Official Acceptances when you start hearing from schools? I've really enjoyed following this thread, knowing I'm not alone in my agony of waiting, so I'd love to know where to look to see if people start getting calls.
Also, from what I've heard it seems like most schools call for Alternates, opposed to sending e-mail or snail mail. Does anyone know how much time you have to give them a response?

Thanks for the input everyone. I haven't gotten any new experiences this semester, but I have some lined up for the summer.

Cloud: It depends on the school. K-State sends you an email/mail to let you know when the class is full. Purdue doesn't let you know at all. I suggest you call your schools. They will probably tell you.

Animevet- I've also considered sending either Willie Reed or John van Vleet an email (it's publicly listed!) but I don't know if that would be out of line or not. It would just be a quick thank you and to let them know I am still very interested in their school. Denise Ottinger told me it would be "futile" to bother updating them because "their work is done." It could be the push and nudge I need or it could totally irritate them....🙄

I think it depends on if you are an IS or OOS...I contacted the admissions office at OKSU about this and was told that resident applicants would not be notified until June so that applications can be re-ranked according to spring grades. At that time you will be notified if there is a seat available.

Of course, this is procedure for IS and I believe it varies if you are OOS and also on the school you're waitlisted at...

I think it depends on the school! I'd imagine most that rank start notifying immediately after Apr. 15th, but since they might still be getting responses ON the 15th...well yeah.

Or you could be waitlisted at a school that doesn't rank.

it depends on the school...for places like LSU and NCSU, they don't rank b/c they are big on diversity. they like to fill the seats with alternates who closely reflect the person who turned down their offer.

for other schools, they may not issue a rank, but may have the alternates listed in some way. or the adcoms may meet again to discuss the remaining alternates and make a decision.

I've looked on some of the links for alternates the last two years, and it looks like it depends on the school. On those threads, there were definitely people called on April 15th (KSU called on the 15th), but there are other schools that just require the response to be post-marked by the 15th, so it looked like they took a few more days to get in touch. on the opposite end of the spectrum, it sounds like UPenn is already contacting people off the waitlist.

In the letter, WSU said if I don't hear from them by August 3, I can assume I will not be offered a spot. So nothing. Arg!

this waiting is killing me. i kept thinking april 15th was some date in the distant future, and now it's almost here and it is all that i can think about! there's a good change i won't get off either of my waiting lists, but that'll mean 4 months of obsessively checking my phone every 30 seconds.
this is miserable, and my new addiction to SDN does not help because now i just check it all the time for updates!

It is extremely tempting! I'm torn myself if emailing would actually do any good. The waiting is starting to drive me crazy. The good news is that Purdue has started drawing from the waitlist. It won't start moving appreciably until the 15th though, according to Denise.

-I usually just lurk around here though b/c every time I think about this situation i start twitching and can't type whole words

-I just didn't expect to be in this position b/c my SIS score is in the 880's and i have alot of large animal & research experience, etc......but now that I've been investigating a bit more around here everyone else seems just as qualified (and many even more so than myself)

No you're definitely not the only one. I decided to call a psychic (and I don't even believe in this stuff) in hopes of maybe easing my frustration by hearing whether or not I would eventually get accepted...but I think it made everything worse, especially since I keep checking my phone and email every five minutes, even though I know both the schools I wait listed for are not doing anything until after the 15th, as they have each told me at least three times this past week. I think I've officially lost it.

Officially or not, I know for a fact i am beyond obsessed with SDN. I too, feel like i must be in a parallel universe where all talk of acceptances, declines has been banned. I kept thinking I must have a computer virus that was obliterating any discussion or giving any hope.

I think the only way I will survive this week is if I fill my bathtub up with Tequila and put a straw in it and just slurp till thursday.....

If anyone wants to join, just bring a jug or two so we can refill! 😛
